YOKE FOR DRAFT-RIGGINGS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STACY B. HAsEL'rINE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yokes for Draft- Biggings, of which the followingisaifull, clear, concise, and exact description, refer.- ence being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in arms, as indicated at 14-14;, the upper arm yokes for draft riggings.
It is customary in railroad practice to employ either a wrought iron. or wrought steel yoke strap riveted to the draw bar .or a cast yoke havinga box or head at the forward end thereof .which is keyed to the draw bar. The riveted type ofyoke' strap is, of
course, objectionable for the reason that it is diflicult of repair and is a constant source of trouble because of the shearing of the rivets. All cast yokes areobjectionable be cause of the difficulty of casting a yoke which is of perfect material throughout. Furthermore, cast steel in the yoke arms is not as good as a tension member as the wrought iron or wrought steel. The object of my invention, broadly, is to provide a yoke which will eliminate the disadvantages of the two general types of yokesnow employed as above mentioned and which will combine the advantages of both.
More specifically, the object ofmy invention is toprovide a detachable yoke for railway draft riggings wherein the loop part of the yoke may be formed from wrought iron or wrought steel and the head may be made as a casting, the head being formed in two parts to provide a secure connection between the head and strap. V
In the drawing forming a part ofthis specification, Figure 1 is a part vertical longitudinal section part side elevation of an improved yoke embodying my invention.

The yoke proper A is of general U shape having upper and lower arms 1111', rear connecting piece 12 and filler block 13. The arms 11 of the strap A, at their forward ends, are offset from the general plane of the being upwardly offset and the lower arm 7 At their forward extreme ends, the arms are provided with inturned gibs, as indicatedat 15-15. It will also be noted that the offsetting of the arms, as at14, provides rearwardly facing shoulders, as indicated at 16-16, on the outer sides of the arms and with which the head B is adapted to cooperate, as. hereinafter explained,
The head B is formed in two parts, indicated most clearly in Fig. 3 at B and B". The outer member B" is of substantially rectangular form in vertical cross-section and has upper and lower walls 17-17 and side walls 18-18. The latter are forwardly extended, as indicated at 19, in Fig.1, and
provided with transversely arranged slots 20 adapted to aline with the key slot of the draw bar. The'inner faces of the side walls 18 are cut away, as indicated at 21-21 in Fig. 3, thecontour of the cut-away portions '21 being indicated by thefull line to which the reference 121 has been applied in Fig. 1. By cutting away the inner faces of the walls 18, as above explained, it is evident that flanges 22 remain which surround the slots 2O, thereby providing ample wearing area for the coupler key. The upper and lower walls 17 of the part B are furnished with transversely extending shoulders 116, which cooperate with'the shoulders 16' formed on the yoke strap.

The. parts are assembledas follows: The ends of the arms of the strap A are snapped over the upper and lower walls 23 of the inner head member B so that the gibs 15 of the strap will engage the front edges of said walls 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Thereafter, the outer head member B is slipped longitudinally of the strap A from the rear thereof until it fits snugly over the ends of the oke strapand is telescoped'over the inhead member B. This condition is illustrated in Fig. l and it is obvious that the parts will be held in assembled relation when a coupler key is introduced through the draw in Figs. 4 and 5,'the yoke strap'A" has the bar and the head.
WVith the arrangement shown, it is evident that the forward ends of the strap are secured snugly between the two elements of the'head B and with a connection that is substantially as strong as could be obtained by employing a permanent attachment. At the same time, the connection has the advantage that the head and strap may be readily separated in the case of repair. Furthermore','by providing the shoulders 116 in the outer head member B", I eliminate a defect that has been present in certain typesof yokes heretofore since this shoulder effectively minimizes the tendency of the offset portion 14: of the strap straightening out under tension. It permits me to bring the main portion of the arms 11 of the strap with their inner surfaces flush with the inner faces of the upper and lower walls of the hood and the top and bottom surfaces of the draw bar butt.
' Referring to the construction illustrated forward ends of the arms thereof offset, as indicated at 114, and the extreme ends formed with a T section, as indicated at 30. The head is formed in two detachable parts, indicated at B and B*. These are telescoped in substantially the same manner as the members B and B", except that the inner member 13 is of the same length,'horizontally, as the outer member B, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. To accommodate the 'T ends 30 of the strap A, the inner member B is provided with slots 31--31 in the upper and lower walls, as most clearly shown in Fig- 5. The parts .are assembled by snapping the Tends 30 of the strap A in place T over the inner member B after which the necessity outer member 13 is slid longitudinally of the strap until the partsare inthe normal position shown in 4. Without the of going into a further detailed description, it will be evident that the structnre shown in Figs. 4 and 5' possesses all detachably united thereto, said arms having offset portions near the ends thereof-and the head comprising two rectangular parts between which "said offset portions are confined when the parts are assembled, one of said parts fitting within and the'other outside of the ends of they yoke arms.
