JAMES BAlILEY, OF COLUlfIBA, SOUTH CAROLINA.
WRENCH.
Application tiled-March 9, `1929. Serial No. 542,399.
To all whom itmag/ concern.' l j Be it known that l, .latins F. BMLEY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Columbia, in the county/Voit Richland and Stateoi South Carolina', have invented certain new and useful ilinprovements `in lllrenches; and l do herebydeclare the iollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description 'ol the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j
rlhis invention has relation to a combination wrench of the type embodying ahandle, complemental jaws pivoted to the handle and means for adjusting the jaws and holding them in the required adjusted position. y l
The invention relates chiefly to the general structure and more particularly to the formation oit' the jaws and the adjusting mechanism cooperating therewith.
Other objects and advantages will be apwithout depart-ing from the nature ot' the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure l is a perspective view ot wrench embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view, the handle section on the near side being removed,
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 3*3 of Figure l, looking in the direction oi the arrows, l
Figure l is a central longitudinal section taken on the line lf-4 of Figure l, and
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective ot the jaw operating member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The wrench comprises a handle which embodies similar or like sections, each section consisting of a cheek portion l and a semi-cylindrical portion 2. lli/hen the handle sections are assembled, the'cheek por-I tions 2 come together and may be secured in any preferred way, as by iastenings 3, which may consist oit' rivets or bolts, or said sections may be electrically welded or `secured in any manner. Flach of the handle sections provided at its rear end withan inner rib d, whereby to provide a swivel connection between the handle and the adjusting nut 5 by oit which the jaws are moved.
The jaws G are of similar or like 'torination and are mounted upon a pivot 7 which is supported in the cheek portions l of the handle. Each of the j aws-G hasa rear eX- tension S which is curved in its length, said extensions beinglaterally.spaced and curvi s in opposite directions to insure like movement ot the jaws when adjsuting the same. Y
'.lhe operating member for the jaws coniprises a head 9 and a threaded stern l0, the latter cooperating with the adjusting nut 5.
portions l of the handle and is provided at opposite ends with opposed lateral flanges ll which engage the longitudinal edgeskof the cheek portions l to retain the head in position and direct the same in its movement. Similar recesses l2 are formed in opposite sides of the head 9 to receive the curved extensions 8 of the jaws 6. Upposite walls of the recesses l2 are curved* to correspond with the curved edges of the extensions 8. The recesses 12 extend in op posite directions to correspond with the eX- tensions 8. `lvlovement of the head 9 lengthwise oi thehandle effects an opening or a closing of the jaws according to the direction or' movement thereof. Rotation ot the adjusting nut 5 moves the head 9 length` wise of the handle.
The adjusting nut 5 is elongated and lits snugly between the semi-cylindrical portions 2 of the handle. An annular groove 13, formed in the outer side of the nut 5 adjacent the rear end thereof, receives the annular rib a, thereby constituting the swivel connection between the nut and handle. iingerpiece lil, formed with the nut 5, abuts the rear end of the handle and conforms thereto and is roughened or milled on its outer surface to enable a iirm grip to be obtained thereon when rotating the nut 5 to adjust the jaws 6 to the work.
The beaks of the jaws 6 are elongated and are of similar or like formation-and are disposed in the length of the handle. The beaks of the jaws' may` operate as pliers or as wrench jaws to grip a nut or rod in substantially the same manner as a nut or pipe wrench.
What is claimed is: p i
l. A wrench of the character specified, comprising a handle consisting of similar 0r like sections, each of the sections ineluding cheek and semi-cylindrical portions, the cheek portions being` spacedand extending: in parallel relation, and the semi-cylindrical portions coming together when the sections areassembled, similar or like jaws pivoted betweenthe cheek portionsofvthe handle and having rearwardlyeurved extensions laterallyspaced and projecting' in opposite directions, an operating member comprising' a head and threaded stem, the head being slidable between said cheek portions and recessed in opposite sides to receive the curved vext-tensions of the jaws, and a nut engaging said threaded stem and disposed between f the semi-eylindrieal portions of the handle and connected thereto by means of a swivel joint.
2Q Awrench of the character specified,
Comprising a handle embodying similar or like sections, each section including` cheek and semi-cylindrical portions, the latter having an inner rib at `itsrrear end, similar or like jaws pivoted between the cheek portions of the handle and having rear eXtensions,=laterallyspaced, longitudinally curved and oppositely inclined, a head slidable between the cheek portions of the handle and recessed inv opposite sides to receive said extensions oi the jaws and haring opposed lateral flanges to engage opposite edge portions of the cheeks, a" threaded stein project-l ing from the head, a nut within the handle engaginnv Said threaded stem and having a swivel joint connection with the handle, and a finger-piece vat therear end of the nut abutting the rear end of the handle and conforming to the latter.
In testimony'whereof I atlix in preseneeof two witnesses.
