AIR-ADMISSION MEANS FOR BOILER-FURNACES.
Specification ofiLetters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed March 22, 1919. Serial No. 284,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jesse C. MARTIN, Jr.. a citizen of the lnited States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Admission Means for 3oiler-l urnaces.
The hereinafter described invention rclates to that class of refractory lined boiler furnaces wherein air is admitted for oxidizing the combustible gases evolved from the fuel therein and completing their combustion within the confines of the fire box.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to effect economy in fuel consumption by controlling the air admission into the the box combustion chamber in relation to the amount of fuel or combustible gases delivered therein by the simultaneous operation of the fuel feed and air admission means.
Another object of the invention is to minimize the amount of excess air required for combustion purposes by simultaneous control of the fuel and air feed into the tire box combustion chamber.
An important object of the invention is its adaptation to refractory lined fire box combustion chambers wherein fuel oil is injected as a protection against failure and leakage of the sheets, seams and tubes of the fire box caused by excess cold air being taken therein, as well as the deterioration of the refractory lining through expansion and contraction caused by excess chill air admitted into the combustion chamber through carelessness in not closing the independently operated air damper doors now commonly used in connection therewith, such protection to the tire box and refractory lining being especially necessary in refractory lined locomotive fire box combustion chambers when locomotives are standing on sidings or in roundhouses with fires out.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a broken side elevation of a locomotive boiler fire box combustion chamber provided with simultaneously operated fuel,
feed valve and air admittance means into the combustion chamber in accordance with -my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation showing attachment of fuel feed valve control to locomotive boiler head and operative connection of front and rear air inlet damper thereto. Fig. 3 is a broken plan section on line a 3, Fig. 2, showing means for simultaneously operating the fuel feed valve in bearings, 10, is damper door, 11.
and the front and rear air inlet dampers into combustion chamber.
Referring to the drawings numeral 1 is used to designate a refractory lined locomotive tire box boiler and 2 the pan forming therewith the combustion chamber 3. In the use of the invention fuel is injected into the combustionchamber through a burner, 4, being controlled by a. regulating valve, Air openings leading into the combustion chamber, 3, are provided at the front and rearof the pan, through damper door housings, (i, and 7, respectively. Fitted to lront damper door housing, 6, and mounted 1n bearings, 8, is damper door, 9,. and likewise fitted to rear damper door housing, 7, Proylded on front damper door, 9, is pivot hearing, 12, eccentric to bearings, 8, acting in relation thereto as a crank center, and likew se provided in rear damper door, 11. is pivot bearing, 13, eccentric to bearings, 10. Numeral l4 designates a fuel feed valvc handleand 15 a quadrant in operative re lation therewith, the quadrant being conveniently attached to the boiler head by bracket 16. Fastened to the handle.-l5. and depended therefrom is extension rod, 17, upon which are secured at its lower end the lever arms 18 and 19. Conmulnicatina with lever arm 18 in pivotal relation there with is rod,'20, extending horizontally to the front end of pan, 2, where it connects pivotally to one end of lever arm, 21. The opposite end of lever arm, 21, is secured on transverse rod, 22, one end of which rides in outboard bearing, 23, and the other end of which is fastened directly to the fuel regulating valve, 5, thus completing the connnunicating link necessary for operating the fuel regulating valve 5, by handle, 1.").
Numeral 2i designates a rod movably connected at one end to damper door pivot bearing, 13, and at its opposite end pivots ally to lever arm, 19, rod, 24, furnishing' the con'ipletlng hnk for operating the rear damper door, ll,'simultaneous with the fuel regulating valve, 5, through the movement of operating handle, '14.
Numeral 25 designates a lever arm fixed at one end on transverse rod, 22, and pivotally connected on its opposite end to one. end of connecting rod, 26. Rod, 26, has its opposite end movably connected to damper door pivot bearin 12, thereby furnishing the. link for simultaneously operating-the front damper door, 9, with the fuel feed valve, 5., by the movementof operating handle, 14.
may be of such length and so set that a rela-,
tively quick or slow opening of fuel feed *alve, 5, may be accomplished simultaneoiislywitli a given opening of the damper doors, Sand 11, and likewise the crank centers or pivot bearings, 12 and 13,-of the front and rear damper doors, respectively, may be changed to a shorter or longer throw in their eccentric relation to damper door bearings, 8 and 10, and consequently may be caused to open or close a relatively greater distance simultaneously with a given opening of the fuel feed valve, it therefore being clear that the means for simultaneously operating the fuel feed valve and damper doors are adjustable to meet the conditions under which the boiler furnace may be drafted. Again should it be desired to meet special conditions of service either the front or back damper may be operated simultaneously with the opening or closing of the fuel feed valve, 5, by disconnecting either the f out 01' rear connecting rods, 26 or 24 restectively. However, under normal operating conditions both front. and rear damper doors are arranged so that maximum opening of fuel feed valve gives maximum opening of air inlet through the damper doors into the combustion chamber and closing of the fuel feed valve closes the air inlet into the combustion chamber.
The operation of the invention is illustrated in the drawings by solid lines showing the simultaneous closing of fuel feed valve, 5, operating handle, 14, and front and rear damper doors, 9 and 11, and lrv dotted lines showing the simultaneous opennig of the fuel feed valve as indicated by operating handle at 145 with the frontand rear damper doors open in the posltion 9 and 11 It is obvious that many modifications of a manually operated fuel oil feed valve, op- 'GI'EIlJlVB connection between the fuel Oll feed valve and dampers, whereby upon regulating the flow of fuel oil through the valve the dampers connected thereto are simultaneously regulated and'a proportional admittance of fueloil and air into the fire box is effected.
