DETACHABLE DRAW-BAR AND YOKE CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed January 27, 1917. Serial No. 144,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Goo RIoH Q. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Detachable Draw-Bar and Yoke Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
his invention relates to improvements in detachable draw bar and yoke connections.
The object of the inventionis to provide a simple and inexpensive arrangement for detachably connecting standard draw bars and yoke straps of the riveted type, and wherein I utilize the standardly spaced rivet holes found in said draw bars and yokes.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a part longitudinal section and part side elevation of a draw bar and yoke showing my improvements in cOnnection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken substantially on the line 22 thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a perspective view of one of the improved lug plates emploved with my arrangement, and Fig. 5-is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating a different embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, 10 denotes the butt of a standard draw bar having the usual vertically extending rivet holes 1111 in the top and bottom walls thereof. A yoke strap 12 f usual form is also shown in the the upper and lower arms thereof being also provided at their forward ends with the usual standardlv spaced rivet holes 13-13. wh ch are alined with the rivet holes of the draw bar butt when the two members are properlv assembled.
For detachablv connecting the draw bar and yoke I have provided the following means: A pair of plates 14-14 are emploved preferably of similar construction and each having a pair of inwardly extending relatively short lugs 1515, said lugs being spaced the same distance apart as the distance between the rivet holes of the draw bar butt and yoke, and said lugs 15 are also or by forcing made to correspond in diameter to the diameter of said rivet holes. One of said plates 14 is applied to the bottom of the yoke and draw bar with the lugs 15 penetrating thelower sets of alined rivet holes and the other plate 14 is similarly. applied at the top of the draw bar and yoke. To hold said plates in proper position and at the same time prevent spreading the arms of the yoke strap, a rectangular band 16 is employed which may he slipped over the plates 14 by longitudinal movement. Said band 16 is provided on the top and bottom walls thereof with centrally located forward extensions 17-17, which aline with corresponding extensions 18-18 provided on theplates 14. Said extensions 17 and 18 are perforated to accommodate cotters 19 or other suitable fastening devices whereby the band 16 is held in position and prevented from accidental displacement.
ith the arrangement above described, itis apparent that the band may be applied, after the lug plates have been put'in position. either by forcing the band rearwardly the same forwardlv depending upon the location of the band on either the draw bar or the yoke strap, before it is forced into position. 5
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, the draw bar butt 110 is provided with rivet holes 111 in the same manner as the draw bar butt shown in Fig. 1, but in addition thereto. upwardly and downwardly extending shoulders 20-20 are provided to'thereby form recesses 2121 to receive the inturned flanges or gibs 22-22 in the forward ends of the yoke arms. it beingunderstood that the latter are provided with the standardlv spaced rivet holes. as in the other construction. In this modified form, the lug plates 114 114. in addition to having the same type of lu s for penetrating the rivet holes. are provided at their forward ends with transverselv extending shoulders 2323 which en age the forward edges of the upper and lower walls of the rectangular band 116, thus limiting the forward movement of the latter. In this construction, the rear edges of the band 116 are designed to come flush with the rear wall of the butt so that the usual follower of the draft rigging will engage the rear side edges of the band and prevent the latter from moving inwardly while the parts are in operative position.
I claim:
In means for detachably connecting a draw bar and yoke cated rivet receiving having standardly 10- holes, the combination 5 with independent upper and lower elements, each of said elements having a pair of lugs adapted to penetrate the respective upper and lower sets of rivet holes in the yoke and draw bar, of a single-piece band of substan- 10 tially rectangular engage said element formation arranged to and surround said elements, the draw bar butt and yoke ends to thereby hold said elements in position, and means for limiting the forward movement of said band with respect to said elements. 15 In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22nd day of J an., 1917.
