OPEN FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 19M..
Application led June 8, 1910. Serial No. 565,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP G. HUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Open Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an open fireplace, built partly of brick and which, while retaining` all the beautiful effects and cheerfulness of an ordinary open fireplace, will nevertheless save the heat which usually escapes through an open flue or is absorbed and lost in the brick work which surrounds the fire.
In the annexed drawing which illustrates my invention, Figure l is a front view of my fireplace, showing the brick jambs A, the smoke-flue B, the hearth C, the front of the grate L, members D and E of a partition separating the hot air chamber from the fire chamber and the ornamental screen or heat radiating panel G. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my fireplace through the center, showing the hearth C, the smoke-flue B, the three members D. E. F. of the partition, dividing the hot air chamber K from the fire, the grate L and the heat radiating screen or panel Gr.
The members D. E. F. of the partition are made of cast iron and reinforced at the back with ribs to prevent warping or cracking and to increase the heat radiation. Member D of the partition is provided at the top with a groove a in which the bottom of member E of the partition rests and is free to assume the position shown by dotted lines, and member E of the partition has also a groove a at the top to receive the bottom of member F of the partition so that these two members E and F of the partition, while always forming a perfect closure between the re and the hot air chamber K, may be set closer or more distant from the screen Gr, according to the draft or other requirements of the case. The screen G is made of thin copper or other heat conducting material stamped or embossed and ornamented in any manner. The grate L has no back or sides, but rests at the rear right on the hearth C, close to member D of the partition, which really forms its back, while two legs B support the front of the grate at the proper height.
The operation of my fireplace, is as follows: When a lire is made in the grate L the burning fuel slides or rolls against the bottom of member D of the partition which is intensely heated down to the very bottom and over its whole surface. The fire then glides up over the face of members D and E of the partition against the thin screen G through which the heat is thrown into the room in front of said screen. The air in the hot air chamber K is rapidly heated by contact with the ribbed backs of members D and E of the partition and rushes up through the flues P drawing in fresh cold air through the lower opening O.
Having described my invention as clearly and in as few words as I could, I claim as new and desire to obtain Letters Patent for:
An open fireplace comprising a fire chamber and a hot air chamber with a fireplace back separating said chambers, and a heat radiating screen at the top of the replace opening, said fireplace back being formed of three sections; a lower stationary section, an intermediate section and an upper section, the upper end of the intermediate section being adjustable to and from the said radiating screen, said top section being adjustable with said intermediate section and adapted to close the space between the top of said intermediate section and the rear of the chimney.
In witness that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 23d day of May, 1910.
PHILIP G. HUBERT.
