DRAW-BAR AND YOKII CQNNEC'I'ION.
mama.-
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Galena, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar and Yoke Connections, of which the following is a full,
clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draw bar and yoke connections.
' to, and also due to variations in the original aid manufacture of the draw bars and yoke straps, i? is not always possible to obtain a tight fit when the detachable connections are applied. As is well known, any loose-" ness of the parts in a draw bar and yoke connection is almost certain to be fatal to the successful operation of the construction and rigidity and tightness areessential- The object of my invention is to provide a detachable connection for standard draw bars and yoke straps of the riveted type which connection is so designed as to automatically compensate for variations occurring in the manufacture of the difi'erent parts so as to always insure a tight rigid connection between the draw bar and yoke strap.
In the drawingforming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a drawbar and a yoke strap of standard construction showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. I 2 is a broken top plan view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical,
' sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 3-3thereof.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one of-the blocks employed with my construction.
In said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw bar having the usual upper and lower front shoulders 11 and 12 and upper and Specification or Letters Patent.
lower sets of standardly spaced rivet holes 13- and It. The usual wrought iron U- shaped yoke strap is indicated at A, the upper and lower arms thereof bein provided with the usual standardly space rivet holes 15 and 16, the forward ends of the arms being preferably inturned as indicated at 17-17 to engage the shoulders 11 and 12.
Patented Dec. 3, IWL."
Application an August as, me. bcrialIWo-WLOW. I
My improved detachable connection, as
shown, consists of four headed pins B-B, an upper block G, a two-part band D, wedge blocks EE and bolt F.
The pins B--B are arranged in upper and lower pairs, each of said pins belng long enough to extend through the rivet holes of. the yoke strap and fairly well into the rivet holes of the "draw bar; In addition, each of the pins B is provided witha tapered head 18, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The upper block G is of substantially fiat constructlon and is "provided on' its under side with tapered recesses Iii-19 to fit the tapered or wedge-shaped heads 18 of the pins B.
Each of the blocks E, at the bottom of the draw bar, is substantially of right angle triangle cross section so that the inclined. side, as indicated at 20, is located on the outer side to cooperate with the band, as
hereinafter described, to efi'ect a wedging action. Each of theblocks E is furthermore provided with a half'tapered or conical recess, as indicated at 21 located so as to fit thejheads of the lower set of pins 18, as clearly shown in Fi 3.
The band 'D consists of two elements 22 and 23 which are pivotally, connected at their top as by abolt 24 so that the band can be opened to be fitted over the draw bar and yoke and then clamped together at the bottom by means of tightening bolt F. At their bottom ends, the two elements 22 and 23 of the band are inclined as indicated at 25-25 so as to fit the blocks-E and sufficient clearance is left between the depending members to permit tightening of the bolt F, as will be understood;
As will be'evident, the block is pre vented from movement lengthwise of the yoke by engagement with the headed ends Ion of the pinsB and'the same is also trueof the 7' blocks E. To prevent the band from slip-= ping lengthwise, the blocks F are prefer ably provided with end flanges 27-27 on their outer sides to overlap the inclinedlportions of the band members so that the band cannot slip with respect to the blocks E which in turn are held by the pins B.
With the construction above described, it is evident that variations in the height of the draw bar butt, or in the thickness of the yoke strap or variations in the size of the pins and blocks C and E will be automatically taken care of by the wedging action which is efiected between the upper set of pins B and block G and between the lower et of pins B and block E and between'the blocks E- and D. In this way a snug and tight union of all the parts is insured even though the sizes of the various parts, may vary to a Considerable degree.
I claim: ,7
1. In a deachable draw bar and yoke connection wherein the draw bar and yoke strap have the usual alined rivet receivin the combination with a plurality of e ements adapted to penetrate the alined holes of the draw bar and yoke strap, said elements havig wedge-shaped outer ends, of a band surrounding the draw bar and yoke-strap and said elements, and means co-acting with said wedge-shaped outer ends and said band fol. efiecting a snug connection upon contraction of the band.
2. In a detachable draw bar and yoke strap connection wherein the draw bar and yoke strap have the usual alined rivet re-' ceiving holes, the combination with a plurality of elements adapted to penetrate said alined holes of the draw bar and yoke strap, of a contractible band adapted to holes,
surround the draw bar and yoke and said elements, and wedge-shaped means interposed between said band and said draw bar and yoke strap and cooperable with the band, upon contraction of the latter, to effeet a tight engagement of all the parts.
3. In a detachable draw bar and yoke strap connection wherein the draw bar and yoke strap have the usual alined rivet receiving holes, the combination with upper and lower sets of pins adapted to penetrate said alined holes, said pins having headed ends, of a band comprised of two elements pivotally connected at one end, blocks interposed between the headends of said pins and the upper and lower portions of said band, and means for drawing together the free ends of the parts of said band.
4. In a detachable .draw bar and yoke strap connection wherein the draw bar and yoke strap have alined rivet receiving holes, the combination'with upper and lower sets of pins having wedge-shaped heads, of a block recessed to fit the upper set of pin heads, wedge-shaped blocks recessed to fit the heads of the lower set of pins, a contractible band arranged to surround the draw bar, strap and said blocks, means for contracting the band, and cooperating means on one'of said blocks and the band for preventing longitudinal movement of the band with respect to the draw bar and yoke.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th day of Aug. 1918. l
