Description

Nov. 11
F. J. ROOT PAPER B0X Filed June ll 1923 Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
UNIT-ED sTrEs FREDERICK J'. IROOT, OF CLEVELAND. OHIO.
PAPER BOX.
Application led June 11, 1923. Serial No. 644,671.
To al] w11 0mt may concern.'
Be it known that LFREDERICK J. Hoor. a citizen of the [.'nited States. residing at Cleveland. in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio. have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes, and has for its object to provide an improved box or container particularly adapted and intended for transporting vice cream.
The object of the invention is to p rovide an improved lock for the cover or end of the box. A further object is to provide an improved handle by means -of which the box -can be carried: and another object is to provide improved means for opening the box in such manner that the contents thereof can be sliced, the whole wall of the .box being paper or cardboard. of sufficient strength to hold its shape under ordinary conditions.
Each end of this cylinder is fitted with a removable cover or closure consisting of a head 7 and a rim 8 seamed or otherwise joined thereto. the particular manner of constructing the cap being unimportant to the present invention. The rim of this cap or cover tits `on the. outside of the end of the cylinder.
Lach end of the cylinder 6 is slitted, as indicated at 9. for a short distance. and an endless cord 10 is caught in these slots. one part of the cord extending inside the cylinder and the other part outside. the latter part being slack to afford a handle.
The rim of each cover is provided with an angular or bayonet slit 11 entering from l the edge of the rim. with a notch 12 at said edge` into which the string may be easily entered. l
the string 1() is ent-ered into the notch y1 12 and the slit 11. and the cover is' then turned slightly, the string passing into the offset When the cover is placed on the cylinder,v
part of the slit and therebv forming a lock which prevents the cover slipping off. The .same arrangement may be provided at each end of the cylinder. Y
Then the package is to be opened. the coversy are manipulated to release the string from the slits 11. and the covers can then be pulled oli'. Then. b v giving a sharp pull on the string 10` the paper body of cylinder 6 will be ripped or slitted its whole length, and the string pulled out permitting the cylinder to be opened out- Hat with a brick or block of cream restingr thereon in convenient position to be cut up into slices.
It will be noticed that there is an entire absence of metal parts, the Whole device being constructed of a paper tube, pressed paper caps, and a string. The parts are cheap, andcan be readily assembled, and the container will be practically Water-tight, it being noticed that: the slits 9 are covered by the rims S when the covers or caps are in place.
The invention is not limited-to the particular form shown. but modifications are possible within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. A paper box comprising a cylindrical body and caps on 'the ends thereof, :the ends of the body and the rimsxof the caps being'` slitted, and an endless string" extending lengthwise within the body and thru sai slits and forming a handle and adapted to be pulled to ripthe wall of the box lengthwlse.
2. A paper box comprising a cylindrical body, caps" on the opposite ends thereof, the caps having inwardly projecting flanges fitting outside the ends ofthe body. said ends having open slits and said flanges having angular slits, and an endless cord extending lengthwise within said body and thru all of said slits, whereby the cord locks the caps on the body and may be pulled to rip the wall of the body lengthwise.
In testimony whereof` I atlixmy signature 100 in presence of two witnesses.4
