ADJUSTABLE PIPE OPENING IN STOVES, 850.
No. 407,707. Patented July 23, 1889.
I VENTOR WITNES Es; Fwy-0417 47 0AM ATTORNEY,
N4 PETERS. Pholo-Ulhognph r. Washingkm. D. C.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. UTTER, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
ADJUSTABLE PIPE-OPENING IN STOVES, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,707, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed June 29, 1883. Serial No. 278,570. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. UTTER, 0 Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful devices for Adjusting the Stove-Pipes of Stoves with the Stove-Pipe Openings in Fire-Boards, Summer-Pieces, or other Similar Structures, of which the following is a specf fication.
It is customary in constructing houses to prepare a fire-place opening below the mantel, and this fireplace opening is arranged to receive a grate when desired, which grate may be taken out when not in use and the fire-place opening closed by what is called a fire-board. This consists, generally, of aflat structure and is designed to close up the tire place opening when the same is not required for the use of the grate. In this closingpiece or fire-board a suitable hole to receive a stove-pipe is provided, so that a stove may be set up in the room when desired, either for heating or cooking, and the smoke carried up the chimney-flue through this opening. As these openings in the fire-board and the corresponding stove-pipe holes in the various stoves are of varying height, it is usually necessary to prepare and fit for every case, at a considerable expense, and often at loss of time, a stove-pipe elbow to connect the opening in the closing-piece or summer-piece with the stove-pipe hole in the stove.
My invention has for its object improved devices to be attached to stoves, by the use of which a cheap direct-draft stove may readily be turned into a reversible-flue stove, and by which, also, within reason able limits, the pipeopenings in the stove and in the closing devices, summer-pieces, fire-boards, or similar structures can be readily adjusted relative to each other, so that they can be connected by stove-pipes without the necessity of having the elbows made specially to fit a particular position when the stove is to be put up.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a back view of a stove having one form of my device adjusted thereon. Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section having the back A reversed. Fig. 4 is a view of the back A, showing some of the positions in which the stove-pipe collar may be adjusted. Fig. 5 is a view of a back A provided with double openings for the adj ustable collar-piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I provide an auxiliary back A, of suitable shape to fit the back of stoves to which my invention is to be applied; This auxiliary back is so formed that when it is attached to the back of a stove a suitable air-chamber will be formed between the back of the stove and the auxiliary back A, as clearly shown in the drawings. A convenient form of auxiliary back for this purpose is a trough-shaped casting like the back A shown in the drawings, having suitable lips or edges to receive screws by which it may be secured to the stove. Such a casting can be very cheaply made.
On the vertical part of the auxiliary back A a suitable opening is provided to receive a plate B, containing a pipe-collar and opening O. The plate 13 may be made of any suitable form which can be turned upon its center. The circular form admitting of a great scope of adjustment, will be found most convenient. The opening in the back A is of course to be of a configuration corresponding to the shape of the plate 13. The plate B is provided with suit-able devices to hold it in place in any desired position. Convenient means of adjustment are those shown in the drawings, in which the plate Bis provided with a fixed detent Ct anda mo *able detent or button b,which may be turned out of the way until the plate B is adjusted to the required position, when it is turned to hold against the inner side of the auxiliary back A, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and The holding devices for the plate B should be attached to and move with such plate, for by such arrangement the plate B can be adjusted in any desired position and the button I) will never be so placed as to interfere with the collar 0.
As shown in the drawings, the adjustable plate B is provided with a stove-pipe opening and suitable collar C, which is disposed therein eccentrically, so that by rotating the plate 13 in its opening in the auxiliary back A the collar C will beraised or lowered, as the case may be.
The auxiliary back A is further so constructed as to be reversible in its position on the stove-that is, so that either end of it may be used as the top part. This increases the scope of adjustment. Thus in Fig. 2 the back A is shown with the collar-opening near the top of the stove, and in Fig. 3 the same back A is shown reversed, bringin g the collar-opening near the bottom of the stove.
I may also provide two openings of equal size, as shown in Fig. 5, one in the upper and one in the lower part of the auxiliary back A. One of these openings is to receive the plate B, and for the other one a solid closing-plate B is to be provided, the plates B and'B being of equal size and interchangeable, so that either the upper or the lower opening in the auxiliary back A can be utilized for the pipeopening by simply changing the plates B B. The plate B is to be provided with detent a and button 1), corresponding to those parts on the plate B.
It will be seen that by myinvention the flue of the stove may be reversed and the pipeopening readily adjusted to connect with the pipe opening in the summer pieces, fireboards, &c., either with or without the use of an elbow, as the case may be.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, a collar piece or opening in stoves adapted to be adjusted in Varying positions; but.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stove provided with an auxiliaryback A, of configuration adapted to form an airchamber on the back of the stove and provided with suitable smoke-discharging opening,in combination with a plate B, adapted to rotate in such opening and having a pipe-collar O and an opening therein disposed on such plate eccentrically, such plate being further provided with a lug a and button 1), substantially as described and shown.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hollow auxiliary stove-back A, adapted to be attached to the back of a stove and to form an air-chamber thereon, such back provided with a suitable smoke-discharging opening, in combination with the pipe-adjusting device described, consisting of a plate B, adapted to rotate in such opening and havinga pipe-collar O and opening therein disposed on such I plate eccentrically, such plate being further provided with a lug a and button I), substantially as described and shown.
3. The hollow auxiliary stove-back A, adapted to be attached to the back of a stove and to form an air-chamber thereon, such back having two openings of equal size formed therein, in combination with interchangeable plates B B, adapted to rotate in such openings, such plates having suitable holding parts, as the lugs a and buttons Z), and one of such plates B having a pipe-opening and collar C disposed therein eccentrically, substantially as described and shown.
