FURNACE-FRONT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HOWDEN HUME,"
a subject'of the King of the United King dom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Furnace-Fronts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fronts for forced draft furnaces and has for its primary object to provide a construction whereby the furnace is adapted to burn economically either coal alone or oil alone or both coal and oil, the arrangement being such that the change from one type of fuel to the other can be immediately effected without the necessity for removal. or replacement of firebars.
Fronts for furnaces operating on the well known Howden forced draft system are fitted at each side of the firing entrance with a valve-controlled air port, for passage of air to the under side of the grate, the side valve operating gear being operatively connected with means for locking the furnace door in such wise that the side valves must be moved to closed position before the door can be opened.
A furnace front of the kind just referred to is shown in U. S. patent to Howden, No. 923,178, dated June 1, 1909, and the present invention relates to certain novel features whereby the Howden furnace is adapted to burn either coal or oil, or both, without changing or removing any of the parts.
A preferred form of furnace front embodying the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace front constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent said line, and Fig. 3 is section on line 3-3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent said line and with some parts omitted. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view showing the connections between the furnace door locking lever and the oil supply valve.
Referring to the drawing, the improved furnace front comprises a casting 1 having side fines at each side of the firing entrance (4, as in the construction shown in the Howden patent above referred to. The admission of air to the furnace grate through said Specification of Letters Patent.
(Z at their tops for the admission of air to said chambers. The admission of air through the said openings or ports (Z is controlled by sliding valves 6 operated by arms 6 on the inside of the front plate of the furnace, said arms being connected with arms 6 on the outside of the said front plate.
The said arms 6* are preferably connected by a link 7 so that the sliding valves 6 will be simultaneously operated.
The improved furnace front is provided, above the firing entrance at, with an air chamber 8 having, at its top, openings 10 controlled by a sliding valve 11, said valve 11 being connected by a link 11 with an arm 11 inside of the front plate of the furnace front, said arm l1 being provided with an operating handle 11 on the outside of the front plate of the furnace. Mounted to eX- tend into the air chamber 8 is an oil burner 9 which may be supplied with oil through a pipe 13, and the supply of oil to said burner is controlled by a turning valve at 12. The oil supply valve may be opened and closed by an arm 12 jointed at 14: to a link 15 which is in turn jointed to a sliding bar 16 provided with a pin 17 which engages the furnace door locking lever 5, so that when the said slide is lifted to open the oil admission valve said locking lever will be moved to the position denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 1, to lock the furnace door at, so that the said door cannot be opened when the oil burner or burners are in operation, while the oil supply will be out off before said door can be opened. Then the oil valve is open the arm 12 will be in line with the adjacent portion of the oil supply pipe 13, or approximately so.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the present invention provides separate chambers through which coal and oil may be introduced to the furnace, the coal'being introduced through the firing entrance chamber a and the oil through the chamber 8. It will also be understood that the admission of air to the said chambers is controlled by separate valves, so that either oil or coal, or both, may be used as fuel, and the air Patented Feb. 17, 1920..

supply may be properly regulated according to the combustion desired. Thus if coal is being'burned alone the air supply may with the firing entrance for coal may be closed it oil alone is being consumed. It will also be understood that the furnace door 4:, closing the firing entrance chamber a,

What I claim is z 1. A furnace front, for use in burning coal or oil, or both, having a firing entrance chamber for use in burning coal, air controlling and guiding chambers located partly above the said firing entrance chamher and partly at the sides thereof and into which said firing entrance chamber opens, said air controlhng and guiding chambers being provided at their tops with valve-controlled ports for the admission ofair, an oil 1 admission chamber above the saidfiring entrance, an oil burner fitted in said lastnamed chamber which'is also provided at its "top withyalve-controlled ports for the adfor use in burning coal, a door-for closing said firing entrance, an oil burner fitted in said chamber, an oil supply pipe extending to said burner, and oil fuel controlling means operatively connected with said looking means and arranged to out off thesupply of oil beforethe door of said firing entrance'can be opened. 7
