Description

W. H. BAILEY.
BLAST FURNACE TOP, APPLICATION FILED DEC.I8, s15.
Patented Aug. 8,1916.
WILLIAM H. BAILEY, OF GARY, INDIANA.
BLAST-FURNACE TOP.
Llhiifilill.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, i916.
Application filed December 18, 1915. Serial No. 67,549
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVmLIAM H. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blast-Furnace Tops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to blast furnaces, and has particular reference to a novel top construction therefor.
An object in the present construction is to provide a top for blast furnaces which shall be of simple construction, easily built in place and supported independently of the masonry shaft for the blast furnace. 7
As a reason for the last mentioned object, it is well known that the masonry shaft of a blast furnace is subject to considerable longitudinal movement under expansion and contraction, and if the masonry lining for the top is directly connected to the masonry shaft and the masonry top is anchored in any manner by structural work, as is usually necessary, the top, r shaft, will be distorted shortly after being blown. in.
An object, therefore, in the present construction is to provide means whereby the top, including its lining, are supported independently of the masonry shaft, thus giving freedom to the shaft for whatever expansion is necessary-n The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a blast furnace to. which my improvement.
has been applied.
In the drawings it will be seen that I provide a shell 10 for the blast furnace shaft, and a masonry lining 11, thelining and shell terminating at the point 12. A plate 13, in the form of an annular, laterally projecting shelf, is secured to the shell 10 by means of an angle 14;, the outer edge of the shelf being braced by members 15 se cured to the shell at a lower point. The shell, or covering, 16, for the top is secured to the outer edge offthe shelf 13, this covering being lined by masonry 17, as is usual in such cases. It will be noted that the @loniea spherical masonry ain masonry rests on the shelf 18, and that both the coveringlfl and the lining 17 are supported by the shell 10 of the blastfurna'ce shaft and are located entirely outside of the shell. This permits of an increase in the size of the top and provides for efficient distribution of the burden through the hopper 1S and the bell 19. These elements are not do tailed as they form no part of the present invention.
It will be noted that while. the top is not connected to the blast furnace shalt, it is nevertheless rigidly secured to the shell without danger of being blown off if a slip occurs; also that the construction permits of the use of a masonry lining for the top without lessening the space within which distribution may be made and prm'iding ample space for the location of downcomers in the top, if desired.
I claim 1. In a blast furnace, the combination of a shaft, including a shell and a masonry lin ing, a shelf secured to said shell and project ing outwardly from the shell, and a masonry top built on and supported by said shelf, ubstantially as desc bed.
2. In a blast furnace, the combination of a shaft, including a masonry lining and a metallic shell, an annular plate secured to said shell near the top thereof and projecting laterally and outuuirdly therefrom, a top shell seemed to said shelf and a ria-onry lining for the top built on said shelf, substantially as described.
3. In a blast furnace, the coudziualion of a shaft, comprising a metallic shell and a masonry lining, an annular shelf projecting outwardly from said shell, and a hemitop-resting on. and supported by said shelf, substantially as described.
Signed at Gary, Indiana, this lth day of December, 1915.
