" HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed April 21, 1919. Serial No. 291,629.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. LEVINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and -State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders and an object is to provide a holder which can be adjusted for tightly clamping scrubbing brushes of different sizes and shapes. Another object is to provide a holder which can be used to clamp a bar of soap, or other cleaning material, and can be adjusted to bring the cleaning material into proper po sition from time to time as it is worn down.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the application in one form,
Figure 1 is an isometric view. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates the main portion of a metal sheet member, one end of which is bent down to form a flange portion 12 which is provided with an inturned edge 14 to provide a fixed clamping jaw. The other end of the sheet metal or main top member is bent down to provide a flange portion 16 corresponding in extent to the portion 12, but not having an inturned edge. A jaw for cooperating adjustably with the fixed jaw 14 is provided in the following manner. A sheet metal strip 18, the extent of which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, is provided at each end with a lug 20 which is bent upwardly, these lugs being then bent inwardly to provide guiding margins 22 extending over the main top member 10, whereby the member is slidably mounted thereon. The member 18 is bent downwardly at one side to form a flange portion 24 which is bent inwardly to form a jaw 26. An adjusting screw 28 having a head 30 at its outer end is mounted in a screw threaded aperture in the downturned flange 16, and the inner end of the screw is swiveled to the flange 24, preferably by extending the reduced end of the screw through an aperture in the flange 24 and then upsetting or riveting this reduced end into an enlarged portion of the aperture in the flange 24. A plate or follower 32 is adjustably mounted underneath the member 10 by means of a screw 34 having a head 36 at its outer end and mounted in a screw threaded aperture in the member 10. The inner end of the screw is swiveled to the follower 32 preferably in the same manner that the screw 28 is swiveled to the flange 24. A shank 38 by means of which a handle may be attached to the holder is conveniently formed from the member 10 in the following manner: This member is cut on the two lines 40 and 42 and a portion of the metal between these lines is bent upwardly at an acute angle and shaped into tubular form to provide a socket.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. Brushes of various sizes and shapes can be clamped between the jaws 14 and 26. Bars of soap or other cleaning material may also be clamped between the' jaws, and as the material wears down the follower may be moved toward the plane of the jaws in order to rigidly back up the cleaning material.
I claim:
1. A holder comprising spaced clamping jaws, means for moving said jaws relatively toward and away from each other, a follower mounted above the space between said jaws, and means for moving said follower parallel with the plane of said jaws.
2. A holder comprising a top member provided with a fixed jaw, a member slidably mounted on said top member, said slidable member being provided with a jaw to cooperate with said fixed jaw, an adjusting screw mounted in a screw threaded aperture provided in a flange depending from said top member, said screw having its inner end swiveled in said last named jaw, a follower mounted beneath said top member, and an adjusting screw mounted in a screw threaded aperture in said top member and having its inner end swiveled in said follower.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
HARRY B. LEVIN-S.
