Description

UNIQITEDU STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDIVIN V. WINGARD, OF KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LIMEKILN.
SPEGIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 566,106, da.ted August 18, 1896.
Applicaoion filed Inne 30, 1896.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known filmt I, EDWIN V. WINGARD, a oitizen of the United States 0f Am ericaresiding ab Kennet Square, in the county of Chesfer, State 0f Pennsylvania, have inventecl certain new ancl useful Improvements in Limekilns, of Which the following is a specification.
My in vention 1*elates to limekilns; ancl theobject is 110 construct a new and improved cooling-chzunber, ab the lower portion 01' the base of the kiln, whereby the defeets attending present eonstruetions 2ue remedied and a cooling-chamher provided which is eifecthe in operation, which is durable and not likely to warp or become displaced, and whieh can be readily and eonvenienoly repaired, and, if clesirable, may be detachecl ancl replaced. Heretofore these cooling-chambers have been built o1 formed in the masonry 0f the kiln, 01 have been made from metal, cast 01 plante, ancl rigidly securecl by rivets to, 01 made integra-l with, a, supporting-plate built in the masonry, and have also been held by rods depencling from a, top plate am]. arranged 130 connect so the lower end of the shell of the chamber t0 hold the upper encl 0f the shellin a flange-groove in the 130p plate. In the instances where the chamber is built 0f masonry integral With the base and cupola tl1e effects 0f the heac, in is variable temperature, shortens the life of the part loy making 113 sive, te(li0us ancl extensive. In the instanees where the cooling-ehambenis construeted 0f metal the conneotions have proved uneertain, insufficient, ancl perishable.
It is the desig'n of my presentinvention so remedy existing defeets by an improvecl construction, ancl t-o provicle improved means f0r securing and maintaining the coolingehamber in position.
I have fully ancl olearly illustrated my improvements in the aeeompanying drawings, forming a part 0f this speeification, ancl wherein Figure 1 is a eentral veroical secion of the base ortion of a limekiln having my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, 0f a portion of the supportingplante. Fig. 3 is a detail of a portion 0f the upper encl 0f the metal Shell of the eooling- Serial N0, 597,572. No morlel.)
ehamber. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the fastening means for holding uhe chambershell 110 he flange of 11he supporting-plale.
The upper parts of the kiln, compris'ing the furnaees, the eupola, &c. may be 0f any 01": theapproved oonstrucnions, ancl for.this reas0n they have not been illustrated in the drawings.
Referring t0 the drawings, A designates the base portion 0fa limekiln made up 0f substantial mason-work of such dimensions as may suit lt to the purpose intended. In the upper part 0f the base is formed the lovver portion of he combustion-ohamber B of 13116 kiln, whioh is lined With fire-bricksb 01 sin1i lar durable and non-combustible material, eonstituning the usual lining Of the kiln, ancl in the hause is formed an arehecl way O, leading into the chamber 01 space c, in the cei1ter of the strueture, which surrouncls the cool ing-chamber.
D designates the eooling Charnbe1, 00mpose(l of a conical metal shell of suitable dil mensions and taper, substantially as shown in the clmwings. In the masonry ab the base of 1Jhe oombustion-ehamber B is inserted an annular plate P, formecl With an inwardly-inclined annular flange p 0n nhe inner edges extending cl0wn a desired dist-emee ancl provicled With a plurality 0f bolt-holes p, arranged a1: determined distances, substantially as indicated in the drawings. cmck ancl warp, and the reparation is expen- In the upper encl 0f the metal shell of the cooling-chamber are formed a plurality 0f elongated boltholes d, registering with the bolt-holes p in the flange of the annulm supporting-plate P. The inclines 0f the flange p and shell D ahne, and the upper end 0f the latter being clisposecl up and arouncl the flange fastening-loolts 1 a1e projected through the registering bol-hol'es, and then by screwing up the nuts 2 0f the bolts the Shell of the cooling-ohamber is helcl fir1nly to the supporting-flange, yet so that the variations of the contrac'nion and the expansion are not attended Wih tl1e usual effectsof Warps 0r breaks, the eonsequent movements being compensabed by the elongated bolt-holes in the Shell 0f the eooling-chamber. 011 the IOO stantial oross-bars 5 the ends of Whioh a1e sooured in the Walls of the masonry, and at the bottom of the tapering shell 3 is formed a horizontally-arranged annular flange 6, extencling inwardly, ancl on Whi0h the lining of tl1e oooling-ohamloer is supportecl, snbstan tially as shown in the drawings.
L clesignates the lining of the oooling-ohamher, consisting of firo-brioks or other suitable rofraotory material, extending throughout the interior of tho shell, and reaching up into proper oontaet and Union against the bottom of the lining of the combustion-ohamher, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 0f tho drawings.
T0 the botto1n of the shell 3 is suitaloly seoured the doors 7, whioh, as usual, swing on a horizontal plane to open and oloso the lower end of the cooling-ohamloer, the cloors being supported 011 cross-bars 8 8 seoured aoross tho drawroo1n or charnber.
The lower end of the coolingchamber is at such hoight above the fi0or of the base as to permit the oonvenient acoess under it of a ear or other suitable rooeptaole 110 take the lime from the cooling-ohamloer to oarry it for deposit to any plaoe desired.
lt Will 100 perooivecl fro1n tho foregoing (lesoription, taken in connection With the drawings, that I have provided a oooling-ohamber about Whi0h the atmosphere has free exterior cireulation and in whioh the body of the cooler 1nay 100 detaohed and replaoecl, and so hold as t0 compensate fo1 oontraotion ancl expansion, and also by providing a refraotory lining I greatly improve the durability ancl integrity of the struotnre.
\Vhat I olaim, "ancl desire to seenre by Lettors Patent, is
l. In a limokiln, a cooling-ohamber, looated in the base of the kiln, oomprising a oircular supportingring-plate formed. with an interior flange inclinecl inward ancl extenc'ling downvvard and. providecl With a plurality of holtholes; a oonieal metal shell having its upper end fittecl on the flango of the supportingplate and provicled W4i'th bolt-holes adjaoent to the upper encl, olamping-bolts projeoted through the holes of the sai l flange ancl shell a taporing metal shell on oho lower end of the oonical 1netal shell,for1ned with an ontwardly direetecl horizontal annular flange at its upper encl and an inwarclly-clireoted flange at its 10W61 end, and a lining of refraotory material supported on the lower flange of the tapering shell and extending over the interior of the oonioal metal shell.
2. In a limekiln, a oooling-chamloer 00mprising an annular plato P formed With an inwardly-inolined annular flange p, and provided With a plurality of bolt-holes p; a 1notal EDWIN V. VINGARD.
