' ATTORNEY. v
' some GALKA, or LEAvENwoRTH, KANSAS.
To all whom itmdy/oonoeW/i Be it knownith at'l, JoiiNGAnnA, a citizen of loland, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas;
' haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoemakers Jacksi of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shoeniakers jacks and has particular reference to a-lasting stand wherein the shoe last is locked in position on thepost of. the lasting stand to be securely retained in positionagainst accidental displacement,
intheprovision ofa shoemakers jack lasting stand wherein manually operable latch devices are carried by the, post of the jack for interlocking engagement with the shoe to secure the same in position, the locking device being manually operable to permit the removal of the shoe last. I
- 'With the above general objects in view view of a shoemakers jack constructed in accordance with the present invention, there being illustrated a curved ack post mounted upon a part of a shoe machine,
Fig. 2 is a fr'agmentaryside elevational view, partly in section of the post head and shoe last positioned thereon,
Fig. 3 is a verticalsectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1 showing the tensioned latch devices for retaining the shoe last on the post Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Fig. 2 showing the latch heads of the tension latch devices engaging the shank of the shoe last,
Fig. 5-is a horizontal sectional view taken 7 on line VV of Fig. 2 showing the resilient mounting of the latch device in the jack stand, and

Referring. more in detail to. the accom;
panying drawing and particularly Figs. 1
.tion with the last retaining latches carried and 5, showing the preferred form of the invention the reference numeral 1 designates a machine construction upon which a curved ack post 2 is mounted and secured in positron thereon by the fastening device 3. The post 2 is reinforced by lateral rods 4 and is provided upon the uppere nd thereof with a head 5 supporting the shoe last 6 removably positioned thereon. a
In order to provide a lock or latching device for retaining the last6 upon the postif head :5, the post head being of increased cross sectional area aslndicated in Figs. 21
and 3 is providedwith an upper extension 7 into which oppositely disposed vertical grooves 8 formed in the head 5 extend while the upper end of the extension 7 is provided r with a transverse slot'9communicating with the vertical slot 8, the slots 8 at each side of the head 5' and extension 7 being laterally offset relative to each other and opening at v the adjacent sides or. the. head and BXiIQIl sion shown in Figs. 2 and 3. latch lever 10 is disposed in. each groove 8 and is pivotally mounted 0111 the transversely extending pin 11 and carries a beveled latch head 12 at the upper end thereofextending through the transverse groove 9'andprojecting laterally thereof as shown in Figs. 3 and at. c The lower end of the latch lever 10 carries an outwardly directed right angular operating handle or arm 13 projecting beyond the body portion of the head- 5 for engagementby the operator in shifting the latch lever 10; As shown in Fig. '3 the inner wall of the slot 8 in the head 5 is inclined as at 8 to provide for an inward swinging movement of the 'lowerend of the latch lever- 10 against the tenslon of the spring 14 engaging the inner face ofthe latch lever at one of its ends with the other' end thereof received in the socket-,5 formed in the head 5 and communicating with the slot 8 The rearwall of the slot 8 injthe head extension I 7 is formed perpendicular and forms an abutment stop for the outer endof the latch i I lever.
Asshown in Figs. 2 and 3 the shoelast carries a mounting shank 15 having a socket- I therein, received on the head extension 7 while the inner face of the shank socket ad 11 0 movable therer'from.
jacent the latch heads 12 is provided with keeper sockets 15' for the reception of the v beveled ends of the latch heads 12.
extend laterally of the head extension 7 and by placing the shank 15 of the last 6 the latch heads 12 are moved inwardly by the engaging walls of the last shank to shift the latch levers 10 on the pivots 11 against the tension of the springs 14, and when the last has been moved home to the position shown inFig. 3 the latch heads 12 under influence. of the springs 14: will move into keeper sockets 15 therefor. Should it be desired to remove the last for purposesof placing upon the stand a different sized one, the handles 13 at opposite sides of the stand head 5 are movedinwardly against the tension of the springs i l to shift the latch levers 10 on their pivots to displace the latch heads from engagement with the shank of the'las't, at which time, the last is freely slidably re- A fastening strap 16 is carried by the machine frame l for engagement with'a shoe placed on the last 6 and may be adjusted by the buckle connection 16 of the strap for rigidly holding the shoe positioned.
A modified form of the invention is shown in Figfivwherein the last post 2 is constructed independently of a machine mounting for positioning on the floor or other support, the same being provided upon its upper end with a head 17 having an extension 18 With the latch devices 10' carried thereby'for engagement with the last in the mannerde to any particular mounting for the post of the lasting jack, as the novelty strictly resides in the construction of the post head and the latch device associated therewith for re taining a shoe last in position thereon, and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. I
What is claimed as new is A lasting jack comprising a-post, a head carried thereby, an extension carried by said head, said head and extension having laterally offset slots formed in opposite Walls thereof and opening at the opposite sides of the head, tensioned latch levers pivotally mounted in the post head, operating handles for the latch levers extending laterally of the post head, latch heads carried by said levers extending laterally of the head extension, and a last mounted on said head extension and having keeper sockets therein for the latch heads.
i In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
