Description
.I. [L C. SEARLE.
, Grates for Heating-Stoves.
$40,150,088, Patented April 21, 1874.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN Q. G. SEARLE, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRATES FOR HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming paxt of Letters Patent No. 150,088, dated April 21, I874; application filed March 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Q. (J. SEARLE, of Topeka, Shawnee county, Kansas, have invented certain Improvements in Grates for HeatingStoves, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a grate, to which both vertical and rotary nioveinentsmay be imparted by means of a ring provided with inclines, upon which the grate rests, as described hereafter.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a stove to which my improved grate is applied; Figs. 2 and 3, detached perspective views of the grate and ap pliances for operating the same.
A is the base of the stove; B, the fire-pot, having a serrated lower edge, B; D, the portion of the outer casing surrounding the combustion-chamberE; D, the portion of the easing surrounding the magazine F, and G the top of the stove. The grate L of the stove rests upon a ring, M, which is, in turn, supported by an internal ledge, 1', of the base A. The grate, when in the position shown in Fig. 3, is prevented from turning by a projection, s, of the base, and can then be raised and lowered by cam-like inclines, t, of the ring M,
when the latter is turned by means of its handle a; but when the said grate has been raised to its full extent, and rests in the notched port-ions w of the said inclines, it
.can be turned by and with the ring, for the purpose of raking the fire. Fine ashes, &c., may be dislodged by simply raising and lowering the grate, and clinkers, 850., may be removed when the grate is lowered by introducing a poker between the fire-pot and the grate, as in other stoves of a like character.
I do not, in this application, claim any of the features of the stove illustrated for the purpose of showing a mode of applying my improved grate, as I propose to embody them in a future application for Letters Patent.
I claim The combination of a grate, L, a stop, 8, and a ring, M, having inclines t for raising, and notches w for retaining, the grate, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN Q. G. SEARLE.
