This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a device for straightening hair and has reference particularly to the straightening of kinky or curly hair.

An object of this invention is to provide such a device having a new and simplified construction enabling the user to apply the device in hair straightening position with the minimum degree of effort. 7

Another and equally important object of the invention is the provision of such a device having a construction by which the kinky or curly hair may in part or in whole be straightened, or a portion of the hair straightened with the remaining portion formed into a curl.

Yet another and equally important object of the invention is the provision of a simplified and improved means for effectively clamping that part of the hair to be straightened, upon a bed plate where the hair will be firmly held upon such plate during the straightening process.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hair straightening device comprising a bed plate upon which the kinky hair to be straightened is mounted and held in such mounted posi tion while a hair treating solution is applied thereto, the bed plate being relatively flat, thereby greatly facilitating the application of this hair treating solution. 1

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my hair straightening device showing the same in applied position upon the head;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same showing the parts thereof in exploded relation with respect to each other;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reverse side of the device as viewed in Fig. 1 with the hair wound about the curler;

Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

The several objects of my invention are accomplished by the preferred form of construction shown in the accompanying drawing. In this connection the device may be formed of such material as is most suitable for the purpose, bearing in mind that it is desirable that the decomfort to the wearer. As shown in thedrawing,

my improved device comprises a bed plate ll] of elongated flat formation. The edge portion I I of the bed plate II] is curved in its longitudinal direction to conform substantially to the curvature of the head when the device is in applied position upon the head, as shown in Fig. 1. The bed plate I0 at this end portion provides a keeper l2 beneath which an end portion l3 of a clamping bar I4 is adapted to frictionally fit. This clamping bar [4 is pivotally connected, as at [5, to the bed plate Ill. The underside of this clamping bar l4, in a direction away from its inner edge portion I6, is tapered as at Hi. This taper permits the clamping bar M to be positioned firmly in clamping position upon the hair without damage to the hair.

The opposite longitudinal edge portions ll of the bed plate ID are provided with a plurality of equally spaced apart notches I8 preferably V- shaped in plan view. The outer end portions 19 of the hair to be straightened are clampedbetweena clamping plate 20 and the bed plate Ill. This clamping plate 20 is of flat elongated formation, and extending on opposite sides thereof at one edge 2| are keeper lugs 22. The plate20 at its opposite edge portion provides an elongated slot 23 and operating in this slot is an enlarged portion 24 of a curler rod 25 which by means of a slot and pin connection 26 is pivotally connected to the plate 20. Its outer end portion is bifurcated as at 21 to selectively receive one of the keeper lugs 22 whereby to clamp the plate 20 upon the hair and against the bed plate Provided on opposite sides of the plate 20 are locating lugs 28 which cooperate with the enlarged portion 24 of the curler rod 25 to locate the plate 20 in a proper position upon the plate III. This is accomplished by positioning these 10-- cating lugs 28 in adjacent notches [8 while the enlarged portion 24 engages a notch on the opposite side edge of the plate [0 and one that is located midway between the notches engaged by the locating lugs 28. By this construction the plate 20 and its curler rod 25 are held against longitudinal movement upon the bed plate H1 while servin their respective functions.

When the device is in applied position, the clamping plate 20 may be positioned in clamping engagement with the hair at the extreme outer end of the plate It, or the clamping plate 28 may be disposed inwardly of the outer ends of .the hair to leave such outer ends unaffected by the straightening device. Again, where it is desired to curl the outer ends of the hair while straightening the remaining upper portions thereof, the clamping plate 29 is positioned with the curler rod 25 in clamping engagement with the hair upon the bed plate ID, as shown in Fig. 3. In this position of the curler rod 25, the ends of the hair may be arranged in the slit 29 formed in the curler rod 25 and wound there around, so that when the straightening operation is completed the ends only of the length of straightened hair will be substantially curled.

As previously indicated, it is desirable that the hair to be straightened, be treated with a hair treating solution of any well-known make.

From the description herein set forth, it is apparent that my improved hair straightening device employs no heat unit in the hair straightening operation, the hair straightening operation being accomplished by stretching the hair upon the bed plate and firmly holding the hair in this stretched position on such bed plate by the clamping structure hereinbefore described. This device remains in applied position upon the head for such period of time as it is deemed necessary to remove the kinks and curls from the hair. Either before or after or during this hair stretching operation, a hair treating solution may be applied to the hair. a

Any number of these devices may be applied to the head at one time. By actual experience, I have found that my device will effectively remove the kinks from the hair in a relatively short time and without discomfort to 'the wearer.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A hair straightening device comprising a bed plate having opposite longitudinal edge portions provided with a plurality of equally spaced apart notches, a keeper plate at one end of the bed plate, a clamping bar pivotally connected to said end of the bed plate and adapted for latching engagement with the keeper plate, a clamping structure including a plate having locating lugs adapted to selectively engage the notches of the bed plate on one longitudinal side edge thereof and. having portions providing keeper lugs, a curler rod pivotally connected to said clamping plate and having a portion adapted to engage one of the opposite longitudinal edges of the bed plate and having one end portion adapted for selective engagement with one of the keeper lugs.

2. A hair straightening device comprising a bed plate of substantially fiat elongated formation and on one side of which hair is adapted to be placed in stretched condition, clamping means having one end portion pivotally connected to the bed plate at one end thereof and adapted to be positioned transversely of said bed plate over said one side, a second clamping means including a plate member extending transversely of said bed plate and movable over the side thereof opposite said one side, and a curler roller extending transversely of said one side and having one end portion pivotally connected to said plate member, said curler roller having a longitudinal slot formed therein for the reception of adjacent end portions of said hair, and means provided by said plate member for releasably latching the free end of said curler roller to said plate member.
