Be it known that I, Tmoonus Boone Brannon, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Monongahela city, in the county of ashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- %his invention relates to smoking pipes, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a pipe with positive and reliable means fior preventing nicotin, tobacco oils and foreign matter from enter' the mouth piece of; a pipe from the bowl t ereof; second, to provide an attachment that can be used in connection with various kinds of pipes for maintaining the same in a sanitary and cleanly condition; third, to provide a pipe with an absorbent filtering material, that will reduce the strength of strong tobacco used in the pipe; and fourth, to provide a filtering attachment for pipes that can be easily and quickly removed and renewed.

The above objects are attained by a simple and inexpensive attachment that aims to prolong the life of a smoker by preventin n1co-.

tin infected smoke from being inha ed or drawn into the mouth, it being a well known fact that the health is injured by the use of strong tobacco, particularly when inhaled and taken into the lungs.

My invention is not confined to pipes but can be embodied in cigar and cigarette holders or can be made as an attachment for the ends of cigars or cigarettes placed in a holder.

The invention will be hereinafter 'more fully described in detail and then specifically claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawin forming a art of this application wherein there is llustrated the pre-' ferred embodiments of my invention, but I would have it understood that the detail construction thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a pipe bowl having a straight stem 2 provided with a sleeve or ferrule 3 and a mouth piece 4. These parts are common to an ordinary smoking pi e, and in rder that one type of filter-can e used in connection with the pipe,l provide the bowl 1 thereof with an interior annular shoulder 5. This shoulder is adapted to sppport a cage within the bowl 1, Said cage being made of metal, porcelain, wood or any suitable materiohpreferabl non-combustible. The cage comprises a cy indrical body 6, having an annular perforated head 7 adapted to rest upon the shoulder 5 of the bowl 1. In the cage is located filtering material 8, as charcoal, either in the granulated or porous form, silk, cotton or inen, absorbent filtering paper, such as used by chemists, or any material having pro 'ertles capable of filtering cotton or linen attachments, and furthermore, sticks of wrapped linen or absorbent filtering pa er. The tubes or sticks are preferably ma e in a form that can be easily carried, inserted in the stem 2 and when the pipe has been several days used, the tubes or sticks can be removed and new ones placed 1 therein, thereby insuring a clean and wholesome use of the pipe.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have illustrated a pipe bowl 12 having an angularly disposed stem 13 and a mouthpiece 14. The bottom of the bowl 12 is provided with a detachable-plug 15, and in this instance, the

A further application of my'invention to smokers articles is shown in Fi 9 of the drawings-where a small cap 18 is providedwith a filtering material 19, said cap being. easily fitted upon the end of a cigar or cigarette, prior toplacing thesame in the holder. In connection with cigar and cigarette holders, and pipe stems in which the filtering 7 tubes could not be easily placed, sticks of charcoal 20 can be used or small rolls of an absorbent and filtering paper.
