HAIR Wnvnn.
Application filed September `My invention ,relates .to hair Wavers of the type Which canbe attached to the hair, holding the hair clamped in a. curved or Wavy position for a sufficient length of time, so that When removed, the air Will retain the Wave, giving it the appearance of a natural Marcel Wave. v
One of the objects is to provide a device of this character Where the hair does not have to be lifted and placed in the Waver, but the hair is caused to engage between the teeth of the Waver in much the same Way as betWeenthe teeth of a comb. By the relative movement of the upper and lower parts of the Waver, the hair isbrought into and clamped in a zig-zag position and left until dry, no heat being required. When the Waver is removed the hair Will be beautifully marcelled or flat Waved, Which is so much desired but can only be otherwise secured by trained operators.
l/Vith this and other objects in vieW, my invention consists of certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying draW- ing in Which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts.
Fig. 1 is a plan vieW of one form of Waver ready to be secured in position on the hair before Waving.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same Waver when secured in position on the head;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a plan vieW of a modification;
Fig. 6 is a perspective vieW of the upper clamping member shoWn in Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a plan vieW of a modification,
' and Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
The Waver may be made of any suitable material such as Wire, hard rubber, etc., and comprises a main body member 1 having parallel rows of teeth 2 and an axuiliary member 3 also having one or a plurality of roWs of teeth 4 lying between and cooperating With the teeth 2. The member 3 is adapted to slide longitudinally relatively to the member 1 by means of any suitable construction, such as the rod 6 and eye 7. For holding the parts in adjusted position,

a clamping member 8 pivoted to the member l'overlies'and at its outer end engages With -theouter end of the member 1.
In operation, the Waver is placed on the hair so that the strands of hair enter and lie between the teeth of each roW. The auxiliary member 3 is then moved longitudinally of the main member 1 to cause the hair to vassume a zig-zag position, as shoWn in Fig. 2. The clamping member 8 is then brought into operative position to hold the hair in this position. When removed from the hair after a suitable period of time, thev hair Will be in a wavy condition.
Then made of Wire, the main member 1 is bent at 9 to provide a hinge and the parallel roWs of teeth 2 are bent out of the single piece of Wire Which is united at its ends 10, the eye 7 also being bent into shape 75 from the Wire. The auxiliary member 3 is also made out of Wire Which is bent toV provide parallel roWs of teeth 4, or it may be bent, as shoWn in Fig. 6 to provide a similar single roW of teeth 4. When a single S0 roW of teeth is used, parallel guide members 5 are employed to guide and hold the member 3 in position.
In Figs. 7 and 8, the main member 1 may be formed of any suitable material, but the teeth 11 extend across from one side to the other, rather than being divided as shoWn in Fig. 1. The teeth 12 of the auxiliary member 3 have similar teeth 12 extending across in a similar manner.
From the above description it Will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character described, which possesses all the features enumerated as desirable, and While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of the invention, it Will be understood that I reserve the right to all changes properly fallingvvithin the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
Therefore, What I claim as'neW and de- 1GO sire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hair Waver comprising a main member provided With' transverse spaces into1 Which strands of hair are adapted to enter from the under side thereof, When the said 10 member is placed in position on the head, an auxiliary member overlying the said strands of hair slidably mounted on the main member and provided With teeth to engage the said strands of hair intermediately thereof, the said members adapted to move longitudinally of each other to cause the said strands to assume a curved position, and means for clamping the said members iii position on the head with the hair iii curved position.
2. A hair vvaver comprising an elongated main member having rows of teeth along its outer edges to provide spaces into which strands of hair are adapted to enter -from the underside thereof, when the said ineinber is placed in position on the head, an auxiliary member overlying the said strands of hair slidably mounted on the main inembei' and provided with teeth to engage the said strands of hair intermediate tlie said spaces, the said members adapted to move longitudinally of each other to cause the said strands to assume a curved position, and
means for clamping the said members in.
position on tlie head with the hair in Curved position.
In testimony whereof' I aHiX my signa ture.
LOUIE RADCLIFFE.
