FLASH LIGHT.

This invention relates to portable electric lamps, and more especially to that type of lamp known as a flashlight and comprising a tubular casing provided at one end with a a bulb and lens and having a switch mechanism mounted on said casing in convenient position for operation by the thumb of the hand holding the flashlight.
An object of this invention is a means of supporting such a flashlight in an inclined position upon a horizontal surface and for suspending it from a hook or the like in substantially vertical position with the lens end of the flashlight directed upwardly.
According to this invention, a metal supporting member or bail is hinged to the contact box in which is arranged the switch mechanism, preferably at the end thereof adjacent the lens, and conforms generally when 1n inoperative position, it fits snugly around the contact box out of the way. Means are provided for maintaining the supporting member in angular relation to the casing, and the supporting member is so formed as to provide two spaced feet or the like. hen the supporting member is angularly arranged in inclined position with respect to the casing and the flashlight is placed upon a horizontal surface, it is supported in an inclined position and may be directed toward any object which it is desired to illuminate. The flashlight may also be suspended from ahook or the like by swinging the supporting member beyond the position assumed by it when acting as a pedestal. In such position, the flashlight will assume an approximately vertical position with its lens end directed upwardly.
Other objects, novel features and "advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of a lamp embodying the invention with the supporting member ininoperative position;

A supporting member or bail 15 is pivotally connected to that end of the contact box 14. adjacent the cap 12 by having its ends projecting through apertures formed in the wall of the contact box. The contour of the bail 15 conforms generally to the periphery of the contact box 14, so that, in the position shown in Figure 1, it fits snu ly around the contact box and is held in such position b frictional contact between it and the perip any of the contact box. The contact box 14 is indented as at 16 adjacent the pivotal points of the bail 15, and, when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 2, thearms of the bail snap into the indentations 16, thereby holding the bail in angular relation to the casing 10. The bail is formed to provide two loops or feet 17 When the flashlight is supported in the position shown inFig. 2, the feet 17 and the base cap 11 form points of support for the casing.
The flashlight may be supported in an approximately vertical position by swinging the bail 15 so that its closed end projects toward the cap 12 and arranging the closed end over a hook or the like. In this position, the weightof the battery is carried by the spring provided at the base of the lamp andthe lens end of the lamp is limited in its movement, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of its striking any object and injuring the lens or the bulb.
It is understood, of-course, that various modifications may be made in the structural details of the device above described without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a'flashlight, a casing. a contact box on said casing, a bail pivotally connected to said cont-act box and being arranged to extend around saidcontact box when not in use, and means for maintaining said bail in angular relation to said casing. I
