A Dishonest Money Grab: Sapphire is Just a Redesign

As a long-time user of the Rosetta Stone Classic application, I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed with the release of Rosetta Stone Sapphire. After spending some time with this new app, it’s glaringly obvious that it is nothing more than a visual redesign of the exact same content, conveniently labeled as "new" simply to justify charging more.
In the past, Rosetta Stone offered a consumer-friendly model where you could pay once, own the system for life, and learn at your own leisure. Now, they’ve completely abandoned that in favor of forcing monthly and yearly subscriptions. Worse yet, it appears they are no longer going to update the older Classic application, effectively cornering their loyal user base into this new subscription trap. This feels incredibly dishonest, greedy, and genuinely hurtful to the customers who have supported them for years.
To be fair, I will always credit Rosetta Stone for its excellent accent and pronunciation training. I regularly get complimented on my accent when speaking Polish, and that is highly due to the way this system teaches you to speak. They do that specific part incredibly well.
However, that one positive feature does not justify a predatory subscription model for recycled content. We live in an era where you can use AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to act as excellent, interactive language tutors—often going above and beyond what Rosetta Stone offers—for a fraction of the cost or even for free.
Ultimately, Rosetta Stone Sapphire feels less like a step forward in language learning and more like a calculated money grab. Unless you desperately need their specific pronunciation tools, I cannot recommend supporting these anti-consumer practices.

Lack of support for their products

I bought a French language course on CDs a few years ago and registered it, my property? No, when I replace laptops later and don't have a confirmation code the CDs no longer load and Rosetta Stone are not interested - no online support or phone support they just want to sell expensive online subscriptions. It includes a lifetime subscription but how long is that going to be supported?

⚠️ BUYER BEWARE

⚠️ BUYER BEWARE: The Rosetta Stone "Lifetime" Membership Trap
If you are thinking of buying a Rosetta Stone "Lifetime" membership, read this first. They are using a predatory loophole to strip paying customers of access.
October 2025: My 80-year-old parents bought me a "Lifetime Membership" as a birthday gift during a promotional campaign.
April 2026: Just six months later, Rosetta Stone rolls out their new flagship software featuring AI upgrades.
The Trap: They locked legacy lifetime users out of the new platform. Their defense? They claim the new app is a "completely separate product offering."
The Double-Talk: To existing users, they say it’s a "separate product." But in their active public marketing, they explicitly boast it is "the same old Rosetta Stone you've always known and loved, but now with AI."
They dropped prices on a "Lifetime" deal just to liquidate memberships for a legacy platform they knew they were actively planning to sunset. When challenged, their customer service manager officially refused a refund, refused a migration path, and threatened to block further communication.
Don't let your parents or loved ones waste their money on a "lifetime" promise that expires in 180 days.

I used to use Rosetta Stone when it was…

I used to use Rosetta Stone when it was like an offline software platform. After being an online version, the way of practice of the platform is not as useful as before. Plus, the pricing is higher than expected. It could have had a more reasonable price.

decent, but with many problems

its alright for learning language (for me, russian), but there are many problems with it: it throws stuff at me that it seems to think i know the answer to, even though i dont, the audio detection is very weak (could be my mic though), the images dont tell me much context, and i struggle with trying to figure out the words i am supposed to say in russian, and it doesnt help with it.

I bought a very expensive lifetime…

I bought a very expensive lifetime membership 10 years ago. I haven't used it much, but I went to try it recently and all but the first level was locked and I was on level 11 last time I used it. It was downloaded on to my computer. I wrote the company and they were so rude and said they never guaranteed it for life. That must have been in small print somehow. They also said that it was because the technology wasn't supported anymore. I said that doesn't make sense since I am able to use the first lesson just fine. It's showing that the other levels are just locked. They wrote back and said they consider this issue closed and they won't respond anymore. I'm so angry. What a sham of a company.

This is crusty and dusty

This is crusty and dusty, everything feels like it hasn't been updated in 20 years. photos are old flip phones even the terms aren't updated using traveler's cheques, radios and other terms that feels stale, what is everyone paying for when the interface is stale and decades out of place for conversation.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone , you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself!!

Anyone who's thinking about Rosetta Stone should think about their future subscriptions and the tech that will be coming up and used in the future which will nullify anything you will have purchased up to this point.

I received a product as a gift in 2017 that I am no longer able to access. And when I switched to the app everything that had been paid for was no longer accessible and was "locked" and only accessible if I repaid for it.

It took two attempts of emails reaching out to Rosetta Stone to even get a response back with an offer that I thought was acceptable. It was a lifetime membership offered to me at a significantly discounted rate.

However, upon acting on the offer I was told by a woman named Liz that she was unable to help me. She could not give me the lifetime offer. FIRST, because they no longer sold it and SECONDLY, because She stated that there was an expiration date on that offer.

There was NO expiration date listed anywhere on the email letter that I received from David (the original customer support person) that indicated I had less than a month to act upon it.

When I asked if there was something else that could be offered, I was told, "no".

I was told I could try the new product at the full price.

I asked if the original subscription from 2017 could be refunded to the purchaser, I was told, "no."

Not once did she offer to elevate the call to a supervisor.

Her only response was, "I'm sorry that I cannot do this at this time."

I asked if I could speak with David and she told me she could not offer help with that either.

So not only can they NOT refund the person who purchased the gift because it has been past 30 days (obviously) they also cannot give me access to the rest of my lessons and they cannot offer me anything that is comparable to giving me said lessons so I'm out of gift.

So if you are looking into Rosetta Stone for educational purposes or personal purposes I highly suggest you look somewhere else because they have no policies in place that will accommodate for their apparently rapid growth and use of AI and internet. It would be a waste of your money.

Overall Useful, But Needs More Updates

Quite an old app~! Been using it since I was in college. Pros: It has a very clear & structured training for all modules of language (phonetics/grammar/sentence framing/vocabulary/listening/speaking), and so far I haven't encountered any false info. Cons: The topics are too simple. I mean, they're useful, but by finishing learning every topic, I still cannot express myself well in difficult topics. Basically I think it aligns with B1 high level? Just a personal experience. Hope it helps.

Paid for CD + Online Access – Now Locked Out with No Accommodation

I was a Rosetta Stone customer many years and purchased multiple language programs as one-time (Lifetime) purchases. These included not only CD-based versions, but also online access tied to Rosetta Stone’s platform.

Because part of what I paid for involved online access through their servers, I reasonably expected that access would continue as their technology evolved—or at minimum that legacy customers would be transitioned to updated systems.

Recently, I attempted to access my purchased programs and found that they are no longer usable. After contacting Rosetta Stone support, I was told that these products have been discontinued and are no longer supported, and that the only way to continue using the same content is to purchase a new subscription.

I understand that technology changes over time. However, what I found most disappointing was that no effort was made to accommodate long-time customers who had already paid for online access. I requested either restoration of access or a discounted upgrade, but after escalation to a manager, I was told no accommodation was available and that I would need to repurchase everything.

What concerns me most is the use of terms like “lifetime” or long-term access, which create a reasonable expectation of continued usability. In practice, access can be completely lost due to platform changes, leaving customers with no practical way to use what they originally paid for.

After experiencing this, I researched further and found that other customers have reported similar issues, suggesting this is not an isolated case.

The product itself was useful when I originally purchased it, but the way legacy customers have been handled—and effectively shut out—was very disappointing. I will never purchase anything from Rosetta Stone again.

Recommendations for Rosetta Stone

This software could be made much better. For one thing, it should allow the user to set the pace of each screen and not advance to the next screen until the user has had the time they need to read/comprehend/process the information that has been shared. After each question, there is a half second before the foreign phrase disappears and I have no time to process the words. Also, I have to keep a translational website open on the side to be able to see /look up what the words are so that I can learn the meaning of the words. And for languages that have a lot of different words with similar meaning, but based on sex, plural/singular, etc... it doesn't exemplify well when to use which word, i.e. it doesn't teach. It just shows the same images again and again and you have to figure out through repetition, and you could be getting it wrong for a long time before you finally realize you were doing it wrong. It could be made much better. They have no direct place to provide constructive criticism, so here I am on Trustpilot...

Bad for actually learning.

I've tried my hardest, but it's just a very unhelpful learning tool. It teaches you nothing in regards to grammar, and yet expects you to know it anyway. You can learn basic words through it, but I can't form a complete sentence. In addition, the "Milestone" test glitches out for me nearly every time I try to do one, and the "review" sections are terrible. You can't fix a single mistake without having to go back through and redo the entire thing.

This is not an app that will work for…

This is not an app that will work for adults or really anyone who wants to learn a language. I bought it so that I could learn Japanese and it's completely useless. It's entirely based on immersion and honestly, even though I'm very talented linguistically, it's an impossible app to actually learn with. Total waste of money. Any language that utilizes a different writing system is not something that you can use through immersion. You can't learn this way. Arabic would be the same story. Hebrew is the same also. I cannot understand why this company has any good reviews at all unless people reviewing it have no experience with language at all.
