Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 322 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently faced unexpected charges because auto-renewals took money from accounts well before the scheduled renewal dates. Many people experienced frustrating issues with intrusive pop-up ads and software that proved difficult to completely remove from their computers. Users also discovered that reaching customer service was nearly impossible, leaving them with unhelpful automated chat bots and unanswered emails. Though some reviewers noted that specific support representatives were exceptionally helpful and quick to resolve subscription problems. A small group of consumers also appreciated the reliable antivirus protection and effective security features included in the software.

Unethical Support by Agent Alvaro: Denied 60-Day Refund, Blamed the Customer, and Falsely Closed Ticket as "Resolved"

I am writing this review to publicly expose the shocking lack of ethics and unprofessionalism displayed by McAfee customer support, specifically Agent Alvaro, on September 5, 2026.

McAfee automatically charged an annual renewal to my credit card yesterday without prior clear notice. When I tried to log in to manage my subscription, McAfee's system blocked my access, stating that my password had expired and demanding a one-time passcode (OTP) sent to an old email address (ekdns21cnate.com) that had already been permanently deleted.

I contacted live chat support to resolve this issue and request a full refund under McAfee's official 60-day money-back guarantee policy. Here is what Agent Alvaro did:

1. Circular Demands: Despite being repeatedly told that the registered email was permanently inaccessible, Alvaro refused to offer any alternative verification and kept insisting on details only accessible from inside the locked account (order number, exact product name, expiration date).
2. Victim-Blaming: When I explained that I could not retrieve those numbers without logging in, Alvaro condescendingly blamed me, asking: "If you knew your email was connected to McAfee, why did you delete your email account?"
3. Refusal of Payment Verification: I offered standard billing verification data—including my card approval code, cardholder name, exact timestamp, and card digits—which any legitimate billing department uses. Alvaro completely dismissed it.
4. Falsifying Ticket Resolution: To avoid escalating the case or impacting internal metrics, Alvaro unilaterally terminated the chat at 2:58 PM with the statement: "Since you don't have any more queries, I will record the details and close the conversation considering the issue successfully resolved."

Nothing was resolved. My account remains locked, the unauthorized charge has not been refunded, and the representative simply hung up on a paying customer.

I have retained the full transcript of this entire conversation as concrete evidence and can provide it immediately upon request. I am initiating a formal chargeback dispute through my card issuer (NH Card) and filing a complaint with consumer protection agencies.

I cancelled my subscription to McAfee…

I cancelled my subscription to McAfee more than a year ago. They recently in July 2026 auto renewed my subscription and withdrew $94.94 from my checking account. I had this account listed with an old email address which no longer exists. Called customer service 3 times and no one there could help me. It seems like they want to discourage you from canceling. This company is useless. I had to eat the $94.94. My bank issued me a NEW card so McAfee cannot auto renew anymore in the future. They are a worthless company. The three agents I spoke with barely spoke English. I see a lot of negative reviews with the same issue.

Public Awareness Post

Public Awareness Post: McAfee Auto-Renewal Warning⚠️ CONSUMER ALERT: Check your credit card statements for unexpected McAfee charges, even if your account expired years ago!On July 13, 2026, McAfee automatically charged my credit card $225.99 for a subscription that had officially expired back on July 19, 2023.How did they charge me without my new card details? Banks use a system called "Account Updater Services." This system automatically shares your new card numbers and expiration dates with merchants who have recurring billing on file. Because McAfee leaves your auto-renewal active even after a subscription expires, they can pull money from your brand-new card years later without your explicit consent. If you have ever had a McAfee account, please take these steps immediately to protect your money:Log into your account and manually toggle Auto-Renewal to OFF (just letting the subscription expire or removing your card info visually does NOT stop the billing token).Contact McAfee support immediately if you see a charge; they have a 60-day refund window for automatic renewals.Call your bank or credit card company and explicitly ask them to block/revoke the merchant token for McAfee so they cannot use the automatic updater system against you. Please share this to save your friends and family from a massive, unexpected $225 fee!

Just one huge scam

Just one huge scam! They offer free trial, but if you forget to cancel before the free trial is over you're money is lost. Talk about flushing money down the drain!! And they offer no refunds for changing you're mind. That money back guarantee is one huge scam! Save you're money and buy something you actually need instead!

How this firm has declined over the past eight years is appalling.

McAfee won't unsubscirbe me.

When I purchased my new HP, it came with McAfee which I did not activiate, nor use in any way. When it expired, I unsubscribed to the notices, waited, but was not removed from their mails. I replied and threatened to start writing nasty reviews. To their credit, a McAfee representative contacted me and told me he had removed my information. But, NO, weeks later I am still getting McAfee solicitations every 2-3 days so I will start writing nasty reviews - this is #1.

Constant marketing pop ups. So sick of this

I used an online company to do a broadband speed test and somehow inadvertently clicked on an ad or something from Mcafee. Now I have constant pop ups saying my PC is infected with a virus. I did a scan with Windows Defender and nothing was detected but I just can't get rid of the pop ups. I am so sick of this company, surely Trading Standards or someone can do something about this.

Sneaky Auto-Renewal

Sneaky Auto-renewal! No notification of taking £114 from my bank A MONTH BEFORE MY FREE TRIAL ENDS.

thankfully I had insufficient funds and the transaction failed.

This is a top of the constant spam from McAfee when I’m using my brand new laptop which has plenty of free disk space, despite what McAfee pop ups keep telling me.

Mcafeee used to be professional, but now they’re just bloody pains looking for sneaky financial gains…!!

Now cancelled auto renewal. Very cynical to not notify the payment is going to be taken.

Constant pop ups

Downloaded Mcafee and it has made my laptop unusable with its constant pop ups that will not go away no matter how many times I try to fix my issue. It is awful and I regret wasting my money on it. Nightmare to get rid of

Subscription taken 10 weeks before renewal date

Our auto renewal starts in November, however, McAfee has taken payment from our credit card in August! This is well before the renewal date. I’ve cancelled he subscription today but trying to get back the early charge from our credit card is proving impossible. Online chat just give standard AI answers and they make it so difficult to get to talk to anyone by phone. We will probably have to make a claim through our CC.

MacaFee stealing money from my bank account!

Purchased a new laptop in August 2025 from Curry's. I was talked into purchasing 2 years of MacaFee protection. On checking my bank account this morning I have 2 payments pending totalling £299.98 for a further 2 years protection without any notice from MacaFee. I have spent 2 hours on their websitechatting to 3 unknown persons who took my details several times. I requested a person to person telephone call without success. On checking my account I have another twelve months protection expiring on the 21st September 2027 so why are they taking another 2 years payments from my account! I have cancelled my subscription. On communicating with my bank I have been informed that I am unable to do anything until payment has actually been taken from my account. Shocking company!

doesnt even works

nobody wants this on their pc as standard anti virus + doesn't even protect your pc (even if you pay)
had many counts of unauthorized changes being made to my pc by a program and mcafee didn't detect or stop the program from continuing harm to my pc

Beware of auto-renewal issues!

My account was auto-renewed well ahead of the date. My email went unanswered and then I attempted a chat which was cut off. I later tried another chat and was then transferred to a human who refused to simply let me cancel my subscription and refund me. It was an extremely frustrating situation that lasted almost an hour.

Full screen ads that are intentionally…

Full screen ads that are intentionally misleading and impossible to click out of. Pretty much everyone knows at this point, this company is basically malware itself. I imagine they only way they generate revenue anymore is from those scare tactic ads.

🚨 Avoid at all costs

🚨 Avoid at all costs: Absolute malware disguised as security software!I would give this zero stars if I could. McAfee does the exact opposite of what it promises. Instead of protecting my computer, it acts like a virus itself, aggressively breaking and blocking legitimate, safe programs that I actually need for work and daily use. It causes way more system issues, crashes, and headaches than it could ever prevent. Dealing with its broken detection and constant interference is a nightmare. It ruins your computer's performance and then has the nerve to lock you into a subscription. Save your money and your sanity—do not install this absolute garbage

RENEWED WITHOUT PERMISSION - AVOID

RENEWED WITHOUT PERMISSION - AVOID
Subscription renewed without asking. I don't even have the bank card I used originally but somehow it found the new one even though I never save my card details on any site.

DO NOT Subscribe

DO NOT Subscribe. You can’t cancel the coverage. I put it in place 15 years ago on an old desktop. Just realized I was still being charged an auto renewal fee on a credit card statement. When I called to cancel it they could not because they said I had to give them the email address that I set it up with. They had no other way to pull me up so could not cancel my subscription.
I had to shut down my credit card and have them send me a new one.
