c. s. PATCH. DETACHABLE CONNECTION FOR STANDARD DRAW BARS AND IYOKES. APPLICATION FILED FEB. {2b-1917.y

vajcitizen' of the Unitedv States,
CHAZY, NEW YORK'.
, DETACHABLE CONNECTION FCR sTANDARij-mmwsansAND Yenes:
Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, residing at Glenellyn', in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have'invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Detachable' Con nections for Standard Draw- Bars and Yokes, of which the followingis a. full, clear, concise, Vandv lexact description, refer# encejbeing had to'the accompanyingdrawings, forming-.a part of this specification.
, jThisfinv'ention relates to improvements in d'etachableconnections for standardV draw bars and yokes; E Y y l The object of the'inv'entionis to provide a detachable connection fordraw bars and yok'e'sl of standard construction wherein arey p provided inl the Vdraw'bar 'buttandyoke straps, the parts utilizedA the usual. Vrivet holes being so arranged that the detachablev connections between the partsare placed 'under double shear.
In the drawing forming part of 'this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of portions of a draw bar and yoke strap, showing my improvements in connection therewith. ig. 2 is a central, vertical longitudinal seotion of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse, vertical sectional Views, taken substantially on the lines 3 3 and 4 4 respectively of Fig. 1. And Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the lu plates employed with my construction.
In said drawing, 10 denotes a draw bar having a butt 11 provided with the usual vupper and lower shoulders 12 and 13 and the usual standardly spaced rivet holes 14-14 l1n the upper and lower walls thereon. The
draw bar is also provided with the usual coupler-key slots 15-15 in the opposite side walls thereof. -The yoke which is employed with the draw bar is or may be of the usual strap form having upper and lower arms 16-16, the latter being also perforated, as indicated at 17, which perforations are in alinement with the holes 14 of the draw bar butt, when the draw bar and yoke are properlv assembled.
The detachable connection proper, as shown, comprises an upper lug plate 18, lower lugplate 19, and detachable side plates 20-20. The lug plate y18 is formed with a pair of vintegral lugs 21-21, which are adapted to extend through the perforations 17 and 14 in the upper yoke arm and upper Specification of Letters Patent. I

erl'y assembled with thedug 'plate 19, they by cotters 30.
maybexheld in position description, it will From the preceding vbe seen that the fourplates 18, 19, and
20-20 form, when assembled, a band which surrounds the draw bar butt arms, and, in conjunction with vthe lugs 21 and 22, serve -to detachablyconnect the draw bar and yoke.
It is desirable that the lugs 21 and 22 be placed under double shear to thus provide double the resistance in preventing separation of the draw bar and yoke. To accomplish this, each of the side plates 20 is provided with extension 31 having on its inner face an integral short semi-key or lug 32 of suitable formation to be swung into and out of the corresponding coupler key slot 15 when the plates 2 0 are in engagement with the plate In this manner it is apparent that the draw bar will pull on the side plates 20 through the semi-keys 32, and theside pla-tes 2Ol in turn will pull upon #the lug plates 18 and 19, thus placing the lugs 2l under double shear.
The parts are shown in the drawing in assembled position, and in order to disconnect lthe draw bar and yoke. the cotters 28 are lirst removed, after which the lower ends ofthe plate 30 are swung outwardly suiiiciently to clear the lug plate 19, where upon the latter may be dropped down. Then an' extension '27- of' lesser and the yoke av forward extension 3l, each'- Q f v'1,286,756
plates having been removed, the lug plate,
18 can be taken off by lifting the same vertically. The parts are assembled by reversing the sequence of the operations just described. w v
I claim:
1. ln a detachable connection for draw bars land bled, the combination with upper and lower members each having inwardly extending lugs adapted to penetrate said holes, of side plates extending betweenA saidl upper and lower members, said yside plates and upper and lowerpplates having integrally formed coperating means r for detachably. uniting said plates and members@V Y 2. In a detachable connection for draw ybars and yokes having alined-holesfwhen l assembled, a four-sided bandarranged to surround the draw. bar butt and yoke, the
-upper and lowermembers of saidbandhav-` ing ,means adapted to 'penetrate said" holes andthe side-members having inwardly sex# tending lugs located so as to engage Vin'slots of the draw bar.v f f 3.V lna devicelof theicharacter described, the combination with a coupler having a.
coupler-key slot and the usual rivet holes y yokes having alined holes when assemin the butt thereof, kof a yoke having the arms thereof provided with holes in alinement with theiholesy of theV coupler butt, upper and lower plates'fitting over the up- 35 per and lower arms ofthe yoke and having vlugs penetratin'githe holes ofthe 'yoke arms and the holes of the draw bar butt, and
. side plates detachably connected to bothof said lug plates, said side plates having also 40 lugs arranged to enter the coupler-key slot.
4. in a device ofthe character described, thecombination with a draw bar having the butt thereof provided with standardly spaced. rivet holes, vof a yoke having the arms thereof provided with holes' alined with lthose of the draw bar butt, an' upper lug plate having lugs penetratingv the upper holes ofthe yoke and draw bar butt, a lower plate having lugs penetrating the lower holes of the draw 'bar butt and yoke, and side plates for detachably connecting the lug plates, each of said sidej plates hav'- ingf a detachabley hook connection with Vthe vupperlug plate and slotted atfits lower end,g
to receive a portion of the lower lug plate.
In witness lthat I claim the fore oing I have hereunto lsubscribedy 'name t -s V31st day ofJan.,1917,.'v a CALVINABKPATCH.
