4 COMBINED LAMP AND asn TRAY.
Application `tiled January 27, 1923. Serial No. 615,234.
T 0 ail whom e'zf may concern.
Be it known that I. KENNETH F. LEES, a. citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven. in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Lamps and Ash Trays; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear. and exact description of the sa'me, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, 111-- Fig. 1 a rear view of a combined lamp and ash tray constructed in accordance with my invention.
' Fig. 2 a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 a broken, sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 a broken, sectional view on the line -14 of Fig. 3.
This invention relates toA an improved lamp and ash tray, the object being to provide a lamp and ash tray which may be clamped to the arm of a chair, post of a bed, or other support, or used as an ordinary table lamp, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly7 recited in the claims.
In carrymg out my invention, I employ a yoke 10, one end forming a bottom 11 and the other a stationary clip-arm 12. Pivotally connected with theyoke is a combined ash tray and match holder 13, constructed in accordance with the invention set forth in my application, tiled May 15', 1922, Serial No. 560,916. Connected w1th the bottom is a tubular post 14 formed on opposite sides with vertical slots 15 and 16, the upper ends of which extend through segmental slots 17 and 18 formed in the clip-arm 12. By passing through the slots, the divided upper end of the post is reinforced and held against inward or outward movement. `Within the post is a spring 19, the upper end of which bears upon a lower clip-member 20, which is secured to the upper end of a tubular slide 21 surrounding the post, and
formed on opposite sides with linger-pieces 22 and also formed with segmental slots 31y socket24 may be attached to receive the usual bulb 25, on which is supporteda lampshade 26 of usual construction. Preferably, the lamp-support 23 and post 14 will be connected by a coupling-collar 27, in y"one side of which is located a bushing 28, through which the usual electric-li ht-wire cord 29 passes, and this bushing a so engages with the upper end of the post and, therefore, forms a lock between the post and lampstandard, to prevent one turning with respect to the other; The device may stand upon a table, in which case the ash tray forms a supporting base, or the clip- members 12 and 20 may engage with a chair arm 30, table, or other suitable support, so as to afford a convenient light for reading or working, and, at the same time, form a support for a combined ash tray and match holder which can be turned on the yoke so as to stand in a horizontal position, irres ective of the 4position of the lamp. t is equally obvious that the lamp might be clamped to a vert-ical upright, in which case the ash tray will be turned at a right angle, so as to maintain its horizontal position.
I thus provide, in a very convenient and attractive way, a combined lamp and ash tray adapted to be used as a table lamp, or clamped to a suitable support.
I claim:
1. A combinedv lamp and ash tray comprising a yoke, an -ash tray pivotally coniV1 nected with said yoke, and a lamp-standard mounted in said yoke.
2. A combined lamp and ash tray comprising a yoke, an ash tray pivotally connected with said yoke, a lamp-standard mounted in said yoke, and means for clampforce one member toward the other.
4,. A combined lamp and ash tray coma lamp-standard prising a yoke with which the tray is pivy otally connected. a post between the ends of said yoke, a tubular slide on said post, a spring within said post, and tending to move the said slide upward, and a lamp-standard connected with the upper end of said post.
5. A combined lamp and ash tray comprising a yoke. one end of which forms a base and the other a clip-arm, an ash tray imy pvotally connected with said yoke, and adapted to stand in the plane of said base,
' a tubular post arranged between the ends of the yoke, said post formed with slots on opposite sides, said ,clip-arm formed with segmental slots through which the upper ends of the post extend, a spring within said post, a clip-arm formed with segmental slots through which the post extends, a sprin between the base and slide, a lamp-stan ard connected with the upper end of said post,
a bushing interlocking said standard with said post, and providing passage for electric wires into the standard. In testimony whereof, I have signed this 15 specication in the presence of two sub scribing Witnesses.
KENNETH F. LEES.
