HAIR WAVER.

Be it known that I, MARGARET B. SYLvA, a citizen of the United States, residing at 711 Qi. 8th St., Springfield, in the county ot vticularly to a device of this character which is especially adapted -for use in hair-dressing whereby the same may be applied to the hair tor imparting a wavy effect thereto. The main objectvoit my invention is the provision of a hair waver which is so constructed that the saine may be quickly and readily applied to the hair and after being i'etained in engagement with the hair a predetermined length of time it will impart a wavy effect to the hair.

Another object of my invention is the provision ot' a hair waving article which after being applied to the hair a predetermined length of time, is removed, leaving the hair a wavy eliect, and during the application of the article, the construction is such that the waves will have their ends alternately disposed and the waves will also be disposed in opposite directions laterally.

A further object of my invention is .the provision o't a hair waver which includes in its construction a body member having a vplurality of parallel slots with arcuatelyshaped cross-meinbers between the slots and the ends oi the slots extending at an angle to the main portion of the slots whereby the hair is drawn through the slots and brought tightly into contact with the arcuate surfaces and retained in a comparatively tight position so that after the article has been removed from the hair, at the termination oit a predetermined length 'of time, a wavy c'llect will be imparted to the hair.

lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement ot parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: e

In carrying out my invention, I pro-vide a longitudinally curved body portion l, the ends of which are slightly recessed to forni the ears 2 upon each side of the body at the ends and the body is further provided with longitudinal slots 3. arranged in equal spaced'l relation, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2.

The ends of the slots 3 are angulary disposed as shown at 4, the angularly disposed ends at one end of the slots being arranged in divergent relation, as shown at 5, lsaid Vdivergent ends being arranged in pairs so that the ends of adjacent pairs will be disposed in convergent relation, as shown at 6.

The material between the slots forms a bearing surface 7 extending transversely of the body 1, and this bearing surface is prei erably arcuate in cross-section, as is illustrated in Figure 6 with each bearing surface tapering from one end to the other as shown in Figure 4t, the bearing surfaces of alternate members between the slots extending .in opposite directions transversely of the body and having at 4their inner ends divergently tapered shoulders 8 against which the strands of hair engage so as to cause the saine to be guided into the slots 6. Thus the cross-piece or bearing surfaces 7 which are i arcuate in cross-section are tapered longitudinally of their lengths and terminate in a substantially pointed portion 9, said pointed portion being disposed between the convergent angular end portions l of the slots 3 while the inner or thicker end portions ot the bearing members 7 are disposed between the divergent end portions 5 of the angular ends Ll of the slots. From this ai'- rangement'it will be apparent that when the hair is drawn through the slots 3 against the arcuate bearing surfaces 7, a portion ot the hair will extend into the angular end portions of the slots sothat after the'device has been removed, the hair will be shaped in the wavy effect illustrated in Figure 7, wherein it will be noted that the wave portion 10 is produced through the engagement ot the hair with the arcuate bearing surface 7 while the upper wave portions 11 are produced through the engagement of the transverse removable retaining bars 12. The bars 12 are engaged with a portion of the hair which is drawn upwardly through the slots 3, as illustrated in Figure G. The ends of the bars rest in the recesses 13 formed at each end of the slots 3 and the bars are preferably triangular in cross-section, as illustrated in Figure 6 whereby to provide the ridge effects 14 upon each side of the upper wave portions 11.

From the above it will be apparent that in using my device, the longitudinally curved body member l is placed upon the hairas illustrated in Figure 1, and portions of the hair drawn upwardly through the slots 3 by the use of the bars 12, the ends of the bars being disposed in the recesses 13 to prevent movement thereof while the hair is being retained in position. It will be apparent from the foregoing that when the bars 12 are engaged with the hair and positioned within the slot so that their ends rest in the recesses 13, the hair is drawn tightly thereover in order to retain the bars in position asis illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6. Attention is called to the fact that at each end Aof the body, I provide the triangularshaped strips 15, which assist in holding the hair in proper position within the innermost slots. It will be understood that prior to placing the hair within the slots and bringing the same into tight engagement with the bar members 7, the hair should be slight-ly dampened and allowed to remain in the waver until the same is comparatively dry, thus causing the hair to assume the wavy effect illust ated in Figure 7.

Thile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying` my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

l. A hair waver, a body portion having parallel slots therein, said slots having angular end portions and arcuate bearing surfaces between said slots and removable bars adapted to be positioned within said slots.

2. A hair waver including a longitudinally curved body portion having transverse slots arranged in parallel relation, the ends of said slots extending at an angle, said angular ends being arranged in divergent and convergent pairs upon opposite sides of the body and arcuatebearing surfaces between the slots upon one side of the body and removable bars adapted to be positioned within said slots.

In combination with a curved body having parallel slots therein, the ends of said slots extending in angular relation to the slots and the body being provided with recesses at the ends of the slots, supporting bars having their ends ren'iovably arranged in said recesses and disposed within said slots.

d. The combination with a longitudinally curved body having parallel slots therein and recesses .in the body at cach end of the slots, of supporting bars having their ends removably arranged in said recesses and disposed within said slots.

A hair waver including a body portion having parallel slots therein, the ends of said slots extending at an angle with respect to the body portion of the slots, arcuate bearing surfaces between said slots, said bearing surfaces being tapered and alternate bearing surfaces tapering in opposite directions and removable bars adapted to be positioned `within said slots as their ends cooperate with the body for retaining said bars against lateral movement.

6. A hair waver including a longitudinally curved body portion having` transverse parallel slots, the ends of the slots extending at an angle to the body portion, said angular ends being arranged in convergent and divergent pairs, arcuate bearing surfaces between said slots, said bearing surfaces being tapered alternately in opposite directions, divergent shoulders at the inner ends of the tapered portions and removable bars adapted to be positioned within said slots with their ends cooperating with the body at the ends of the slots for retaining said bars against lateral movements.

7. A hair wavel including a longitudinally curved body having transverse parallel slots therein with angular end portions, triangular-shaped strips attached to one side of the body adjacent one end and rarranged parallel with the endinost slots,
