LAiVi P-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,832, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed November 29,1901. Serial No. 83,981. (No model.)
T at whont it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM J. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
1 5 This invention relates generally to improvements in lamp-supports and an adjustable lamp-supporting means connected therewith; and the present invention has for its main purpose to provide a simple, effective,
and cheap construction of lamp-support, either in the form of a stand or a bracket, for adjustably supporting a lamp from an arm connected with a stem in such a manner that the lamp can be arranged in various posi- 2 5 tions, being capable of a vertical adjustment,
as well as of a horizontal and rotary adjustment, whereby the light can be brought in any desired position.
The invention consists, therefore, in the 0 novel construction of lamp-support hereinafter set forth, and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various novel arrangements and combinations of parts, all of which will be fully described in the following specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to the said specification and form an essential part thereof.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a side and top view, respectively, of a lamp-support in the form of a stand, the same embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of a vertical stem or post and a lamp-supporting arm, which arm is adjustably (vertically and horizontally, as well as rotatably) connected with said stem or post by means of a clamping device. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the various parts represented in said Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a central horizontal section of the same parts. Fig.
6 is a perspective View of a holding-block employed with the said holding-clamp, and Fig.
7 is a similar View of a holding-block of a modified form of construction. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a lamp-bracket embodying the various principles of my present invention, and Fig. 9 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 10 is a horizontal section taken on line 10 10 in said Fig. 8; and Fig. 11 is a detail view of the bracket represented in said Fig.
8 with the bracket-base shown in vertical section, on which the stem which carries the lamp-supporting arm is adjustably arranged, the said stem being locked in its vertical position to enable the use of the lamp-bracket as a lamp-stand.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the reference character 1 indicates a suitable base or stand, which may be providedwith ascrewhole and a screw 2 for securing the said base in a fixed position upon a bench, table, or any other suitable fixture. In any desired position on said base or stand is a receivingsocket, as 3, to which is secured in any suitable manner the lower end of a vertical stem or post 4. Secured on said stem or post 4 by means of a suitably-constructed holding or clamping device, so as to be vertically adjustable on said stem or post, is a supportiug-arm 5, which is provided at its one end with any suitably-constructed suspension device, as 6, or other holding means, from which can be suspended an ordinary incandescent electric lamp or other suitable lamp or device. The said supporting-arm 5 is movable toward 0 or from the vertical stem or post 4 in a horizontal plane and is also capable of a rotary motion in the said holding or clamping device on the said stem or post 4 in the manner to be presently described. The said holding or 5 clamping device comprises a yoke-shaped frame 7, which consists, essentially, of a V or other suitably shaped end member 8 and a pair of forwardly-extending side pieces 9,
each side piece being made with an elongated 10o opening or slot 10 for placing the said frame 7 over-the supporting-arm 5. Between the comprising a pair of side pieces on said frame provided with openings through which said supporting-arm extends, and a V-shaped holding member forming a part of said frame, a holding-block arranged between said side pieces, provided with a groove 14 which is arranged against one side of said stem, and the said block being also provided with another groove 12 which is arranged against one side of said supporting-arm,a plate arranged between the said side pieces having portions thereof slidably arranged in the openings in said side pieces, and a screw arranged in ascrewthreaded hole in said plate, said screw having its end in engagement with a portion of said supporting-arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a lamp-support, the combination, with a base, of a stem pivotally connected with said base, a lamp-supporting arm, and means for adjustably connecting the said arm with said stem, consisting, of a frame arranged about said stem, comprising a pair of side pieces on said frame provided with openings through which said supporting-arm extends, and a V-shaped holding member forming a part of said frame, a holding-block arranged between said side pieces, provided with a groove 14 which is arranged against one side of said stem, and the said block being also provided with another groove 12 which is arranged against one side of said supportingarm, a plate arranged between said side pieces and having portions thereof slidably arranged in the openings in said side pieces, and a screw arranged in a screw-threaded hole of said plate, said screw having its end in engagement with a portion of said supporting arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In alamp-support, the combination, with a base, of a stem pivotally connected with said base, means connected with said base and stem for retaining said stem in a fixed position, a lamp-supporting arm, and means for adjustably connecting the said arm with said stem, consisting, of a frame arranged about said stem, comprising a pair of side pieces on said frame provided with openings through which said supporting-arm extends, and a V-shaped holding member forming a part of said frame, a holding-block arranged between said side pieces, provided with a groove 14 which is arranged against one side of said stem, and the said block being also provided with another groove 12 which is arranged against one side of said supportingarm, a plate arranged between the said side pieces having portions thereof slidably arranged in the openings in said side pieces, and a screw having its end in engagement with a portion of said supporting-arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The herein-described clamping or holding device, consisting essentially, of a yokeshaped frame having side pieces provided with openings, a holding-block between said side pieces, said block having ribs 13 and a groove 14 between said ribs, both the said ribs 13 and groove 14 being arranged in one side of said block, and said block being also provided with a groove 12 in another side of said block, said groove 12 extending in a direction at right angles, or approximately so, to the direction of said groove 14, a plate slidably arranged between the said side pieces, and a tightening-screw connected with said plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1901.
WVILLIAM J. BAILEY.
