What

Amends spec 18 (NET) so the close-out slices of #1437 can be planned against it, and binds the host-exposure design from gominimal/arch#110 (design v0.9.2 §7.1, landed in gominimal/arch#155). Every change is functional. No requirement quotes printed text. The exact wording goes in the task and the test that pins it.

First slice: on macOS, a box opens at its name and through the hostname proxy, and an activation whose declared port cannot be published is refused (NET-010, NET-016, NET-123, NET-144).

New requirements (relative to main)

ID Behaviour
NET-144 refuse an activation whose declared ingress port is held, naming the port and the holder
NET-145 min net expose --public on a host with no public exposure refuses plainly and publishes nothing
NET-148 an error that ends an attach is printed after the terminal is restored
NET-150, NET-151, NET-154 the hostname proxy also serves its preferred port once it frees; min ls lists every proxy port; a substitute port is logged as a warning
NET-152 min ls lists boxes on a stopped VM, marked stopped
NET-156 on a VM-backed host, flows to the host-gateway alias outside its openings are refused
NET-157 an own-address box's egress refusal is logged on the host, outside the VM
NET-158 only the node-plane identity reaches the node-plane baseline set at the alias
NET-159 (+ sub) host exposures come from the [host-exposures] table in the client's config.toml, tcp by default; a project file's section is ignored with a warning
NET-160 (+ sub) a box reaches an exposure only when its allow_dns_hosts names host.min.internal (or allow_subnets covers the alias), on a VM-backed host or for an own-address box; a native host-address box's network view says the table does not apply
NET-161 (+ sub) each flow is decided by the current 8000 table; a removed exposure ends its established flows
NET-162 (+ sub) an entry on a port that one of Minimal's own listeners holds is refused at load, and an entry that such a listener binds later is shadowed and logged
NET-163 (+ sub) a box's allow_dns_hosts naming another box's name admits that box under its ingress; a parallel instance <name>-<n> is not covered

Changed:

  • NET-058: the host-side commands that take a box name resolve its VM, in BCLI's spellings, with one VM as with several. An unknown box names --vm. A box on a stopped VM names the start command.
  • NET-069: "has not published" replaces "did not declare", so runtime-published ports pass parity.
  • NET-020: what the line conveys, without a quoted string.
  • NET-138's host-address mirror: split into box binds admitted and the node's own listeners never mirrored.
  • The arch pin moves to 8640f85 (design v0.9.2).

The HIGH open question on what configures a host exposure is closed by NET-159 to NET-162.

Checks

  • spec-lint: 0 findings.
  • spec-lint --repo-root .: 17 findings, all P004 (test not yet in the tree). 10 are on main. 7 name tests the plan tasks create.
  • just lint-prose: the alerts on changed lines are the classes every requirement line carries (verify: lines, test names, EARS statements).

Follow-ups

  • gominimal/arch#162: where a shadowed host exposure is reported, in place of the session-start line.
  • T102 (#2871) uses other test names than NET-159 and NET-162, and tags current-table behaviour NET-158 where the spec says NET-161. It must align to this spec.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the networking specification to define its local-first scope and distinguish networking requirements assigned to future specifications.
    • Added requirements for refusing activation when declared ingress ports cannot bind or public exposure is requested.
    • Clarified hostname-proxy failure reporting and port recovery, discovery of stopped VMs, exact box-zone hostname egress rules, and host exposures configured through the client.
    • Added host-alias filtering and host-side logging for own-address egress refusals.

Adds functional requirements for the walkthrough failures and the
security bounds found at the close-out, rewrites the first slice around
the macOS name and proxy fixes, keeps exact printed text out of the
requirements, and records the host-exposure question for the
architecture.

Walkthrough

This change updates the box-networking specification. It revises the initial macOS slice and adds or clarifies requirements for activation, naming, CLI output, exposure, proxy behavior, and egress policy.

Changes: Box Networking Specification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scope, activation, and publication
docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
The specification sets the first slice as macOS preview through either naming surface and adds activation refusal when a declared port cannot be published. It revises forwarder-bind requirements, lifecycle details, and sibling-specification references.
Naming and CLI reporting
docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
The specification revises proxy reporting and port recovery, adds min ls requirements for stopped-VM boxes, and expands name-based VM resolution and attach-error handling. It clarifies proxy behavior for unpublished ports.
Exposure, proxy, and egress policy
docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
The specification adds host- and public-exposure requirements and clarifies hostname egress, host-alias restrictions, exposure updates and flow termination, and host-side refusal logging.

Possibly related PRs

  • gominimal/minimal#2851: It specifies the BEP host_ip lane and egress checks that use NET behaviors defined here.
  • gominimal/minimal#2352: It implements reporting and refusal for occupied declared host ports, which NET-144 specifies.
  • gominimal/minimal#2176: It defines ingress-port ownership and failed-bind behavior also addressed by this specification.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 14bfe

This is a documentation-only change to the networking specification. Three requirements have wording gaps that could mislead implementers: NET-058's command list, NET-163's scope, and NET-162's protocol matching. None affects shipped behavior, so tightening them before or shortly after merge is enough.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "docs(specs): amend NET for the close-out fixes" follows Conventional Commit form and names the change accurately: it amends spec 18 (NET). It is somewhat broad, because "close-out fixes" does not name the specific requirements added (NET-144 to NET-157) or the rewritten ones. The title is still a real, specific description of the primary change, so it is related to the changeset.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed and substantive. It states the purpose (amending spec 18 for the close-out slices of issue #1437 and binding the host-exposure design from arch#110/arch#155), and it lists the new and changed requirements, the spec-lint and lint-prose results, and follow-ups. The template's Summary section is covered by the What section and the Checks section partly serves as Testing. Gaps: the title is not shown in the provided description, so Conventional Commit compliance cannot be verified; there is no explicit 'Closes:' or 'Refs:' line for linked issues beyond inline links; the Testing section has no pasted command output beyond counts; and the Checklist items (docs updated, BREAKING CHANGE footer) are not addressed. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, though these items could be tightened.

Advisory. None of this blocks the merge; the review decides.

Advisory, and never a merge gate. Linter: gominimal/foundry@fb5932b8, spec format: How Minimal Writes Specs.

A listener of the node's own is never mirrored,
per the architecture ruling on the macOS host-address mirror.
Per the architecture ruling: a refused verdict reads 403, an admitted
request with no listener reads 502, in every network mode.
Per the architecture ruling: box and cohort flows never get the baseline
set, the design's resolver and Box Egress Proxy openings are admitted, and
the host record of a refused egress is per flow and rate-capped.

The architecture question this PR's HIGH open question waits on is ruled: https://github.com/gominimal/arch/issues/110#issuecomment-6516440396 (owner ruling, 2026-10-30). Summary for spec 18:

  • Option A, as design §7.1 reads. The host half is a [host-exposures] table in the client's config.toml: user or org configuration, never project-supplied; one table per user per machine; proto defaults to tcp. The box half is host.min.internal in the box's own allow_dns_hosts. A box-zone name there admits the address the name answers with: the host at its exposed ports, a sibling at its lease under the sibling's ingress. No new key. CIDR coverage of the alias stays the fall-through and is never the documented spelling.
  • The gate reads the current table for each decision. An added exposure is reachable at once by every box that declared the name. A removed one is revoked and its open connections end.
  • The table loader refuses a port a Minimal listener holds (the zone answerer, the hostname proxy, the node-local BEP, a node-plane baseline endpoint at the alias, any daemon socket) and names the holder. A baseline endpoint at the alias is infrastructure for the node-plane identity only.
  • NET-156 and NET-158 stand. Requirements the ruling implies: the table and its load refusals; the reach meaning of a zone name in allow_dns_hosts (exact names; the box name per Addressing, so a <name>-<n> instance is not covered by a rule naming <name>); add and revoke on the current table; display in min session policy, min ls and min host show; own-address rows admitted at exposures (gominimal/inbox#1144). MINVMD_HOST_EXPOSURE_PORTS (fix(net): scope the host alias by the host-exposure port list #2331) is temporary. T102 (T102 — Flows to host.min.internal are refused outside the design's openings #2689) can start once these are bound.
  • Minimal's own listeners are never exposures. host_ip on a native host stays unfiltered, the reduced tier. The deny-all default stays in force.

The arch PR that lands this text in the networking design (v0.9.2) and architecture.md follows and closes gominimal/arch#110.

The networking design v0.9.2 (gominimal/arch#155) names the two halves of a
host exposure, so the HIGH open question on what configures one closes.

- NET-159: the host's half is the client config.toml's [host-exposures]
table; a project minimal.toml section is ignored with a warning.
- NET-160: the box's half is host.min.internal in egress.allow_dns_hosts.
- NET-161: each flow is decided by the current table; a removed exposure
  ends its established flows.
- NET-162: an entry on a port a Minimal listener holds is refused at load,
  naming the holder.

NET-160 and NET-161 bound only a VM-backed host. Design v0.9.2 §7.1
Lanes applies the table to own_ip boxes on every host and not to a
native host_ip box, so both now bind an own-address box on a native
host, each with a minimald test.

NET-159 makes tcp the protocol of an entry that names none. NET-058's
parent drops its WHILE two VMs run clause, so its unknown-box and
stopped-VM refusals bind with one VM too.

Reviewed at 14bfe2de against main (853df318), arch main (design v0.9.2 §7.1), the code on main, and the sibling specs that cite NET IDs (BOX 29, BEP 24, TEL 25, BCLI 28 at #1991). No IDs are removed or renumbered, and most new verify tests exist on main. Requesting changes for two blockers and a few unfixed threads:

Blockers

  1. The main merge reverted NET-138's dormant-creation comment (L835). T46 (#2760, ff44045d) changed it to "holds no name: a new registration under the name supersedes it (BOX-004)…". The conflict resolution in ae822ae0 brought back the old "holds its name, so no other box is handed them". This PR didn't mean to change that line, and the old text contradicts BOX-004 and the T46 code.
  2. NET-163 is broader than the design (L629, L634). Inline.

Should-fix
3. NET-058 (L486): two threads were resolved without a change. The statement still names min net expose and omits session policy/destroy, and the comment still lists min stop. Inline.
4. NET-069 (L592) cites proxy_refuses_a_withdrawn_port_like_direct, which came from #2732. #2732 was closed without merging, so the test isn't on main. Inline.
5. The arch pin is behind the citations (L6). Inline.
6. NET-144's verify line (L192) doesn't name any of the three tests T100 merged exactly. Inline.
7. The design gives min session policy a duty no requirement binds. §7.1 Lanes says a native host_ip box's min session policy states that the table is not applied, "rather than listing exposures". The decline of CodeRabbit's display finding rests on that text, so the spec has to bind it.
8. The PR body is stale, and it becomes the squash message. It lists NET-146/147/155 as new, but they're on main. It doesn't mention NET-158 to NET-163. It describes a HIGH open question this PR has since closed. It reports 23 lint findings (13 new), but the head has 19 (9 new).

Nits

  • CodeRabbit's thread at L788 (port-only shadowing vs protocol) has no reply. The design is port-only, so a one-line answer is enough.
  • Decision history in comments: L633 ("ruling, 2026-10-30", "settles gominimal/inbox#867, #777 and #1144"), L761 ("closes the HIGH open question"), and the #2331 "temporary override" note.
  • The shadow sub-requirement's comment (around L791) declines the session-start line the design names. AGENTS.md is a real reason, but declining it departs from the design, so it belongs in arch, as with the display finding.
  • L836: "a listener of the node's own is never mirrored" is a second independent clause. It should be its own requirement.
  • The first slice (L80) cites NET-069, a refusal, for "opens through the proxy alike". NET-071 or NET-016 describes that behaviour.
  • "Minimal listener" (NET-162) is not defined in the spec.
  • NET-163 is tagged event-driven, but the behaviour is state-driven.
  • T102's PR #2871 implements the table under different test names: host_exposures_table_refuses_a_listener_port against NET-162's host_exposure_on_minimal_listener_port_refused, and host_exposures_table_parses_…/…_follow_the_file against NET-159. It also tags current-table behaviour NET-158 where the spec says NET-161. One side has to align.
  • The NET-058 comment uses spellings that BCLI (#1991, now queued) retires. Whichever lands second has to update BCLI's Rollout list.

BOX spec 29's HIGH open question on NET-012/013/015 ("exists"/"destroyed", #2041) is untouched here, which is fine for this PR. Blocker 1 moves NET-138 the wrong way on name holding, though.

@mitodrummer thanks. Everything is addressed in 7d791acf, and I replied on each inline thread. I left your threads open for you to resolve.

Blockers

  1. NET-138: main's T46 text is back. My main merge took the wrong side.
  2. NET-163 is scoped to the name of another box, on a VM-backed host or for an own-address box. host.min.internal stays with NET-160. A native host-address box's name rules admit nothing (NET-079). The instance refusal keeps the allow_subnets fall-through. It is tagged state+unwanted.

Should-fix
3. NET-058 uses BCLI's spellings, since #1991 is close: min box attach|exec|show --network|rm and min net forward. BCLI-042's aliases are noted in the comment. min net expose and min stop are out. The unknown-box refusal reads "no VM holds", so it no longer overlaps the stopped-VM one. Once this lands, BCLI's Rollout list no longer needs NET-058 for min session policy or min session destroy.
4. NET-069 → proxy_forwards_runtime_published_port.
5. The arch pin, arch_sha, the box.toml link and the reference links are at 8640f85. updated: is 2026-11-03.
6. NET-144 lists the three T100 tests by exact name.
7. New NET-160 sub-requirement: on a native host, min box show --network for a host-address box states that the [host-exposures] table does not apply, in place of a list of exposures.
8. The PR body is rewritten against main. spec-lint --repo-root . gives 17 P004 findings, 10 of them already on main.

Nits

spec-lint: 0 findings.

Re-checked at 7d791acf. Every point is fixed in the text: NET-138 has T46's text back, NET-163 is scoped with the allow_subnets fall-through, NET-069 points at proxy_forwards_runtime_published_port, the pin is at 8640f85, NET-144 lists the three T100 tests, the new NET-160 sub-requirement is in, and the decision history is gone. Thanks.

One non-blocking note on NET-058: it now names min box attach, min box exec, min box show --network and min box rm. On main, min box has only spec|audit|list|show, and box_name_resolves_vm_without_flag exercises today's session verbs. So a shipped requirement now binds verbs that land with BCLI's tasks, and its verify test checks different commands. Consider naming today's min session attach|exec|policy|destroy with the min box forms as their successors, or noting in the comment that the statement moves to the BCLI verbs as they ship. Fine as a follow-up.

@minimal-foundry minimal-foundry Bot added the review:approved minimal-review approved the current head label Nov 3, 2026
Takes main's NET-138 dormant-creation text back, which the main merge
lost. Scopes NET-163 to a box's name on a host with an interposition
point, keeps the allow_subnets fall-through for a parallel instance, and
leaves host.min.internal to NET-160. NET-058 names the host-side commands
in BCLI's spellings, and its unknown-box refusal no longer overlaps the
stopped-VM one.

Also binds the native host_ip network view, splits the unmirrored node
listener into its own requirement, defines Minimal's own listeners, fixes
the NET-069 and NET-144 verify lines and the first slice's citation, and
bumps the arch pin to design v0.9.2 (gominimal/arch#155).
NET-058 names min session attach, exec, policy and destroy, which its
verify test exercises, and its comment names the min box forms that
BCLI gives as their successors. The statement moves to those forms when
BCLI's tasks ship them.

@mitodrummer took your NET-058 note in 62a41c8b. The statement names today's min session attach|exec|policy|destroy and min net forward, which box_name_resolves_vm_without_flag exercises. The comment names BCLI's min box attach|exec|show --network|rm as their successors and says the statement moves to them when BCLI's tasks ship them. That puts NET-058 back on BCLI's Rollout list for those aliases.

I also rewrapped 7d791acf's commit message for commitlint (the 100-character limit), which forced a push. The files are unchanged apart from NET-058.

NET-058 now names min session policy, destroy and exec, so each alias
stays open until NET-058 moves to the min box form. NET-160's new
sub-bullet cites the min session policy alias too.

BCLI (#1991) merged first, so this PR updates its Rollout list (9e1c71aa, after a merge of main). NET-058 is added to the min session policy, min session destroy and min session exec rows, and NET-160's new sub-bullet to min session policy. Each of those aliases stays open until NET-058 moves to its min box form.

Reviewed against design v0.9.2 as merged in gominimal/arch#155. NET-159 to NET-163 match those: the two halves, the lane scope (own-address boxes on every host, the cohort on a VM node, no table for a native host-address box), the current-table rule with revocation, the lifetime listener exclusion with the shadow log, the sibling-name half with the parallel-instance refusal, and the CIDR fall-through. The arch pin at 8640f85 is correct.

Two notes. You were right on display: the design binds min host show only, and my pointer comment listed more than it says. I will answer gominimal/arch#162 by naming the box's own network view as the surface that stays for a shadowed entry, with min host show joining when it exists; a display sub-requirement on NET-160 can follow that amendment. T102 (#2871) aligning to this spec's test names and tags is yours.
