UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MALCOLM BRUCE JACKSON, OF HAMIOTA, MANITOBA, CANADA.
TROUSERS-STRETCHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALooLM B. JAoKsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Hamiota, Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Trousers-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to apparel apparatus, and its object is to provide a new and im roved trousers stretcher, which is simple an durable in construction, very effective in operation, easily applied and readily removed, and arranged to remove bagginess and wrinkles in a comparatively short time.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied, the lower end of the trousers leg being shown in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the improvement; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 83 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an edge-view of a modified form of the improvement.
The trousers A to be stretched to proper shape are supported at their upper ends by suspenders or other means from a hook or the like, and in the lower end of each trouser leg is relnovably inserted a weighted stretching device having gripping blocks or shoes B, B adapted to engage the inside of the trouser leg at o posite points thereof. The blocks B and ii are pivotally connected by levers C, C with the upper end of the shank D of a weight D, and the said blocks B, B are also pivotally connected by levers E and E with a head F, in which is mounted to slide up and down the shank D of the weight D. The pairs of levers C, E and C, E are pivoted together near the outer ends thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings, and the pivotal ends of the pairs of levers engage slots in the gripping blocks B, B, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, so that when the device is applied, the weight D in exerting the desired pull on the levers C, C causes an outward movement of the blocks B, B for the latter to firmly grip the inside of the trousers leg, thus attaching the device in position, at the same time exert- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing a downward pull on the trousers leg owing to the action of the previously mentioned weight D.
On the front of the head F is fulcrumed a spring-pressed catch G adapted to engage teeth or serrations D on the shank D of the weightD, to hold the latter against accidental upward movement but to allow free downward sliding movement of the weight D when applying the device and after the weight D is released on the part of the operator.
In applying the device theoperator having hold of the head F first pushes the weight D upward, so that the blocks B and- B are moved inward towards each other, and then the device is pushed into the lower end of the trouser leg, after which the operator releasesthe weightD, but holds the head F a sufficient length of time, that is, until the weight D has moved downward and caused an outward movement of the gripping blocks B, B for the latter to firmly grip the inside of the trousers leg, as before mentioned and illustrated in Fig. 1. When this has been done the operator can release the head F, as the device is now firmly held within the trousers leg and a downward or a stretching pull is exerted on the trousers leg by the weighted device. Thus by the arrangement described the trousers are stretched by the weighted device to remove all bagginess or wrinkles and to maintain the desired usual longitudinal creases at the front and rear of the trousers.
Although I have shown and described a preferred means of moving the gripping blocks B, B outward and inward by the action of the weight D, i-tis evident that this construction can be readily varied without deviating from the spirit of my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the articular construction shown and describe for moving the gripping blocks into and out of gripping action.
As illustrated in Fig. 4, both legs A, A of a pair of trousers are engaged by gripping devices I, I of the character above described, the outer lower ends of the said gripping devices being connected with each other by a cord J supporting a pulley K carrying a weight 11 so that both legs A A are simultaneously stretched by a single weight.
Having thus described my invention, I
ping blocks for engagement with the inside of the trouser leg at opposite sides thereof, pairs of levers pivotally connected with the said blocks, a weight connected with a lever of each pair, a head connected with the other lever of each pair of levers and in which head the said weight is mounted to slide and means for permitting movement of the Weight in one direction and preventing its movement in the other direction.
2. A trouser stretcher, comprising gripping blocks for engagement with the inside of the trouser leg at opposite sides thereof, pairs of levers pivotally connected with the said blocks, a weight connected with alever of each pair, a head connected with the other lever of each pair of levers and in which head the said weight is mounted to slide, and a spring catch held on the said head and engaging teeth on the said weight to hold the latter against upward movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MALCOLM BRUCE JACKSON.
