The software is usefull
but the UI is messy and no sense.

PRTG Network Monitor is without doubt a powerful tool which has been built up over a long time and that is both its strength and its weakness. Its principals of operation and configuration are quite intuitive once you familiarise yourself with its paradigms. It has a good selection of sensors which you can assign to a device, which can be grouped, which can be located on the core server, or on any remote probe, etc. It is all very logical and fairly straightforward.

You can add individual devices with individual IP's where appropriate, or you can add a range of IP's. You can autoscan, or you can add manually. You can choose sensor templates, or you can add them individually. You can use inheritance from the Device tree, or you can exclude them. The setup worked well for how I like to organise information up to a point.

Where it breaks down is in the details. While it has a nice device tree for just one server, once you add remote probes to your environment, those are placed at the top level of the device tree. This means if you have installed remote probes to get even just CPU load information, that server sits at the same level as your group for Global Network Infrastructure and Site1, Site2, etc. You simply cannot move remote probes to their appropriate group, which is an inexplicably poor design choice. The Map Designer can be used to produce some useful dashboards, but you run into the limitations very quickly. It has some very useful elements like the sunburst diagram which gives you an instant holistic picture of your network state. You can also add your "groups" and see the Good, Warning, Bad states at a glance. That's where it works really well.

However, once you get past that and want to create, you know, an actual Map of your site with individual points, or something like that, you realise it is impossible. The elements cannot be scaled, the sensor displays cannot be changed, the font size cannot be changed, you cannot add Remote Probes as Map elements and so on and so on. It is very limiting and almost unforgivable in a product of this price and with this much time to develop. I personally wrote in my spare time a javascript mapping system based on an Access database almost 20 years ago which had these capabilities with precise x,y coords, layers and drag and drop. It is 2026, this is an expensive commercial product and it is poor that PRTG have left it in this state - in my opinion - when a single capable developer could roll out many such improvements ina few months, let alone a paid development team.

Another example of the development being stuck in time, is when you want to monitor something like printers with the idea of keeping an eye on consumables and error states. PRTG is capable of this, you can add the SNMP Printer sensor and it starts pulling in the SNMP data values - you can see them when you click into the SNMP sensor. But now you want to present that, however you can't add individual SNMP channels to your Map/Dashboard. There is no Map element related to printers, or anything like that. So if you drop the printer device on your Map, you will see only the number of sensors and a state - you cannot see the individual values. You cannot select the element and choose how you want to present, or what you want to present. You also can't add individual channels to a table or anything like that. What you can do, is rename the SNMP Sensor from the very apt and sensible default "SNMP Printer" to the name of the device, or IP or whatever title you want to give it and then drag THAT onto your Map and get a block display of teh channel values with the correct device name. I suppose at least there is a workaround, but that's what it is. The inherent limitations seem a bit unnecessary in the age of AI code vibing.

It feels like a product that has a lot of strengths, which was built to monitor only a single site, but is pitched as an enterprise level network monitor. It is certainly capable of that in terms of scale, but it is not set up for it in terms of structure and it feels like the company is content with the subscription payments they receive from businesses for a product built more than a decade ago and has no real incentive to improve the product further outside publishing the odd sensor pack.

So overall I rate the product as OK - it does what it does, but is lack lustre in many ways.

Easy to use and setup. customer service has been great.

Licensing prices have gone thru the roof for a product that really does not match value for the price we're paying.
Even after a generous discount, we're 200% up on license cost.

SMB. Used Free PRTG (<100 sensors) since PRTG came on market (a looong time ago). It has always worked as configured and expected. It is fantastically flexible and is used fully at two geographically separated locations (a pro music recording studio and a mixing / mastering suite). I have never seen any other application like it for the same very low price ;-)

Great tool, flawless operation with plenty of sensors that surely will satisfy your infra monitoring requirements.

PRTG used to be a solid choice, but the skyrocketing licence prices and the move to a subscription model are a sad joke. You end up paying a lot more money for zero real improvements. The GUI still feels stuck in the 90s, and on mobile devices, it’s practically unreadable – the app is basically unusable. Customisation is poor, and the map/graph designer is clunky at best. The only positive thing I can say is: it works… sometimes.
