T 0 all whom if may concern.' 1
Be it known that l, `HnNRr RICHARD Viti-iica-ir, a citizen oit the United States. residing at Philadelphia, in the county ot Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania9 have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Blacking` Boxes; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear7 and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation tol certain new and useful improvements in boxes and jars for containing blackingr7 etc., and has for its primary object the provision of a boX which will be provided with a resilient strip connected with the cover to form a handle to assist in removing the same but connected in such a manner as not to interfere with compact packing of the boxes.
The invention has for another object the provision of a box of the character stated in which a spring or resilient st-ip ma conform to the outer wall. ot the box closure or cover and rest in a groove or buckle receiving member when the cover is in closed position upon the box. i
The invention has tor another object the provision of a box of the character stated which will be of extremely simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily opened or closed, as desired.
lWit-h the 'foregoing` and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the combination andA arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specitieally set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawinbs forming a part of 'the present application and in which:
Figure l is a plan viewofthe improved box with my attachment applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the plane of line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a detail view, showing` the manner of securing the resilient member to the cover.
Fignre t is a sectional view showing the manner in which the resilient member rest-s in a groove when the cover is inclosed po sition upon the bOX.
Referring more in detail to the4 drawings in which similar reference characters desigjelly, salve,
parts may be resorted ot Lesilient metal or the like and designated numeral 3. @ne end of this member 3 is secured to the cover 2, as shown at 4; while the vopposite end 5` is lett Yfree and adapted to be slidably received within a buckle 6 or the like secured upon the side oi the Closure ,2 and rest in the groove 'T said buckle or receiving member 6*, as .vn in the drawings. When it is del to emploiT the member 3 for removing the cover 2, however, the end 5 may be pulled outwardly to the dotted line position oit Figurel to space the central portion thereotl 'from the closure 2 and then grasped as handle with the operators lingers extending; through said space and the handle or strip then moved in a direction transversely ot and away from the box sectionl. The engagement between the buckle 6 `and strip prevents turning oit strip 3 on rivet 4 asa pivot. End 5 terminates in a hook which abuts and limits outward sliding movement of said tree end of the strip. as suggested in Figure l.
From the foregoing' paragraphs taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that l have provided a simple torni ot boi? in which the cover may be readily extracted from the bei: l or se cured thereon and when the eover'2 is in positiemrthe resilient men'iber 3 will not interfere with ready handling of the box. lWhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shewn and described, it
will be understoodthatminor changes in the details of construction and arrrangement,oiE n l to withinthe scope oi what is claimed without departing' from the spirit of the invention.
n lWhat is claimed is:-
l. A. closure having' a strip operable to open the sam-e.v said strip conforming substantially to the shape oi the side wall ot `the closure and adapted to normally fit los thereanfainst, means to connect the strip and closure whereby they `will move unitarily in a directiontransversely of the closure, and said strip at a portion thereof being capable of projection outwardly from said wall to alord greater operating leverage for the strip. y e
2. A. closure having a strip operable to open the closure7 said strip heing,` contractile and arcuate to an extent greater than a semioirele, said strip conforming substantially to the shape of the side wall of the closure and adapted to normally fit thereagainst, means to secure said strip adjacent onev end to the closure, the other end of the strip having an outwardly extending hook, said strip at a portion thereof being capable of projection outwardly from said wall to af- HENRY RIGHARD WRIGHT.
