ELECTRIC LANTERN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, HAROLD C. BRECKEN- RIDGE, a citizen or" the United States, residing at Clancy, in the county of Jefferson and State of Montana, have invented new and useful improvements in Electric Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to electric lanterns and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of the invention is to provide a lantern of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which in cludes a battery receptacle with a frame located below the same and a bulb positioned below the receptacle and disposed within the frame whereby it is protected by the same. An additional advantage of this arrangement is that the rays of light from the bulb may descend in a downward direction when the lantern is supported at a relatively high point and the bulb may be visible when the frame of the lantern is resting upon a fiat surface.

Another object of the invention is to so construct and arrange parts of the lantern that the battery may rest directly upon the upper portion of the frame, consequently the weight of the battery is borne by the frame and the receptacle which incloses the battery is not, liable tribe distorted out of its proper shape or position.

The lantern comprises a frame 1 which may serve as a base for the structure and which is composed of strands of stout wire suitablyconnected together. The said frame in general side elevation is in the form or a truncated cone and the wires are spaced from each other. A receptacle 2 of tin, iron or other suitable metal is mounted upon the upper portion of the frame 1 and the top parts of the frame pass transversel through the lower portion of the receptacle 2 as best illustrated in Fig. 1 oi the drawing". end of the receptacle 2 and is located between the side members of the frame 1. A. bulbd is screw-threaded in the socket member3 in a usual manner. W hen the bulb 4 is in position in the socket member 3 it is electrically connected with the receptacle 1 which in the present instance serves as the ground of an electric circuit. A cover 5 is provided for the receptacle 1. A. terminal 6 is mounted on the cover 5 and a wire 7 passes through the cover and is connected with the terminal 6 and passes along the inner side of the receptacle 2 and through the bottom thereof and connects with the bulb t through the socket member 3 in a usual manner. A battery 8 is housed within the receptacle 2 and rests at its lower end uponthe upper end of the frame 1. lhe terminal 9 ot' the battery 8 is electrically connected with the receptacle 2 by means of a wire 10. The terminal 11 of the battery 8 is electrically connected with a terminal 12 upon the cover 5 by means of a wire 13. A switch 1.4: is pivotally mounted upon the terminal 12 and may be swung into engagement with the tern'iinal 6 hereinbefore described whereby electric circuit is closed. Nhen the circuit is closed the bulb is illuminated in a usual manner and when the switch 14 is moved out of contact with the terminal 6 the circult is broken and consequently the light at the bulb 4: is extinguished.

From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that an electric lamp lantern of simple and durable structure is pro vided and that the bulb is so supported that the rays of light are not interfered with when the lantern is hanging upon a relatively high support. Also when the lantern is resting upon the base frame, the bulb is visible.
