FIRE-BOX LlNlNG.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,935, dated March 22, 1887.
Application filed February 20, 1886. Serial No. 192,696.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Box Linings; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section.
lhis invention is a fire-box lining; and it consists in the construction and novel combi' nation of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the firebox lining, the end pieces, 13 B, of which are provided with notches or parallel grooves O C, to per 1nit a reduction in size of these portions by breaking oft sections of the end pieces.
D D are the longergrate-bars, and C are the shorter grate-bars, a space, E, being left he neath the shorter gratebars for the introduction of the poker.
G designates the dumping portion of the grate, which may be of any ordinary construction.
At the rear of the dumping portion of the grate I provide a1ongitndinallygrooved 8X tension-plate, H, which is perforated at intervals along the grooves, the object of this con- (No model.)
struction being to permit of a reduction in size of the extension, as may be necessary to adapt the grate to fit a selected place. The curved flange I, at the top and front of the grate, is notched underneath for the purpose of reduction in size, and this flange is also provided with a series of lugs for holding the loose end pieces in position. These lugs are provided on the inner face of the curved flange. They also prevent the fuel from packing down close to the flange, and thereby permit a current of cold air to pass between the curved plate and the fuel to prevent warping or burning out. There are two lugs, XX, east on the under side of two of the bars near each end of the grate, which are designed to hold the grate up from the bottom of the stove in a flat bottom or wood stove when it is desired to burn coal in said stoves, thus allowing the loose grate a free dump and draft.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A fire-box lining having the notched end pieces, the longer and shorter gratebars, and space E, the dumping-grate, and the grooved extension with perforations along the lines of the grooves, substantially as specified.
2. A fire-box lining having the longitudinally-grooved and perforated extensionplate, as set forth.
In testimony whereof'l my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT S. EWBY.
