JQW. NESMITH.
BLAST FURNACE. No. 512,053. Patented Jan; 2, 1894.
Witmooeo I Wm n'HoeMPHINa COMPANY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IV. NESMITH, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO THE COLORADO IRON WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
BLAST-FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,053, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed April 24, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. NEsMITH,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blast-Furnaces,
. of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for supportingand securely holding in place the lower ends of the water jacketsv ported in any suitable manner, but preferably by jack screws B, B, and provided with an upwardly extending rim R, R which may or may not be continuous around the furmice, and is suitably shaped to prevent the lower ends of the sectional water jackets O, O, forming the lower zone of the furnace, from bulging or moving out under the pressure of the contents of the furnace. This plate may be strengthened by any suitable arrangement of ribs, as at S, S. It is made to form substantially a continuous piece. No special precautions are necessary to make Serial No.4 71,644. tll'omodel.)
tight joints between the several parts, as the molten contents of the furnace flowing into such interstices will chill and form a tight and efiective working joint of itself, and prevent any further escape of the molten contents.
It should be understood that I do not claim as new, and am making no endeavor to secure by Letters Patent, any construction of a blast furnace in which the bottom is made in several parts; certain of the parts, particw larly those immediately below the interior of the furnace being hinged to the other parts and arranged to swing down and expose the interior of-the furnace. Nor do I claim as new, any construction of a blast furnace, in which a continuous bottom plate is permanently fastened to the lower end of the water jacket by bolts or rivets.
I claimi In combination with a stack, supports therefor, a lining for said stack, water jackets forming the lower zone of the furnace and a continuous plate D forming the bottom of the said water jacket having a flange encircling the lower end of said jacket, said bottom being removably supported, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN W. NESMITH. Witnesses:
F. D. Gnoss, FREDERICK T. SNYDER.
