FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J une 25, 1918,
Application filed June 25, 1917. Serial No. 176,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIS ZULVER, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at St. Helens Court, Great St. Helens, in the city of London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in and Relating to Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furnace fronts constructed with a fuel supply opening having around three sides thereof an air supply passage furnished with valves for controlling the admission of air, which air issues from the passage through a deflector and flows into the furnace where it meets the fuel spray at approximately a right angle.
According to the present invention the air instead of directly issuing into the furnace passes into the furnace front around the burner or burners and thence flows toward the fuel spray. The air supply is controlled by an upper valve which admits it into the air passage whence the air passes through openings in the top and sides of the inner wall of the passage. Between the ends of the passage and the floor of the furnace front are two oppositely disposed openings closed by valves or doors. When burning liquid fuel all the air inlets are opened and when burning solid fuel the openings in the sides of the air passage are closed in any suitable manner.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a boiler furnace provided with the improved construction of furnace front.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the furnace front, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line wm in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a modified construction.
The furnace front a is formed with a fuel supply opening 1 around the upper portion of which is an air passage 2. The upper Wall of said passage is formed with air-inlets 3 which are opened and closed by a slide 4 operated by means of a handle 5 from the exterior of the furnace front. In the lower wall of the air passage and opposite to the air inlets 3 are openings 6 through which air enters the fuel opening 1. This lower wall of the air passage 2 is also formed with two oppositely disposed openings 7, 7, which are closed by doors, 8, 8, fastened by bolts 8*. Below the closed ends of the air passage 2 are two more oppositely disposed openings 9, 9, formed in the wall of the fuel supply opening 1 and closed by pivotally mounted doors 10, 10. These doors are opened and closed by means of levers 11, 11, respectively mounted at the extremities of spindles 12, 12, which extend through the door 13 of the fuel supply opening 1, and which spindles are provided with handles 14, 1 1, on the outer side of the door 13. On each side of the fuel supply opening is a valve or damper 15 for controllin the supply of air to the underside of the re-bars 16; said dampers being opened and closed by means of handles 17, 17, on the outer side of the furnace-front. A handle 17 of the dampers 15 and the handle 5 of the slide 4 may be inter-connected, as shown on the one side in Fig. 2, by links 5, 17, to a bell crank lever 19, so that the opening and closin of the slide and the dampers may be efiected simultaneously. This insures a more suitable distribution and admission of air into the fire-opening, thus promoting combustion. Moreover, the simultaneous closure of all the air valves prevents the admission of air when the burners are shut off, thereby avoiding damage to the boiler. The links 5, l7, and the lever 19 may be either on the outside or the inside of the front plate.
The liquid fuel burner or burners 18 is or are mounted upon the door 13 of the fuel supply opening, and when burning liquid fuel all the air inlets 3 and the openings 7 and 9 are opened to supply air for admixture with the fuel.
When it is desired to burn solid fuel the door 13 with the burners thereon is removed and replaced by a fire-door of the usual type. The air inlet openings 7 and 9 are closed and the dampers 15 are opened.
Fig. 4 illustrates an alternative design in which the air passage 2 around the fire-opening is continued to the floor of the furnacefront where additional air openings 20 are made. In this case, the air admission into the fire opening from the air passage 2 is controlled by the slide 41, while the air through the floor of the furnace front is controlled by the valves 15, and the slide and the valves are connected together as previously described. When burning coal all Gopies of this patent may be obtained for openings, a handle on the exterior of the furnace for operating said slide, dampers for controlling the supply of air to the under sides of the furnace'grates, handles for op erating said dampers, a bell-crank lever, and
links connecting said slide handle and a damper handle to be simultaneously operated from said bell-crank lever, substantially as described CORNELIS ZULV ER.
