CARPET-BEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
Application filed January 5, 1914. Serial No. 810,414.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM lVIDMAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Beaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for beating carpets, rugs and the like, and its object is to provide a novel and improved device of this kind which enables a carpet or other floor covering to be beaten without removing the same from the floor.
The invention also has for its object to provide a device of this kind which is easy to operate.
.Vith these stated objects in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which a perspective view of the device is shown.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the beater 5 is carried by an arm 6 having a pivotal connection with a stand, which latter is designed to be mounted on the floor, and by means of an operating handle 7 connected to the arm the latter may be swung up and down to operate the beater. The stand comprises a suitable base 8 from one end of which rise two standards 9 which are connected at the top by a cross-piece 10 carrying a block 11 provided with ears 12 between which the arm 6 is pivoted, as indicated at 13, to swing in a vertical plane. The block is swiveled in the cross-piece 10 to rotate in a horizontal plane. Thus, it will be seen that the beater may be swung up and down and also swung in a circle, enabling the operator to cover a large surface without moving the stand. After the surface within the radius of the beater is beaten, the stand is moved to another position, and so on until the entire carpet has been gone over. The operator may place one foot on the base 8 to hold the stand steady. The outer end of the arm 6 is flattened and curved transversely to form a seat 14 for the handle 15 of the beater 5. A clamping plate 16 is placed on top of the handle. Intermediate the ends of the seat and the plate, at the sides thereof, are ears 1'? having alined perforations to receive bolts 18, which latter, upon being tightened up by nuts 19, draw the plate down on the "beater handle, whereupon said handle is clamped to the arm 6. On top of the plate 15 is lug 20 to which is'pivoted, as indicaied at 21, a socket member 22 carrying the handle 7. The beater 5 is operated by means of the handle '7 in the manner hereinbefore described.
The device is very simple in construction, it can be easily operated and any ordinary carpet beater may be employed.
I claim:
1. The combination of a stand, a vertically swiveled support carried thereby, an arm pivoted to the support to swing in a vertical plane, and a carpet beater and an operating handle carried by the arm.
The combination of a stand, a vertically swiveled support carried thereby, an arm pivoted to the support to swing in a vertical plane, a carpet beater carried by the arm, and an operating handle pivotally connected to the arm.
The combination of a stand comprising a base and standards rising therefrom, said standards being connected at the top by a cross-piece, a vertically swiveled support carried by said cross-piece, an arm pivoted to the support to swing in a vertical plane, and a carpet beater and an operating handle carried by the arm.
a. The combination of a stand, a vertically swiveled support carried thereby, an arm pivoted to the support to swing in a vertical plane, the outer end of the arm having a seat, a clamping plate carried by the arm above the seat, a carpet beater held in the seat by the clamping plate, and a handle connected to the clamping plate.
The combination of a stand, a vertically swiveled support carried thereby, an arm pivoted to the support to swing in a vertical plane, the outer end of the arm having a seat, a clamping plate carried by the arm above the seat, a carpet beater held in the seat by the clamping plate, said clamping plate having a top lug, and a handle socket pivoted to said lug.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
