ZERO STARS if I could.

ZERO STARS if I could.

Absolutely horrible experience with Europcar/Fox

13 people ahead of me, ONE employee working, and over an hour just to get my car. I paid for a specialty SUV advertised as a Range Rover, Audi, Land Rover, etc. and was handed a Toyota RAV4 with a huge burn in the carpet.

Then the fuel door wouldn’t open—apparently a common problem judging by the damage and key marks around it—yet I was still charged for fuel.

The garage staff were rude, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. Management’s response? A $10 credit toward a future rental. After this experience, there is absolutely no chance I would ever rent from them again.

Misleading advertising. Terrible customer service. Substandard vehicle. Questionable charges. Zero accountability.

DO NOT RENT FROM EUROPCAR OR FOX. Save yourself the headache.

Europcar Dubrovnik: My belongings disappeared before my rental period had even ended — I expect full reimbursement

I am extremely disappointed with the way Europcar at Dubrovnik Airport handled my personal belongings after I returned my rental car early.
My booking was valid until 9:00 AM the following morning, but I chose to return the vehicle early, at approximately 8:00 PM the previous evening at Dubrovnik Airport.
At approximately 7:00 AM the next morning — while my rental period was STILL valid and two hours before the scheduled end of my booking — I contacted Europcar Dubrovnik to inform them that I had accidentally left several personal belongings in the boot.
These included a Calvin Klein jacket, a Michael Kors jacket, sandals, flip-flops and other personal items.
I immediately asked them to locate and keep the belongings because I was still in Croatia and could collect them.
I was told that if the items had been left loose inside the vehicle, the car wash staff had probably thrown them away. I was subsequently told that nothing had been found and that at the car wash they “usually throw it away.”
I find this completely unacceptable.
These were clearly personal belongings, including two valuable branded jackets. They were not rubbish and should never have been treated as such.
More importantly, I notified Europcar Dubrovnik before my original rental period had even ended. Had I simply kept the vehicle until the contracted return time of 9:00 AM, these belongings would presumably still have been in my possession.
I cannot confirm what ultimately happened to the items. Whether they were discarded, misplaced or otherwise disappeared after the vehicle was returned, Europcar has been unable to account for them. Considering that some of the missing belongings were valuable branded clothing, this is particularly concerning.
I am formally requesting FULL REIMBURSEMENT for the value of all personal belongings that were lost or disposed of after I returned the vehicle. An apology is not sufficient. I expect Europcar to take responsibility for what happened and compensate me for the full value of the missing items.
I have retained the SMS conversation as evidence, including the time at which I notified Europcar Dubrovnik and their responses stating that the belongings were probably thrown away and that the car wash “usually” does this.
I returned the vehicle early in good faith. I should not be financially penalised for returning a rental car early. At the time I reported the belongings missing, I could legally have still had the vehicle — and my belongings — until 9:00 AM.
I expect Europcar Dubrovnik Airport to investigate exactly what happened to my belongings, provide a proper explanation and reimburse me for their full value.
Until Europcar takes responsibility and provides appropriate compensation, I cannot recommend Europcar Dubrovnik and would not rent from this location again.

terrible experience with a child

I had a terrible experience picking up my rental. I arrived at 10:00 PM, exhausted, only to be told they were completely out of child seats—even though I had reserved one in advance. How can a rental company expect a parent to drive a vehicle without a legally required safety seat? A car is useless to a family without it. Being left stranded late at night with a child due to their inability to manage basic reservations is completely unacceptable. I highly recommend families look elsewhere.

**Extremely disappointing experience

**Extremely disappointing experience — unexpected charges and no explanation**

I booked my car hire through Auto Europe and paid **£172.48** for the rental. When I arrived at the airport, I explained my plans, including that I would be crossing the border. I was then told that I did not have adequate insurance for this and was charged an additional **€850.37** for insurance.

At that point, having already travelled to the airport and needing the car, I felt I had very little choice but to pay the additional amount.

What is even more concerning is that **the following day, three additional transactions totalling £766.55 were taken from my account**. I received no notification, no explanation and no breakdown of what these charges were for.

I have contacted the company to ask for a full explanation and an itemised breakdown of these charges. I have also had to contact my bank to flag the transactions as potentially unauthorised.

I find this completely unacceptable. If additional charges are going to be taken from a customer's account, there should be clear communication explaining exactly what they are for and why they are being charged.

I would strongly recommend checking your account carefully after hiring from this company and making sure you understand **all potential additional charges** before handing over your payment details.

I am still waiting for a satisfactory explanation of the **£766.55 in additional transactions** and why they were taken without any notification.

BUYER BEWARE!!!!

Below is the letter I sent trying to get this sorted out. Europcar has stopped responding and refuses to tell me what supposed upgrade I was given that quadrupled the cost of my rental.

Hello,
We reserved a Kia Sportage (or similar) to be picked up at the Edinburgh New Town location on June 25, 2026 ($250.46).  When we arrived we were told to come back later and our car would be ready.  When we were finally assigned our car, it was an 8 seater van. When we told the agent, Harry, that we could not drive such a large vehicle he shouted at us in front of other customers (he also shouted at the customers before us). When I told him we reserved an SUV he insisted that Europcar was allowed to give us a similar class of vehicle (as opposed to a similar vehicle). He berated us for not making reservations earlier and told us it was our fault that we didn't reserve weeks in advance.  I explained that we had a reservation and he said he would just cancel and we should go elsewhere! I called Auto Europe who asked to speak with Harry.  Harry told them that he was giving us a free upgrade and wasn't even going to charge us for it...  Auto Europe immediately refunded our reservation due to "fleet failure" and apologized for the treatment we received.  I got online and found another rental through Europcar/Keddy at the Edinburgh Airport for $279.10 with a deposit of $925.00  (confirmation # 1204047858). We paid for transportation out to the airport, hauled our luggage around in the heat and finally got to the Europcar rental location where we met our agent, Jerry.  Jerry was very nice and told us that he had a car but that my new reservation had an incorrect pickup date.  He said he could change the reservation on his end, adding 2 days (changed from Jun 27 to Jun 25 with a dropoff of July 9, 2026. We were given a compact SUV (a Skoda Kamiq) . By this time, we were very stressed but grateful to finally have a car.  We signed the contract only to realize when we got our credit card bill that the price increased from $279.10 to $1553.46!!!! The only change to the reservation was 2 extra days and we accepted the fuel tank option for GBP 81.41 .  The contract also shows an upgrade for GBP 699.72 which we did not have, and roadside assistance for GBP 153.94 which we also did not have.  If you look at all of our previous rentals through Europcar, you will see that we never add on extras, although we did do the fuel option this time.  I'm requesting that the upgrade fee and the roadside assistance fee (GBP 699.72 + 153.94=GBP 853.66) that we didn't have be refunded.
Thank you.

Very Disappointing Rental Experience

Very Disappointing Rental Experience – July 16, 2026

I normally do not take the time to leave negative reviews, but my experience on July 16, 2026, was extremely disappointing from beginning to end.

I arrived at approximately 9:15 AM for my 10:00 AM reservation and finally left at 11:30 am. There was one employee handling my reservation, and it took approximately one hour just to complete my check-in and provide me with the keys, while another employee was assisting customers in approximately 5–10 minutes.

When I finally received the keys, I was not told which car was assigned to me, where it was located, its color, or even the type of vehicle. I was not even told that the vehicle I had originally reserved was not available and that they had changed the vehicle type. The employee had to walk me to the car because I had no information about it.

Because the process took so long, I also missed an appointment I had scheduled for 11:00 AM.

Then, before leaving, I discovered that the keys I had been given were not even for the vehicle. I had to return to the counter and get the correct keys.

Once I finally had the correct vehicle, I discovered that it had almost no gas—the fuel gauge showed only one line. I immediately returned and showed the employee a picture of the fuel gauge.

He then changed the vehicle very quickly. This was confusing because if it took an hour to process my original reservation, how he changed to another vehicle available so quickly when I reported the fuel issue?

Unfortunately, the replacement vehicle was damaged/crashed, dirty, and had interior features that did not work properly. I asked to return to the first vehicle if it could be provided with an adequate amount of fuel, but I was told that they could not change it back. I then asked for another vehicle and was told there were no other vehicles available.

At that point, I had no choice but to spend my entire vacation with a damaged, dirty vehicle with things inside that were not functioning properly.

I later contacted the company and sent an email explaining everything that happened, including pictures as evidence of the vehicle’s condition. Unfortunately, the response was essentially nothing. No apology. No explanation. No compensation. No meaningful attempt to address the situation. The only thing they did was return the security deposit that is part of the reservation agreement once you return the vehicle.

Ignoring my email does not resolve the poor service or the inconvenience I experienced.

What was even more concerning was that when I returned the vehicle, I spoke with another couple who asked about my experience. After I explained what happened, they told me they had experienced similar problems—and their situation was even worse because the long wait caused them to miss their flight.

Based on my experience and that conversation, this does not appear to be an isolated incident.

I understand that unexpected situations can happen with rental vehicles, but what I find unacceptable is the lack of communication, the excessive wait time, the incorrect keys, the lack of fuel, the condition of the replacement vehicle, and especially the company’s lack of response after I provided photographic evidence.

I am sharing my experience so future customers can make an informed decision before renting from this company. I expected a basic level of professionalism and customer service, and unfortunately, that was not my experience.

Extremely disappointing experience: unsuitable vehicle, ineffective support and negligible compensation

We booked a rental in the United States for around 20 days through Europcar, selecting a Jeep Compass CFAR or similar – Compact SUV.
At pickup, however, Europcar’s local partner FOX provided us with a 2024 Nissan Kicks S FWD, a significantly smaller vehicle which, in our view, was not genuinely comparable to the reference vehicle used by Europcar for the category we had purchased.
The experience at the pickup desk was already very negative: the employee was rude and unhelpful, focusing mainly on selling additional services. Among these, we were charged USD 149.80 for Roadside Assistance, despite roadside assistance already being included in the Europcar booking we had purchased and paid for.
The most serious issue, however, was the vehicle itself. During the trip, we encountered and documented heavily worn and mismatched tires, deteriorated and ineffective windshield wipers, poor highway stability and inadequate air conditioning. During heavy rain, we experienced serious visibility problems and felt the rear of the vehicle lose stability. Our safety was at risk.
We repeatedly reported the situation to both FOX and Europcar, by email and by phone, from the very first days of the rental. Despite this, we did not receive any effective and timely solution.
As a result, we had to reduce our driving speed, modify parts of our itinerary, give up some planned activities and spend a considerable amount of our vacation dealing with phone calls, emails and repeated attempts to obtain assistance. A rental car should allow you to enjoy your trip, not become a constant source of concern.
We subsequently prepared and sent FOX and Europcar a detailed complaint dossier including photographs, videos, a chronology of our reports and a comparison between the vehicle booked and the one actually supplied.
FOX eventually recognised approximately USD 230, but expressly clarified that USD 149.80 was simply the reimbursement of the Roadside Assistance charge that had been duplicated. The actual compensation offered for all the problems, lost time and impact on our vacation was therefore only USD 80 – just over 10% of the total rental cost.
We then asked Europcar Italy to review the case directly, considering that we had purchased the service through Europcar and not directly from FOX. Their response was essentially that FOX had already handled the case and that Europcar would take no further action.
This is probably the aspect that disappointed us the most: we purchased the service from Europcar and expected Europcar to take full commercial responsibility for the experience sold through its own channel, rather than simply referring us back to the decision of its local partner.
We would never have complained about a normal travel inconvenience. In this case, however, we are talking about a vehicle substantially different from what we expected, issues that we considered significant from a safety perspective, repeated reports, lost time and concrete changes to our vacation plans.
After this experience, our trust in the Europcar brand has been seriously damaged. We are very unlikely to use Europcar again and equally unlikely to recommend it to friends, colleagues or for future group travel arrangements.
An actual compensation of only USD 80 for everything that happened is, in our view, simply inadequate.
Unfortunately, Trustpilot does not allow us to give less than one star.

Warning: False Damage Claims and Unfair €91.50 Charges Unfair €91.50 Fee & Zero Customer Support — Europcar Slovenia

I am extremely disappointed with Europcar Slovenia. I have over 40 years of driving experience and have rented cars all over the world — including a smooth one-week rental with ATET at Ljubljana Airport. However, my experience with Europcar was completely unacceptable. After rental agreement No. A-LJRS-69012770, they charged me an unjustified fee of €91.50 for alleged "damage" to the right side mirror. I subsequently rented the EXACT SAME vehicle for a route from Portorož to Ljubljana Airport, inspected the mirror myself, and found absolutely no scratches — only surface dust! The car was handed over dirty on both rentals. Furthermore, the car was returned after hours, so the inspection was done unilaterally without my presence. I sent multiple emails to customer support and headquarters asking not to charge me while we review the issue, but they completely ignored my emails and charged the card anyway. Charging customers for non-existent damage on an unwashed car and ignoring dispute emails is completely unfair. I have full photo and video proof, I demand an immediate refund of the wrongfully charged €91.50, and I will be publishing this experience across social media and public platforms if this is not resolved.

SHAME ON YOU EUROPCAR UK

I rented a car in Europcar in Rennes, France and filled the gas tank before I left the car.

The Rennes office decided they could squeeze in a bit more gas to the rim and used my credit card to charge me for this extra gas even though I tried to show a screen shot of the full tank of gas.

I returned to my home town in Spain and contacted Europcar España and they said they could do nothing because this happened un France.

I wrote a bad review in Trustpilot and EUROPCAR UK CONTACTED ME SAYING TO WRITE TO THEM SO THEY COULD HELP ME…. 3 EMAILS LATER AND NO RESPONSE!

Shame on you EUROPCAR UK for false caring and not responding. What terrible customer service!!

And shame on EUROPCAR FRANCE IN RENNES for scaming customer’s credit cards to illicitly filling gas tanks to the brim on OUR MONEY!

And please EUROPCAR UK, if you really wish to help and do the right thing, DO NOT ANSWER THIS COMPLAINT TELLING ME TO CONTACTBYOU BECAUSE YOU DON’T ANSWER.

If I could give zero stars

If I could give zero stars, I would. I rented a vehicle at Europcar Jamaica inside of Sangster Airport. My booking was made online through Expedia for 11 days. Once I reached Jamaica there was a long wait to reach the counter. I was informed that Europcar doesn’t accept online bookings and that my reservation would not be honored. This car was already paid for. The woman at the counter was very uncaring. I stepped out of line and searched online for availability within the airport or nearby. It was a busy time and no availability elsewhere. I then got back into the long line to attempt to rent a vehicle. I initially reserved a SUV because of my bad back and the poor road conditions. I was told that vehicle wasn’t available and was forced to rent a Toyota Yaris. The agent pretended to be helpful and concerned once she saw that I would be renting a vehicle. The rental of the smaller vehicle was more than the SUV I had reserved online plus a $400 USD deposit. I spent an additional $835 USD on a vehicle even though I had booked and paid online already. Expedia was contacted once I returned home. I forgot about the issue with everything that’s got on with my health. Once I reached out to Expedia again, they stated that Europcar stated that my online reservation was honored and the extra money was for insurance and other fees. Liars and thieves! I provided the new contract and receipts to Expedia for comparison to my online booking. Still, they did nothing. I will never use Expedia or Europcar again. It’s very discouraging. What if a person comes to pick up a reservation and has no extra funds? Behavior such as this could leave someone stranded. It discourages me from traveling. And definitely makes me weary of renting vehicles. This was my first and last time using Europcar. I typically use Alamo while in Jamaica but fir some reason their company wasn’t showing up on Expedia. I now have their business card. Shame on Europcar and Expedia!

Dysfunctional car and customer service

The car that I rented was dysfunctional. The engine of the car failed twice in less than 24 hours. Once I remained stuck for about 1 hour in a supermarket underground parking. The second time the car failed to start when I was rushing to return the car and get a train. As I could not risk turning off the car for doing gasoline, Europecar staff told me not to worry about the payment of the gasoline. I was, instead, charged for the price of gasoline.
In short, the service that I had was deeply disappointing (dysfunctional car) and Europecar team not only did not solve the problem but even failed to keep its word. I really do not recommend Europecar to anyone: the typical case of a huge multinationational company not caring about customer's interests.

STAY AWAY FROM EUROPCAR PODGORICA.

STAY AWAY FROM EUROPCAR PODGORICA.

At return, they suddenly inspected underneath the car and blamed us for underside damage. How many customers before us have already been forced to pay for this exact same "damage"?

They left us zero choice on the spot: pay €500 immediately or leave without solving it. They refused to deduct it from the deposit, claiming "customer service would handle it."

What a joke. I sent over 10 emails. Customer service ignored every single message about the unfair charge. Yet, the moment I asked a basic question about the deposit, they replied instantly.

They don't just scam you at the desk; they completely ghost you afterward, leaving you 0.0 chance to dispute anything. Absolute worst customer service.

Scammer practices.

Inflated recharge costs - 5 times what staff indicated

The staff at Edinburgh Airport have always been friendly and helpful, but on my last hire I was given incorrect information regarding the recharging cost of the electric vehicle. I verified the recharging cost with both the staff at pick-up and at return - but when the invoice was emailed, the charge was (a) for a recharge in kWh greater than the car could have required to get back to 80%, and (b) at more than FIVE times the previously stated cost per kWh.
Attempts to get this resolved by emailing customer services were ignored, and phone calls resulted in a promise to get a manager at the Edinburgh Airport branch to call me back, which never happened.
Nice folk, but if I can't trust what they are telling me on the cost, then how can I possibly hire from them again?

This company is a very big SCAM!!

This company is a very big SCAM!!! Stay away at all costs!!! I had an extremely unpleasant experience with Europe Car in Mallorca airport. They tried to give me a more expensive car than the one I reserved. The front desk worker was very insistent, also insisting that I make an insurance with them. Since I refused, they made sure they would rip me off in another way. They discovered a minuscule dent in the inside of the door (even though their policy tolerates imperfecties up to 2cm in size, and this was well under) and they kept my entire deposit. I had the imperfection recorded on a video, that I made when I picked up the car, which I did not share with them initially as it was not easy to spot. The person responsible for inspecting the car when I returned it went straight to the dent ("by chance") and pointed it out. I showed her it was in the video, but she said it could be tricked and the date of the file falsified, so she deemed it to be inconclusive evidence. They don't even bother to look at the evidence you provide. I looked closely at other people's cars (same model) and they had a similar dent in the same place "by chance". This lead me to think that the company "prepares" cars with these hard to notice damages in order to rip people off and keep their deposits. The inspector said I need to make a complaint at the front desk. By the time the front desk agent came to inspect the car with me, the car was "by chance" not in the parking lot anymore, and not to be found as it was already sent for washing. This is a massive scam. They don't even bother to take your complain into account (Especially since they know you are short on time in the airport, and risk losing your flight if you need to stay for longer and defend your case). As I would not want similar things happen to other people, I want to warn everyone of how dangerously sneaky, scamish and corrupt this company is.

File this review under "hidden charges". I've used Europcar before and never had an issue. When I reserved a car online there was no mention of any additional fees, let alone "roadside service". In the email confirmation? Not mentioned there either. When I picked up the car it was there, in the small print that no one reads... and they refuse to refund me the 155 euros. SCAM

SCAM: Europcar Rome lied to me, telling me that getting petrol around Rome was expensive and they could fill it up at return on a flat rate of euros 70.-, and I would get reimbursed for the petrol not used.
When I asked the check-in man if the tank would be returned nearly full, would they re-imburse the difference, he assured me that Europcar would only charge the petrol I used and made me sign a document.
SCAM SCAM SCAM - be careful!
Europcar WILL keep your money no matter how full the tank is on return.
AVOID or be extremely cautions on what they tell you. They are trained to deceit the client and make you sign a paper very quickly. Highly skilled charlatans.
