GRATE-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,258, dated July 6, 1886.
Application filed January 14, 1886. Serial No. 188,576. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORIDA M. RODEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayetteville, in the State of Tennessee, have in- 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to covers for grates,
:0 having for its object the provision of an arti ele which shall be simple and durable in construction, eifcctive in operation, and cheap of manufacture; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and
15 arrangement of the several parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 repre- 20 sents an elevation of my improved grate-cover, the lower part thereof removed. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing both parts adjusted on the grate and ash-pit. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the linear 00 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 isa 2 5 perspective view of the cover, showing means whereby it is adj ustably attached to the grate. Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote like parts, A designates the upperpart of my improved grate- 0 cover, consisting of the plate a, provided with sides I) and door 0, hinged at c, and having catch 0 On the inside of the cover are placed catches d, by means of which it is adjusted to the grate, and enables the cover to be closely 5 fitted to fire-places of different sizes.
E designates the lower part of the cover, provided with sides 6 and handle 0.
Some of the advantages of my device may be stated to be, in addition to the one above given, that should the fire become too hot, or 4,0 should it be desired to reduce combustion during the night or day, the lower or both upper and lower sections of the improved cover may be placed upon the fire, thus eX- cluding drafts from the grate. The lower sec- 5 tion can be used to prevent sparks from flying out of the grate in a horizontal position.
My cover, being in two parts, can be used separately or together, thus allowing the room to be protected from either fire or smoke. 0
Should the fire throw off gas, the covermay be placed thereon and the door (1" opened, which will make a draft over the grate and up the chimney. To provide for adjustment, the sections should overlap each other. 5 5
Modifications in detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, as, for i11- stance, I may employ any suitable means for adjusting the cover to the grate. ho
\Vhat I claim is V A grate -cover substantially such as described provided with a door, and having upon its inner face adjustable catches adapted to rest upon the upper rail of the grate below 65 the edge of the door, in combination with a removable lower section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FLORIDA M. RODES.
Witnesses:
