JOSEPH SZIGETI-IY, O35 HIMLERVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SHOE-BUTTONING DEVICE.
Application filed April 15, 1922.
To all wiwmz't may concern Be it known that I, Josnrri fiarenrnr, a citizen of Hungary, residing at flimlervllle, in the county of Martin and State of Ken- 1 tucky, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in a Shoe-Buttoning Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to button hooks such as are used in buttoning boots and shoes and also gloves, and it has for an ob ect to provide a novel form of button hook which will facilitate the insertion of the buttons in the button holes.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended cla1ms 1n wh ch the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspectlve view illustrating my improved button hook as applied to a shoe to button the latter.
Fig. 2 is a face view of my improved but ton hook alone.
F ig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 4:4t of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showlng a modification.
Fig. 6 is a detail view indicating the man ner in which the hooks engage the button, the hooks being shown in horizontal section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
As here shown my improved button hook comprises a U-shaped frame element or standard consisting of the legs 10 and top piece 11. This frame element may be of ornamental design as indicated and the legs may be provided with feet 12 which. engage the shoe.
Extending longitudinally between the legs 11 is a bar 14 which is arranged to have both a longitudinal movement, and a swinging movement in the plane of the frame element upon the top piece 11 thereof as a pivot or fulcrum, the bar having a combination sliding and pivotal engagement with the top piece. This engagement is here effected by forming an enlarged aperture 15 in the top piece 11, the wall of this aperture having a number of socket elements 16, as here shown four, spaced therearound and each containing a ball 17. The bar 1 1, which 1s here of hexagonal cross section, passes between these finecification oi. Letters Patent.

balls, sufficient play being left for the bar to swing.
The bar 1a is held against swinging movement transversely to the frame 10, 11 by means of a horizontal rod 20 extending be tween and fixed at its opposite ends to the legs 10 at a distance below the top piece 11, this rod passing freely through a longitudinal slot 21 in the bar 14. The bar 14 is guided in its swinging movement in the plane of the frame 10, 11 by a pair of links 22 pivoted at one end as at 28 to one of the legs 10 of the frame and at their opposite ends as at 2 1 to the bar 14, these links being located a short distance below the rod 20.
The upper end of the bar 14: may be formed with a suitable handle element 14:, while its lower end has fixed thereon a compound hook member adapted to engage the button of the shoe or other article to draw it through the button hole. This hook member comprises a pair of prongs 25 which are suitably curved to engage under the button and whose back portions diverge slightly away from one another as shown in Fig. i-.
In the use of my improved button hook the hooked members 25 are projected through the button hole and engaged with the button, the bar 14, extending at an oblique angle with respect to the adjacent surface of the shoe. The bar is then swung to a vertical position and the frame 10, 11 is moved downwardly, engaging the portion of the shoe in which the button hole is formed so as to force it downwardly over the button which is thus projected through the button hole. The hook is then disengaged from the button.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification in which the supporting frame is dispensed with, the hook comprising a bar 30 bifurcated at its lower end into a pair of hook members 31 whose back portions 31 are slightly inclined, in the plane of the hook members, to the bar. The manner in which either of the hook members 25 or 31 engages the button is indicated in detail in Fig. 6, the button being indicated at 34- and the button hole at 35, the hooks engaging over that side of the button which is, when the button is unfastened, farthest from the button hole and drawing the button up to the button hole, which latter they act to spread so as to facilitate passing of the button therethrough.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A button hook comprising ajU-shaped frame, a bar arranged for swinging and sliding movement in said frame, and a compound hook member on said bar.
2. A button hook comprising a U-shaped frame, a bar slidably and swingably passing through an aperture in said frame and earrying a compound hook member, and a link engaged with said frame and bar and guiding said bar in its swinging movement.
3. A button hook comprising a U-shaped frame, a bar slidably and swingably passing through an aperture in said frame and earrying .a compound hook member, and a link engaged with said frame and bar and guiding said bar in its swinging movement, and a rod carried by said frame and passing through a longitudinal slot in said bar to prevent transverse swinging movement "of the latter.
1-. A button hook comprising a U-shaped frame consisting of legs and an apertured top piece, a series of balls rotatably seated in the wallet the aperture in the top piece, a bar passing freely through said aperture between the said balls and being formed with a longitudinal slot, a rod supported by the legs of the frame and passing through said slot, a pair of links pivotally engaged at opposite ends With said bar and one of the legs of .the frame, and a compound hook member on said bar. a
5. A button hook comprising a U-shaped frame, a bar arranged for swinging and sliding movement in said frame, and a eompound hook member on said bar, said hook member comprising a pair of separated prongs.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
