fix(minimald): fail activation when a declared host port is already taken - #2352
Conversation
…t later An own-ip session that declares --ingress <port>:<internal> on a host port another process already holds activated silently (exit 0), and every later exec/attach failed on the raw forwarder refusal (HTTP 500: bind: address already in use) with no usable trace at activation. The daemon now reads the OS's own EADDRINUSE words in that refusal and skips just that mapping: the box keeps the forwards it could bind, the attach completes, and each skipped port logs a warn line with the session's name. Every other refusal keeps the existing rollback-and-fail. The client learns the box's published address in the finalize reply (report_published_address, gated like report_shared_port_collisions) and probes each declared TCP host port at activation, printing a warning that names the port and the way out -- the box activates either way, never refused on it. The daemon now skips a declared ingress port that another process holds, and it keeps the box's name published. Section 7.1 line 249 says the bind succeeds before the name is published. It also says a failed bind on an occupied address is a surfaced error, never a silent fallback. Remove the skip and keep the rollback (C1). The activation probe and the published_address field are acceptable. Make the warning text say what the daemon does (C2). Do not probe after activate hooks ran, because the box's own forward then holds the port (C3).

Per review: a declared host port another process holds no longer skips the forward while the name stays registered. The apply rolls back and fails as NET-121 requires, with an error that names the taken port. The daemon now probes the declared ports at finalize, when no activate hook bound them, and reports the taken ones. The client prints one warning per port, in place of its own probe.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No Review threads the coder judged:
A declared --ingress host port that another process holds no longer leaves the box's name standing for a port that refused. The attach fails and rolls back as NET-121 requires, and the error names the port ("host port N is already in use on the host, so the session cannot forward it") in place of the raw gvproxy 500. At Notes from the agent: Design choice for directive item 1: the change keeps the failure (the minimal-arch C1 route) and does not withdraw the name per port. The skip arm, AppliedIngress and the gvproxy_network skip loop are removed. gvproxy_network.rs is back to its main version, so its NET-121 comments and the '1:1 with the request' comment hold again, and session-e2e.sh needs no change. No spec edit was necessary. Item 2: the client probe is removed. FinalizeSessionResponse.published_address becomes host_ports_in_use: Vec, and the request flag report_published_address becomes report_host_ports_in_use. The daemon fills the list in finalize with a bind probe on the published address. It skips the probe when activate hooks ran, because their host already bound the forwards (a taken port there already failed the finalize). Item 3: nothing retries the bind, so the warning now says 'Commands in this session will fail until that port is free.' It says 'on the host', not 'on this machine', because the daemon can be remote. Optional item: each taken port now logs one warn at finalize and one warn at the failed apply, at two different moments, never two at the same bind. The 'registers no name' half of C1's test request is covered by the unchanged Err arm in gvproxy_network.rs. The new unit test proves the failure, the error text and the rollback unexpose at the apply_ingress level. No live-session e…[truncated] |

…ip the probe on a vm host The taken-port error reaches the person at every failed command, so it now names the port and the next step (free the port, or activate again with --ingress <other>:<internal>) and drops the forwarder's raw refusal, which the apply's warn line already logs. On a VM-backed host the forwarder binds on the host OS, so a bind in the guest cannot find a port the host holds and can warn falsely for a host_ip box. host_ports_in_use now takes the control channel and reports nothing when the host unbinds the declared forwards. The comments state the all-or-nothing rule without review history, and the CLI warning says "activate again with --ingress" in place of "declare --ingress".

/revise Apply /arch-review's conditions at 33b0f52. C1: in the activation (finalize) path, when the declared ingress probe finds a host port already held, fail the finalize with an error that names the port, before the Active write and before the name is published, per architecture §7.1 line 249; keep the spawn path's rollback as is. C2: remove the reply fields (host_ports_in_use / published-address warning plumbing) and the CLI warning that C1 makes dead. Update the tests and any e2e text that pinned the warning. Change nothing else. |

The finalize probe now runs right after the name registration, before the activate-hook launch and the Active write. A declared TCP host port that another process holds fails the finalize with the named-port error. The host_ports_in_use reply field, its request flag and the CLI warning are removed, because a held port no longer reaches a successful reply.

Round 3 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No Review threads the coder judged:
On a native host, activation of an own-ip box fails with exit non-zero when a declared --ingress host port is already in use. The error is the daemon's message: "host port is already in use on the host, so the session cannot forward it. Free the port, or activate again with --ingress :." The box never reaches Active. activate no longer prints a warning for this case, and the finalize reply has no host_ports_in_use field. Notes from the agent: C1: the probe now runs directly after register_hostname and before the activate-hook launch and the Active write. It returns address_in_use_error(port), which is now pub in net/policy.rs. The probe cannot run before the name is published, because it needs the address that registration publishes. So the name stays published until the client's activate cleanup destroys the box. That is the same as for every other finalize failure after registration, as the existing comment in setup.rs says. The probe still skips boxes with activate hooks: their launch binds the forwards, and the apply fails with the same error. C2: the host_ports_in_use reply field, the report_host_ports_in_use request flag, the rpc.rs gate, the CLI warning loop, host_port_in_use_warning and their tests are removed. All the |

The change now conforms to §7.1 line 249. A declared host port that another process holds fails the finalize, the rollback runs, and the error names the port. The title and body of the PR still describe the removed warning path and two removed tests. The squash commit will carry that text. Make the edit in C1 before you merge.

…olves to (#2713) T98. A microVM daemon walked the host's loopback once, at its start, so after min finalize-install new boxes stood at the 127.0.0.1 interim until the VM restarted. The create handler on a VM-backed daemon now asks the forwarder's walk, not the guest's own lo, and every session start walks again, so a present landing moves boxes at the interim onto their range addresses and a present-to-absent walk moves them back. Walks run one at a time on the shared probe port. A held probe port counts as bound, a leftover probe forward is released before it is read, and a walk that gets no answer keeps a present verdict. The absent landing also moves the node's own address to the interim. The NET-040 spec line and the macOS e2e case come with the change. Backport of #2713, folded from #2740. Adapted to the line: - box_manager.rs and box_manager/handle.rs hunks land in sessions.rs: RangeWalk, RangeWalkSource and RangeWalkAnswer, the range_walk cell on ManagerHandle and WeakManagerHandle, session_start_range_walk and install_range_walk_standin. - rpc/tests.rs hunks land in the inline tests in rpc.rs. - crate::traced::spawn becomes tokio::spawn in the stand-in forwarders. - ADDRESS_IN_USE_BODY is shared with #2352: one copy stays in net/policy.rs. …aken (#2352) Prerequisite for T100. A declared TCP host port that another process holds at the box's published address fails the finalize before the Active write (NET-121), with an error that names the port and the next step. The daemon probes on a native host. On a VM-backed host the forwarder binds on the host OS, so the probe is skipped and the spawn's apply reports the port. A forwarder's EADDRINUSE refusal fails the apply the same way. Backport of #2352, folded from #2738. Adapted to the line: main's box_actor/setup.rs hunk lands in session.rs, boxes::IpProto and boxes::NetworkMode become sessions::, and the fake forwarder spawns with tokio::spawn. The split from T100 carries those renames here, so this commit builds alone. (cherry picked from commit 9437ba3)

When an own-ip session declared

A taken port fails the apply, which rolls back and withdraws the name. On a native host, the finalize now probes each declared TCP host port at the published address before the activate hooks run and before the session goes
Active. If another process holds one, the finalize fails, the rollback runs, and the session never publishes its name (§7.1 line 249). The error names the port and the next step: free the port, or activate again with--ingress <other>:<internal>. On a VM-backed host the forwarder binds on the host OS, so there is no probe, and the spawn's error reports the taken port. The probe reports the first held port it finds.
