To all whom it may concern: a a i u Be it known that I, EDWIN G. RUST, a citizen of the United .States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Blast-Furnace Tops, of which the following is a specification. 1
One object of myinvention is to so form and associate the upper part of the main lining and the domeof a blast furnace as to maintain the former at the properthickness at all points, as well as to so mount the dome that neither it I10rythe furnace shell shall be injured by the expansion of the lining under operating conditions. a
It is further desired to provide a novel form of joint or connection'between the body and the dome of a blast furnace which will permit of a limited relative movement of the latter under the action of expansion of the furnace lining ;the invention contemplating the use of motion-limitingmembers down the dome to its proper position after it has been displaced therefrom 1 a i These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, in which i Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the top of a blastfurnace invention as applied thereto; and

In the above drawings 1 represents the upper part of the fire brick lining of a blast furnace which is inclosed by a sheet metal shell 2 spaced away from it and having a filling 3 within this space. I claim:
1. The combination with the lining and shell of ablast furnace of a dome having its cylindrical part outside the substantially a substantially uniform cylindrical surface defined by said shell;
and means for movably supporting said dome from the top of the shell.
2. The combination in a blast furnace of a main lining of substantially uniform thickness from bottom to top; a shell for said lining; and a dome having its lining extending around and carried upon said main lining; with a flexible connection between the main lining and the dome, mounted to permit relative vertical movement of the latter.
8. The combination with, the main shell and lining of a blast furnace of a series of outwardly projecting brackets mounted having its lower portion supported on said plate, said plate having its inner edge connected to the shell and its outer edge connected to the dome so as to be free to move up and down therewith independently of said shell. 5. The combination of themain lining of a blast furnace; a shell around said lining; a ring and a series of brackets mounted on the upper part of said shell; an annular plate supported on the brackets and connected to the ring; a dome including a shell and lining carried on said plate; and a second ring connectin said dome shell and the plate and movable with the dome independently of the brackets.
6. The combination of the main lining of a blast furnace; a shell around said lining; a ring and a series of brackets mounted on the upper part of said shell; an annular plate supported on the brackets and connected to the ring; a dome including a shell and lining carried on said plate; and a second ring connecting said dome shell and the plate; with a shell for said dome lining flexibly connected to said first shell.
The combination of the main lining of a blast furnace; a shell around said lining; a ring and a series of brackets mounted on the upper part of said shell; an annular plate supported on the brackets and connected to the ring; a dome including a shell and lining carried on said plate; a second ringv connecting said dome shell and the plate; with means for limiting movement of the second ring away from the brackets.
8. The combination of the main lining of a blast furnace; a shell around said lining; a ring and a series of brackets mounted on the upper part of said shell; an annular plate supported on the brackets and connected to the ring; a dome including a shell and lining carried on said plate; a second ring connecting said dome shell and the plate; with bolts for limiting movement of the second ring away from the brackets.
9. The combination in a blast furnace of a main shell; a main lining; a dome including a lining and a shell flexibly connected to the main shell, the main lining of the furnace being of undii'ninished thickness adjacent the lower part of the dome.
10. The combination in a blast furnace of a main she'll; a main lining; a dome including a lining and a shell flexibly connected to the main shell; the main lining of the furnace being of undiminished thickness adjacent the lower part of the dome; with means for limiting the vertical movement of the dome relatively to the main part of the furnace.
