VALENTINE I-I. MILLER, on sat LoUIs, MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE BEnsE-HoLEEE.
have invented certain new and useful Im- 'provements in an Adjustable Brush-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lmprovements 1n :brush holders and has for its primary object to produce a device of this character, that is adjustable longitudinally and laterally, for use in connection with brushes of various sizes. I
A further object of the invention hes in the provision of an adjustable handle, whereby the holder when attached to the brush may be manipulated in an easy and convenient manner. 7 7
A further object of the invention aims to provide a combined brush holder, tack puller, and scraper, said elements assistingin performing the function of the scrub brush when used on floors containing sticky substance.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course i of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and inwhich l ke numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1, is a side elevatlon showing my improved holder attached to a brushof the ordinary structure;
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary top or plan vlew showing the adjustable connection between the sections of the holder;
Fig. 3, is a bottom view showing the transversely adjustable clamps earned by the sections, and
Fig. 4, is-a detail sectional view showing the pivotal connection between the sectlons.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the letter A designates the holder comprising sections 5 and 6 that are so shaped when joined together as to be of approximately the same configuration as the back of the brush B to which they are attached. The section 6 has an extension 7 that overlaps the extension 8 of the section 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Adja cent the free extremity of the extenslon 8 1 provide a vertically extending pin 9 that ex tends upwardly through the longitudinally extending slot 10 formed in the extenslon 7.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16,1921.
Application filed November 6, 1919. Serial No, 336,190.
The portion of the pin passing through the slot 10 is equipped with the collar 11 that is held thereon by the washer 12. The longitudinal edges of the slot 10 are beveled so that the washer will lie flush with the top of the extension. Thispermits the sections to be adjusted longitudinally with relation to each other, for use in connection with brushes of various lengths.
Extending transversely across the bottom of the sections approximately midway their length are grooves 13 adapted for the reception of the clamping plates 14. Each groove is provided with two plates, the inner ends of which overlap and are slotted asat 15, a substantial distance to receive the vertically extending bolts 16 that extend up through the sections being adjusted by the wing nuts .17. at their ends. Thus the plates may be adjusted laterally through the medium of the connecting bolts 16. At each endof the groove 13 a thin strip of metal extends across the grooves and plates being embedded in the sections, so as to lie flat therewith. The outer or free extremities of the plates 14': are bent downwardly at right angles and then inwardly forming hooks 19 that extend down over the sides of the brush back and beneath the same, thus firmly and securely holding the brush in engagement with the arms against any possibility of independent movement or casual disconnection. A fiber strap 20 extends between the bolts 16 of the two sections being secured thereon by the wing nuts 17 This strap constitutes a handle for simplifying the manipulation of the brush and one of its ends is provided with a series of openings 21, permitting the strap to be adjusted according to the length of the brush in connection with which the holder is used.
The forward end of the section 5 is recessed on its bottom forming a pocket 22 in which a blade or scraping element 23 is pivotally mounted. This pivot 24 extends through the section adjacent its forward end and is adjusted by a wing nut 25. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the scraping element when not in use is disposed within the pocket, so as not to interfere with the operation of the brush. To move this memher to an operative position the wing nut 25 is loosened and the plate will automatically swing to its proper position, whereupon the nut 25 is again tightened and the device is ready for use. The outer edge of brush.
sired.
In operation, the'sections of the holder are adjusted longitudinally according to the length of the brushwith which it is to be used. The wing nuts 17 are then loosened so as to permit lateral movement of the plates 14 which are adjusted according to the width of the brush back. l/Vhen the necessary adjustments have been made the holder is placed upon the back of the brush and the clamping plates moved inwardly until the clamping arms 19 firmly engage the edge of the brush, whereupon the wing nuts are tightened to the extent that the holder will be securely attached to the The brush is then used in the ordinary manner and should the floor upon which the brush is being used contain sticky substance, the scraping element 23 may be used for removing the same, this facilitating the performing of the function of the brush. If necessary the strap 20 which constitutes a handle maybe adjusted according to the distance at which the sections are placed. It is obvious from the foregoing facts that a device has been constructed which is simple and yet eflicient in operation.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and descrlbed is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape,
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim l. The combination of a brush holder comprising two sections adjustably joined together, clamps extending transversely of the sections,-set screws for adjusting the clamps, and a strap extending between the set screws of the sections forming a handle.
2. A brush holder comprising a pair of sections, overlapping extensions extending from the sections, means adjustably connecting the extensions, transversely extending grooves being formed in the sections, and adjustable clamps secured in the grooves for clamping the brush.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
VALENTINE H. MILLER.
