This invention relates to wrenches, an ob- 10 by the aws may be initially adjusted to the approximate position and moved into and out of gripping engagement through manipulation of a pivotally mounted handle.
With the above and other objects in view,
15 the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully. described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is an edge view. j
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of 'Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged sections taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corre-` sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates one of the handles of the wrench which carries at one end a rigid jaw 11. This jaw may be removably attached to the handle and for this purpose may be provided with a tongue 12 of the shape shown in Figure 1 and this tongue may be received within .a A screw 14 1s employed to hold thetongue in place.
The reference character 15 indicates the movable jaw of the wrench and this jaw is carried at the outer end of a shank 16. The
opposed face of the jaws 11 and 15 are preferably shaped and toothed as shown so as to provide a positive grip upon a pipe or other object.
The shank 16 extends through openings 17 provided in opposite ends of a guide 18,
the flatter `eatending wit/h the handle 10. The guide 18. is further' providedwithan opening 19, and this 'open'- mg accommodates an' interiorly threaded Ynut c 20 @which engages threads 21 provided 'upon L the shank 16'. As shown in Figuresl and '2 o f the y:drawings this nut is. knurled vor 'serrated so as to provide aproper grippingsurface upon its outer periphery. The oppositesi'desof the shankltare flat and are'provided with longitudinally disposed grooves 22. These grooves receive bars 23 whose inn-er ends are pivotally secured as shown at 24 within the bifurcat-ed end 25 of a handle 26. The bifurated end of this handle receives the handle 10 and is pivotally se` cured thereto as shown at 27. The outer ends of the bars 23 are provided with spaced ears 28 and 29 which are arranged at opposite ends of the nut 20. These ears may be formed by bending metallic strips of metal so as to provide vthe outer ears 29 with the ends of the strips arranged parallel with the bars 23 and the outer extremities of said strips disposed angularlyoutward as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. Y j
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that rotation of the nut 20" will move the shank 16 longitudinally, the inner end 0f the shank being formed withink the bifurcated end Vof the handle 26. rThis movement of the shank is'due tothe swivel connection between the nut 20 and the bars 23, which connection is provided by the ears 28 and 29. After the jaw 15 has been adjusted to the` approximate distance necessary to receive an object, inward pressure uponthe handle 26 will move the jaw 15 inward toward theV jaw 11 so as to effect final adjustment and gripping action. This movement of the jaw 15 through the handle 26 isy efected'by thegconnection between the bars 23, the nut n 20 and the shank 16. Ay spring30 is preferably secured to the handle 10 as shown at 31 and the free end of lthis spring bears upon the handle 26 so as details of construction and the right is herein ,from andfbeing lrigid reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is A pipe Wrench comprising a main handle, a stationary jaw carried by the handle, a guide on said handle and having an opening, a threaded shank slidably mounted in the guide and extending parallel with the handle and having grooves in opposite faces thereof, an adjusting nut engaging. the threads of the shank Within the guide and exposed through the opening of the latter` toL permit Y the movable javv to be adjusted relative to the stationary jaw, a bifureated movable Vhandle pivoted to the main handle, plates slidably mounted in the grooves and pivoted to the bifurcation of the movable handle, said plates extending through the nuts and bent upon themselves to form pairs of spaced ears adapted to engage the ends of the nut to permit final adjustment ofthe movable jaw relative to the stationary jaw by the movement of the movable handle.
p In testimony whereof I'ax my signature.
FRED D. MARIS.
