7 within which the hide is contained and by which the hide is secured and held stretched by fastenings on the frame to which strings connecting with the hide are secured.

Among the essential objects of the inven tion is to avoid the use of nails or tacks as a means of fastening for securing the hide strings to the frame and in place thereof to provide the frame with permanent fastenings for the hide strings which may he used again and again as long as the frame lasts.

A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening for the hide strings of simple construction; one that will admit of an easy fastening of the hide string or release of it; one that will admit of the hide the hide and will grip the string when thus tensioned and hold the tension without letup or slipping, and especially to provide a fastening that cannot become guimned, inasmuch as the operative parts are concealed or housed within the frame.

The invention can best be seen and under stood by reference to the drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan of the improved hidestretcl'iing device showing the fame equipped with the various hide string fastenings, to which the invention especially pertains.

Referring tothe drawings:--

1 represents the frame preferably rectangular in form as are also its several bars. Ac-

cording to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the frame is of wood as distinguished from a metal frame. Located within the frame is the hide or leather 2 to be held stretched. Secured to the hide at spaced points around the edge 1928. Serial No. 272,682.

1101' ends of each of these strings are toggles f by which the attachment ofthe strings to the hide is secured in the usual manner. The outer ends of the strings are secured to the several bars of the frame and the strings held taut and the skin thereby stretched by permanent fastenings 6 on the frame, which fastenings form the essential subject-matter of the invention.

The fastenings 6 are arranged upon the several bars of the frame prefe "ably at periodically spaced distances from one another and preferably such number of fastemngs are employed as will accommodate a hide or ski n having a maxinuilm number of attaching strings. The fastenings 6 are made as follows: For the purpose of obtaining an initial setting for each fastening the frame is provided with a hole or opening 7 extending through the outer side or face of the frame to and through the inner side or face thereof. This hole or opening is prepared by a boring in the frame, The preparation of the hole or opening 7 through the frame is also such as to provide an interior shoulder or edge 8 within the frame. This shoulder or edge is prepared by making that portion 9 ofthe opening which passes through that portion of the frame adjacent its outer face of smaller diameter than that portion 10 of the opening pa ng through the inner side or face of the frame. Extending into the opening 7 in the frame is a bolt 11 having a head 12 and a shank 13, the outer end 1d of which is made threaded. The belt is extended intothe openingfrom the outer side of the frame so that the head of the bolt will draw against the outer side or face of the frame at which point the frame ispreferably provided, when of wood, with a socket 15 into which the head may draw. The shank of the bolt is preferably of a diameter slightly less than the portion 9 of the hole in the frame through which it extends so as to have an easy sliding fit therein. The extension of the bolt is preferably such that its inner end will lie within the enlarged portion 10 of the openingin the frame inside the inner side or face thereof when the head of the bolt is seated against theaouter side or face of the frame as aforesai Arranged upon the threaded end 14 of the bolt in extension of it an end-piece lti in the nature of a cap. This end-piece when in place projects into the enlarged portion 10 of the opening in the frame and presents inside the opening an edge or shoulder 17 which is opposed to the edge or shoulder 8 onthe frame. The endpiece is of slightly less d1- aineter than the opening 10 in which it is contained in order that it may have aneasy sliding fit therein. The extension of the endpiece 16- from the inner end of the bolt issuch that when the bolt is positioned with it's head bearing against'the outer side or face of the frame, the endpiece on the inner end of the bolt will then project inward some little distance beyond the inner side or face 7 of the frame.

Arranged upon the bolt within the en larged portion 10 of the opening through the frame, with bearing at one end against the shoulder or edge 8 of the frame and at its other end against the shoulder or edge 17 presented by the inner end of the'endpiece, is a coiled tension spring 18. In the assembling of the fastening the bolt is first passed from the outer side through the opening 7 in'the frame with the inner end portion of. the bolt contained within the enlarged portion 10 of the opening. The springlS is then placed upon the inner pro eeting end of the bolt by insertion through the opening 10 from the inner side of the frame. The endpiece is then applied to the threaded end of the'bolt by insertion into the opening from the inner side of the frame.

As the endpiece is then screwed or tightened ,onto' the inner end of the bolt it will operate applied to the endpiece 16 of the fastening.

This pressure acts through the bolt, the spring 18 then becomes compressed to displace the head of the bolt away from the outer side or face of the frame, the shank of the bolt adjacent the head then becoming exposed. The string is then wrapped around the exposed portion of the shank with one or more windingsandthen the endpiece is released and the head will be drawn by the spring forcibly against the frame, thereby holding'the end of 'the string securely in place, and when the outer side or face of the frame is provided with a socket into which the head draws, the end'of the string will beheld by the'head within this socket. For releasing any one of thestrings the head of I the bolt-isdis iilaced by pressure on the endpiece the same as before andthe string then unwrapped and released from the fastening. To prevent 't'raying of the strings by drawing over the sharp corner edges of the frame their edges adjacent each fastening is provided with a cutout or groove 20.

In Fig. 4 a slight modification is shown in that the frame is not of wood but of metal piping which might well be used in the present connection. The structure is almost precisely the same as in the case of a wooden frame. Borings are formed in the piping which correspond with the innings in the wooden frame and the relation of the bolt and other operating parts is precisely the same, all the parts being numbered the same as with the wooden frame, the only exception being that no socket is provided with the piping for receiving the head of the bolt when seated.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States 1. In a hide-stretching device of the type specified having a frame in which the hide is stretched by strings attached to the hide connected to the frame, fastenings for securing the strings to the frame, said fasteniugs comprising shanks slidable within openings in the frame and heads carried by the shanks having drawing engagement with the side of the frame or outward displacement therefrom as the shanks are moved, and tensional means functioning to hold said heads in. normal drawing engagement with the side of the frame but with permitted outward displacement therefrom as aforesaid whereby on displacement of said heads said strings'may be wound around the then exposed shanks and afterward held bound between the heads and the frame as the heads are allowed to resume their normal drawing engagement therewith as aforesaid.

2. In a hide-stretching device of the type specified having a frame in which the hide is stretched by strings attached to the hide and connected to the frame, fastenings for securing the strings to the frame comprising bolts having shanks passed through openings in the frame and slidable therein and heads having drawing engagement with the side of the frame or outward displacement therefrom as the bolts are moved, and means associated with each one of said bolts inside the frame functioning to exert tension thereon for holding the head of the bolt in normal drawing engagement with the side of the frame but with permitted movement of the bolt and outward displacement of the head thereof as aforesaid.

In a hide-stretching device of the type specified having a frame in which the hide is stretched by strings attached to the hide and connected to the frame, fastrnings for securing the strings to the frame comprising bolts having shanks passed through openings the frame or outward displacement there from as the bolts are moved, means associated with each one of said bolts inside the frame functioning to exert tension thereon for holding the head of the bolt in normal drawing engagement with the side of the frame but with permitted movement of the bolt and outward displacement of the head thereof as aforesaid, and means whereby said bolt may be moved and outward displacement of its head obtained as aforesaid by application of pressure to the inner end of the bolt from outside said frame.

In a hide-stretching device of the type specified. having a frame in which the hide is stretched by strings attached to the hide and connected to the frame, fastenings for securing the strings to the frame compristhe side of the frame as aforesaid, and- .means connecting with the inner end of the shank of each bolt whereby the shank may be moved and outward displacement of its head obtained from a point outside but actjacent that side of the frame opposite the side against which the head has normal hearing.

5. In a hide-stretching device of the type specified having a frame in which the hide is stretched by strings attached to the hide and connected to the frame, said frame having spaced openings through it, each of said openings being larger in cross section in the part adjacent one side of the frame than in the part adjacent its opposite side, leaving a shoulder inside the frame between said portions of the opening, bolts having shanks extending into the respective openings in the frame and slidable therein and heads on the shanks having drawing engagement against that side of the frame adjacent that portion of the opening therethrough having the lesser cross section, endpieces having threaded connection with the inner ends of the belts in extension thereof, said endpieces being contained in those portions of said openings having the larger cross section and. extending through and beyond that side of the frame opposite the side against which the heads of the bolts have bearing, and springs arranged upon the shanks of the respective bolts inside the frame, each of the springs being tensionecl between one of the shoulders on the frame and the inner opposing end of the endpiece of the shank on which the spring is arranged.
