Description
J. H. HUME.
FURNACE FRONT. APPLICATION FILED 050.1.1917.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HOWDEN HUME, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES HOWDEN 8c COMPANY, LIMITED, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, A CORPORATION OF GREAT BRITAIN.
FURNACE-FRONT.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed December 1, 1917. Serial No. 204,820.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES HOWDEN HUME, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Fronts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, which is an improvement on or modification of that forming the subject of my co pending application No. 191056, filed September 12, 1917, relates to front-s for forced draft furnaces applicable to furnaces for burning either coal alone or 1 oilalone or both coal and oil.
The furnace front described in the specification of my said co-pending application No. 191056 is provided with an air control and guiding chamber for use in burning oil,
said chamber being located above the firing entrance and being fitted with an oil burner or burners, the supply of air to such chamber being by way of an opening or openings controlled by a manually operable slide valve or valves independent of the valves controlling the supply of air for combustion of coal.
According to the present improvement or modification, the construction is simplified and the Weight reduced in that the opening for admission of air-for use in burning oil is formed in the back plate of the furnace front, above the usual firing entrance used in burning coal, the outer face of the back 85 plate around the opening being provided with a valve seating face or being fitted with an air trunk on the outer end of which may be seated a manually operable valve.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections at right angles to one another of a furnace front embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the furnace front consists of a single casting affording a firing entrance 3, to be used in burning coal, said casting having a port at each side of and adjacent to the lower part of said firing entrance, said ports being controlled by butterfly valves 1, said valves being mounted .on a common spindle, 2, being thus operable conjointly, as in my U. S. Patent No. 1,019,155, dated March 5, 1912. The draft to the firing entrance 3 for coal is downward from the upper air trunk 12 through the ports controlled by the valves 1 to the chamber 13 beneath said firing entrance, as denoted by the arrows in Fig. 1.
The firing entrance chamber 3 is provided near its top at its opposite sides with ports 3 which communicate, through side chambers 3 formed by walls 3 outside of said firing entrance, with ports 6 in the walls 6 at the tops of said chamber 3 said walls 6 being above the level and at the opposite sides of said firing entrance, said ports 6 being controlled by slide valves 5, so that the down draft from the air trunk 12 through the ports 6 and the ports 3 to the said firing entrance may be properly regulated.
Above the firing entrance 3 an oil burner opening or port 7 is formed in the back plate 8 of the furnace front, said port being controlled by a manually operable valve 10 which serves to regulate the passage of air through said opening or port, said valve 10 being preferably movably mounted on the oil burner pipe 11 extending through a door 14: closing the front entrance to the chamber through which said pipe 11 extends.
That I claim is A front for a furnace for use in burning coal, or coal and oil, said front consisting of a single casting comprising front and back parts and having a firing entrance for coal, the side Walls of said entrance being provided at their upper parts with ports and with side and top walls, outside of said firing entrance, forming side chambers which are provided at their tops, above the level of said firing entrance, with upper ports, the back part of said front having, above said firing entrance, an oil burner port, combined with valves for controlling said upper and oil burner ports.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES HOWDEN HUME.
