feat(packaging): CI-owned AUR, Homebrew, and deb/rpm/apk distribution - #1313
Conversation
crates/version/build.rs falls back to package.version when no v* git tag is reachable (source tarballs), and it was stale at 0.5.0-rc1. The release workflow now asserts tag equality going forward.
Extract the release workflow's per-binary cargo invocations (fat-LTO serializes links), FEATURES plumbing for the guest minimald, fail-loud static libkrun for minvmd, and completions generation into scripts/dist-build.sh. Packaging entrypoints call this instead of hand-rolling cargo; the Linux release jobs call it too so CI builds match downstream builds.

Also flagged, below the cut: publish-brew has no continue-on-error and its preconditions (tap repo, BREW_TAP_TOKEN) are out of scope, so every tag release goes red until those land; nfpm packaging sits before the install.sh staging and the unstable flip, so a transient failure aborts a release mid-publish; publish-aur runs after the irreversible channel flip and is the only job with no permissions: block; no preremove/postremove, so /etc/apparmor.d/minimald is orphaned on uninstall; the epoch=1 comment's vercmp example is backwards; dist/ isn't gitignored and dist-build.sh does rm -rf on an unvalidated env knob; the completions incantation now exists in three drifted copies; package-nfpm.sh re-downloads ~257 MB it already has on disk.

I'm excited to get this in, but I would feel a lot more comfortable if the design was more modular and presented in a new workflow.
Consider something like this:
# .github/workflows/publish-packages.yml
on:
workflow_call:
inputs:
version: {type: string, required: true} # semver, no v
sha: {type: string, required: true} # the promoted short sha
dry_run: {type: boolean, default: false}
workflow_dispatch:
inputs: {version: …, sha: …, dry_run: …}
permissions:
contents: read
and in promote.yml, one job:
publish-packages:
needs: promote
if: ${{ inputs.target == 'stable' }}
uses: ./.github/workflows/publish-packages.yml
with:
version: ${{ needs.promote.outputs.semver }}
sha: ${{ needs.promote.outputs.sha }}
dry_run: ${{ inputs.dry_run }}
secrets: inherit
You will want to resolve the semver on the runner, and keep the YAML a thin scheduler, without a bunch of embedded scripting.

Blocking: Tagging before nightly permanently poisons the sha, so this job can never fire for it.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope. Matches its stated intent: a CI-owned publish pipeline (AUR, Homebrew, deb/rpm/apk) built on one shared dist-build.sh entrypoint, plus a version-consistency gate (assert-version) and the package.version bump to 0.5.3. Every changed file traces to that goal.
Clobber. The reshuffled build steps in release.yml (libkrun build moved earlier, the three separate cargo build lines replaced by scripts/dist-build.sh) are a refactor of this PR's own prior work (see cb264f6, 53dbcfa in the log), not a revert of someone else's unrelated change. Nothing here undoes a recent fix.
Correctness. I verified the minvmd/default-features claim in dist-build.sh's header against the actual Cargo.tomls (accurate), confirmed LIBKRUN_PREFIX is exported before it's needed given the reordered steps, and fetched upstream's checksums.txt to confirm vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock's pinned digests are correct. I did not find anything new to report: this PR already has 29 open review threads (a human reviewer plus coderabbitai) that between them cover every file in the diff and every defect I independently found while reading it — the Homebrew formula's Mktemp#/ and directory-install bugs, publish-aur.sh running makepkg as root inside a root container, promote.yml's publish-aur never checking dry_run, the semver-staging step hijacking promote.yml's "latest staged" resolution, publish-brew's missing prerelease guard, Cargo.toml's new fallback version already being a shipped version (reproducing exactly the failure mode assert-version exists to prevent), and the missing test harness for the ~1,000 new lines of shell. I read those threads and re-checked the three files with no existing thread (Cargo.lock, vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock, packaging/arch/minimal-bin.install); nothing further turned up there. I did not compile or run any of the new scripts, per the no-build constraint — the verification above is static/read-only.
What ran
5 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. grep crates/minimal/Cargo.toml + crates/minvmd/Cargo.toml for the default-features=false/libkrun feature claim in scripts/dist-build.sh's header comment — self-reported
Confirmed: crates/minimal/Cargo.toml:78 depends on minvmd with default-features = false, and crates/minvmd/Cargo.toml declares default = ["libkrun"]. The script's rationale for building minvmd in its own cargo invocation is accurate, not narration drift.
2. Read .github/actions/build-libkrun-static-linux/action.yml to check LIBKRUN_PREFIX is exported to GITHUB_ENV before dist-build.sh needs it — self-reported
Confirmed: the composite action's last step writes LIBKRUN_PREFIX to $GITHUB_ENV, and release.yml's new step order puts 'Build static libkrun (musl)' immediately before 'Build static release binaries' (which now runs scripts/dist-build.sh), matching the moved-up ordering the diff's comments describe. No ordering bug from the refactor.
3. Fetched the upstream nfpm v2.47.0 release checksums.txt and diffed against vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock — exit 0 · self-reported
Both pinned digests (Linux_x86_64 and Linux_arm64) match the upstream-published checksums exactly. The new dependency pin is not stale or tampered.
4. Checked whether packaging/arch/minimal-bin.install and the nfpm postinstall heredoc in scripts/package-nfpm.sh can fail on a host without bash (install-apparmor-profile.sh is #!/usr/bin/env bash) — self-reported
The apk/deb/rpm postinstall checks
command -v apparmor_parserbefore ever invoking the bash-shebang loader, so on the realistic no-AppArmor case (e.g. Alpine) it exits 0 without needing bash. Only a host with apparmor_parser installed but no bash would hit this, which is an unusual combination on the distros nfpm targets — below the confidence bar to report.
5. Read all 29 existing PR review threads in .review/threads.json and matched them against every file changed in the diff — self-reported
Every file this diff touches — promote.yml, release.yml, Cargo.toml, justfile, PKGBUILD-bin.tmpl, minimal.rb.tmpl, nfpm.yaml, dist-build.sh, package-nfpm.sh, publish-aur.sh, publish-brew.sh, render-packaging.sh — already has one or more open, specific threads from a human reviewer (norrietaylor) and/or coderabbitai covering the substantive defects (Homebrew Mktemp#/ bugs, publish-aur running makepkg as root, the promote.yml dry-run/target gating gap, the semver-staging 'latest' hijack, missing prerelease guards on publish-brew, the Cargo.toml version-fallback exactly reproducing the bug assert-version was meant to catch, render-packaging.sh's empty-var and
&-expansion holes, the missing BASH_COMPLETION_USER_DIR in the AUR template, frozen-YAML logic that CONTRIBUTING.md says belongs in scripts/, and the missing test harness for the five new scripts). Cargo.lock, vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock, and packaging/arch/minimal-bin.install are the only diff files with no existing thread; each was checked directly above and nothing new surfaced.

Monorepo as source of truth; satellite repos are generated output. Templates live under packaging/ and scripts/publish-*.sh do clone-render-push on release: - packaging/arch/PKGBUILD-bin.tmpl: semver pkgver (epoch=1 over the old short-sha scheme), AppArmor install hook, template shas - packaging/homebrew/minimal.rb.tmpl: binary tap formula for the macOS assets with the slp/krun/libkrun dependency - packaging/nfpm.yaml + vendor/nfpm lock: one config for deb/rpm/apk from the staged static binaries - release.yml: assert-version job, semver-keyed staging rows, versions/<v>/pkg/ upload, publish-brew job on tag push (these and the promote.yml job are the one batched CODEOWNER-gated workflows change) - promote.yml: publish-aur job on stable promotion, skipping untagged staged shas
A leftover `o "publish-aur: ..."` line after the success echo made the script exit 127 (command not found) under `set -euo pipefail` after the push had already succeeded, failing the AUR publish job on every first run.
Replaces the noreply placeholder in publish-aur.sh and package-nfpm.sh with the project's official contact; MAINTAINER still overrides.
render-packaging.sh accepted a set-but-empty variable (printenv exits 0 for it) and, under bash >= 5.2's patsub_replacement, expanded a literal & in a replacement value back to the match — an & in MAINTAINER re-injected the token it had just replaced. An empty checksum or version token ships as the empty string, invisible to the leftover scan. Also closes a third hole the new harness caught: the leftover scan (@@[^@]*@@) could not span a token with an embedded @, so @@one@TWO@@ passed through unrendered. Any surviving @@ now fails the run. Harness: scripts/render-packaging_test.sh (just test-shell).
…krun Three defects in the formula/publisher, all now exercised by a fixture harness: - (bin/"min").install created a bin/min/ directory with the binary inside it, so no min executable was ever installed; the hash form bin.install ... => "min" renames on install. - resource stage blocks ran inside the staging dir: there is no Mktemp#staging to reach for; bin.install with the relative basename is the working form. - minvmd resolves libkrun via @rpath/libkrun.1.dylib through an @loader_path/../lib rpath — this prefix's lib/, which depends_on never populates (the slp/krun dependency installs into its own Cellar, which @loader_path cannot reach, and dyld resolves against the installed binary's realpath). The formula now installs the release's trimmed dylib as lib/libkrun.1.dylib, reproducing the installer's bin/lib layout. publish-brew.sh: PKGVER must be a released semver — a prerelease is refused outright (Homebrew has no channels; an RC would overwrite the only formula with no opt-out). MINIMAL_RELEASE_URL overridable so the harness drives a dry run from fixtures with no network, no credentials. Dry-run diffs force git's built-in diff (--no-ext-diff) so the output shape does not depend on the runner's git config.
- minvmd joins the AUR source arrays and package(): VM-backed Linux sessions need it on PATH, and every staged versions/<semver>/ row carries the static-musl build (static libkrun, no dlopen), so the package stays self-contained. The AUR package and the deb/rpm/apk packages now agree on the file list; nfpm.yaml's stale references (aur/PKGBUILD, the packaging plan's Phase 3 list) are corrected. - makepkg --printsrcinfo refuses root outright (FS#67158, before the printsrcinfo early-return), which is every container job — and the > .SRCINFO redirect had already truncated the cloned file. When root, the generation runs as nobody (runuser, then su) over a world-readable copy; the output is written to a temp file and renamed, so a failure leaves the previous .SRCINFO intact. - PKGVER must be a released semver: pacman's pkgver forbids hyphens, so an RC could never publish — rejected here with that reason instead of makepkg's lint blaming the template. - _bucket is stamped from @@BUCKET_URL@@: a MINIMAL_BUCKET_URL override now changes the source URLs along with the checksums fetched from them. - BASH_COMPLETION_USER_DIR is set for the generation run, mirroring scripts/dist-build.sh: without it a clean chroot's min silently skips bash and the next install -Dm644 aborts package(). - --dry-run no longer demands the bot key: it never pushes, so without credentials it reads the public https mirror. Harness: scripts/publish-aur_test.sh drives the publisher end to end against a file:// bucket and a fixture AUR remote (no network, no key, stubbed makepkg) and asserts the rendered diff carries no unrendered tokens, real digests, and that nothing is pushed.
package-nfpm.sh downloaded versions/<semver>/ artifacts and executed the min binary without checking anything: a corrupted or wrongly-staged object entered the .deb/.rpm/.apk users install. Every download is now verified against the staged components manifest — the SHA-256s stage-release.sh wrote and the installer itself trusts — before anything chmods, executes, or packages it. dist-build.sh's completions gate compares the host OS as well as the arch: an arm64 macOS host matches an aarch64-linux target on arch alone, and running that musl ELF is an exec-format failure after the whole fat-LTO build.
The promote flow's packaging publishes could never fire and the default promote target could be hijacked, both from inline YAML that nothing tests. Logic moves into scripts/ per the repo's convention (logic in scripts/, the lane calls it), each with a harness run by just test-shell and the workspace suite: - resolve-release-version.sh: promoted sha -> released semver. The old git describe --exact-match only matched when the promoted sha IS the tagged commit — and the nightly that gets promoted sits after the tag commit, so the AUR publish was a silent permanent skip (or, with git missing from the archlinux container, a swallowed exit 127). Resolution is now the tag on the sha itself, else the newest released v* tag reachable from it; prerelease tags never resolve and never fall through to an older release (that would publish a downgrade). Exit 3 = nothing applies (skip with a notice), exit 1 = hard failure (a missing tool or unresolvable sha fails the job; it never masquerades as nothing to publish). - latest-staged-version.sh: the default promote target. Tag pushes stage versions/<semver>/ rows now, and staging them after the sha row made the semver row the newest object — promoting "0.5.4" as if it were a sha failed verify-nightly-provenance only after the human approval gate, or with override_provenance pointed stable at a non-commit. The lookup filters to commit rows before picking. - assert-release-version.sh: the tag-vs-package.version gate, out of release.yml's inline sed. - stage-release.sh --pkg-dir/--pkg-only: the versions/<semver>/pkg/ upload goes through the one definition of staging (same immutable cache headers) instead of an inline gcloud call. - backfill-version-row.sh: releases shipped before the semver-row convention (0.5.3 and earlier) have no versions/<semver>/ row, so the documented just pkg-nfpm 0.5.3 failed with nothing to fix it. The backfill restages from the sha row via stage-release.sh. promote.yml: publish-aur is gated on target == stable && !dry_run (a rehearsal promotion pushed a real commit to the AUR), declares minimal permissions, installs git/openssh BEFORE checkout (base-devel has neither; without git the checkout fell back to a tarball with no .git and the resolution had nothing to resolve), and resolves the semver through the script. publish-brew moves here from release.yml with the same gate: Homebrew has no channels, so shipping on tag push bypassed the promotion gate and an RC tag would have overwritten the tap's only formula.
0.5.3 is already shipped: a no-.git build of any post-0.5.3 commit reported 0.5.3, the exact wrong-version-tarball failure release.yml's assert-version gate exists to catch. The fallback stays on the NEXT unreleased version until that tag lands (comment says so). Cargo.lock's workspace entries 10BC8 follow.
crates/common/tests/shell_harnesses.rs discovers scripts/*_test.sh by convention and runs each — the reviewed extension point for coverage the frozen workflows cannot schedule (the same shape as shell_lint.rs driving lint-shell.sh). A new harness under scripts/ is picked up automatically and a failing one fails the always-on Linux lanes; no YAML changes. justfile: test-shell runs the same set locally (plus shellcheck); dist-build and pkg-nfpm are [linux]-scoped — from macOS one skips minvmd's mandatory codesign and the other execs a musl ELF — and their arguments are quote()d so shell syntax in a target or pkgver cannot run ahead of the scripts' own validation. pkg-nfpm's doc no longer suggests a command that fails for every release staged before the semver-row convention: it names backfill-version-row instead.
Two assumptions that hold on a dev box but not on a CI runner: - resolve-release-version_test.sh configured identity only on the fixture's work clone, but the tagless-repo case commits in a second repository — on a runner with no global git identity that died with "Author identity unknown" (exit 128). Identity now travels through the GIT_AUTHOR_*/GIT_COMMITTER_* exports so every repository the harness touches can commit. - publish-brew_test.sh's run_dry defaulted its version argument and was only ever called with none, which shellcheck reports as SC2120/SC2119 and the lint gate fails on any finding. The version is a required argument now, passed explicitly at every call.

Compare
- resolve-release-version.sh: a sha carrying two released tags printed both (multiline output breaks downstream PKGVER validation); only the newest is resolved now, and the harness's dual-tag fixture really tags two releases on one commit so the case is exercised - publish-aur.sh: runuser resets PATH (and HOME) toward the target account, so the nobody stand-in could not find makepkg — or a harness stub shadowing it; the payload re-exports the caller's PATH and the scratch HOME, and the aur harness makes its root traversable for that stand-in (mktemp dirs are 0700) - publish-brew_test.sh: digests now come from the publisher's portable sha256_file (extracted, one definition) instead of sha256sum, which is absent on some hosts - shell_harnesses.rs: unreadable directory entries fail the gate loudly instead of silently shrinking the suite, and each harness runs under its declared shebang interpreter — install_test.sh is POSIX-sh and proved under dash by the shell-installer lane, so bash no longer masks that contract - assert-release-version.sh: usage text now says a non-tag flow asserts nothing and exits 0 (it was never fatal)
`author_association` reports MEMBER only for a PUBLIC org member; a private one comes back CONTRIBUTOR and the reviewer refused them. gominimal/minimal#1313 skipped nine consecutive runs that way and was only ever reviewed by hand, and four of thirteen org members were invisible for the same reason. foundry drops the author test from the `pull_request` path rather than widening it — the head-repo check beside it already proves write access, since a branch cannot exist in the repo unless someone with write pushed it. This is the re-render. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01NF6NxSgMfMj1Z6ZpomE7o1

Scope. PR #1313 is the second review round of CI-owned AUR/Homebrew/deb-rpm-apk distribution: new publish-aur/publish-brew jobs in promote.yml, new assert-version/dist-build/nfpm-packaging steps in release.yml, ~10 new scripts/*.sh (+ matching *_test.sh fixtures) for version resolution, rendering, and publishing, new packaging/{arch,homebrew,nfpm.yaml} templates, a Cargo.toml version bump to 0.5.4, and a new convention-discovered crates/common/tests/shell_harnesses.rs gate. All touched files are within the packaging/release surface described in the PR body; no unrelated files are touched.
Clobber. git log --oneline -8 on promote.yml, release.yml, Cargo.toml, and justfile shows normal incremental history consistent with this same branch's prior commits (6afa4a8, 67b2cd2, 4a07398, f24911e, ...). Nothing indicates a revert of other contributors' unrelated work.
Correctness. I cross-referenced all ~20 resolved:false, outdated:true threads from the first review round against the current diff by opening each named file directly (not trusting the PR body's claims), and every one of them is genuinely fixed: Homebrew's Mktemp#staging crash and directory-install bug (packaging/homebrew/minimal.rb.tmpl), makepkg refusing EUID 0 (scripts/publish-aur.sh's runuser/su nobody fallback), the missing git/openssh in archlinux:base-devel, the semver-row-hijacks-latest-staged bug (scripts/latest-staged-version.sh), the missing prerelease/hyphen guards in both publishers, the stale Cargo.toml version, render-packaging.sh's empty-var and patsub_replacement holes, the missing BASH_COMPLETION_USER_DIR, the hardcoded _bucket (now @@BUCKET_URL@@, fed by publish-aur.sh's exported BUCKET_URL), the unreachable --dry-run path, missing [linux] justfile attributes, and the missing shell test harness (now 6 fixture-driven *_test.sh files plus the discovery gate). I did not re-raise any resolved:true coderabbitai thread (direct <

One blocking-severity thread (promote.yml:262, 'Tagging before nightly permanently poisons the sha') remains unaddressed by this diff and is reported below — it sits squarely in the new publish-aur/publish-brew jobs. The companion thread at promote.yml:275 (zizmor permissions regression) does not hold up: both new jobs declare the minimal permissions: contents: read, which is as tight as a checkout-only job can get; I'm not reporting it.
I also checked, and found clean, several new-code areas not covered by the old threads: the manifest column format stage-release.sh writes is byte-for-byte what package-nfpm.sh parses (cross-read both files); the semver-anchoring regexes in publish-aur.sh/publish-brew.sh/package-nfpm.sh are correctly ^...$-anchored and consistently reject/accept prerelease per each consumer's actual constraint; crates/common/tests/shell_harnesses.rs's shebang-parsing (declared_interpreter) correctly extracts the interpreter for both #!/bin/sh and #!/usr/bin/env bash forms; and a secrets scan of the full diff turned up nothing beyond the legitimate pinned vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock sha256 digests.
Left unchecked (needs a build). I did not compile anything, per the no-build constraint: I did not exercise dist-build.sh's actual musl/gnu minvmd build paths, run any of the new *_test.sh fixtures, or execute zizmor/shellcheck/gitleaks — my permissions and secrets checks above are manual reads standing in for those tools, at correspondingly lower confidence. The versions/0.5.3 backfill gap is explicitly scoped by the PR as a one-time manual step (scripts/backfill-version-row.sh) rather than a defect, so I did not report it.

Verification log
1. Diff hunk headers for .github/workflows/promote.yml (@@ -261,8 +253,107 @@) confirm publish-aur/publish-brew jobs are wholly new + lines, both gated needs: promote. — self-reported
Confirmed the two new jobs are entirely additive and both reuse the same promote-job provenance gate.
2. Read scripts/verify-nightly-provenance.sh in full. — self-reported
It hard-requires a successful nightly.yml run whose head_sha matches AND whose smoke-linux-amd64/smoke-linux-kvm jobs concluded success (not skipped).
3. grep .github/workflows/nightly.yml for its no-op/already-staged skip logic. — self-reported
nightly.yml explicitly skips build+smoke when HEAD is already staged, but still advances the nightly channel to it (comment: 'will still point nightly at it').
4. Read scripts/resolve-release-version.sh in full to check whether its reachable-tag fallback mitigates the exact-tag-commit case. — self-reported
Fallback only helps when a LATER commit gets promoted; resolving the tag commit itself still requires provenance for that exact sha.
5. Check thread .github/workflows/promote.yml:275 (zizmor permissions regression) against current permissions: blocks. — self-reported
publish-aur/publish-brew both declare only permissions: contents: read (least-privilege for a checkout); found no excess grant, not reporting this thread.
6. grep packaging/arch/PKGBUILD-bin.tmpl and scripts/publish-aur.sh for _bucket/BUCKET_URL. — self-reported
Confirmed prior 'hardcoded _bucket' bug is fixed: template now uses @@BUCKET_URL@@ and publish-aur.sh exports BUCKET_URL (overridable via MINIMAL_BUCKET_URL) before rendering.
7. Secrets scan of .review/pr.diff for private-key headers, AKIA/ghp_/xox tokens, and suspicious literal credential assignments. — self-reported
None found; the only hex-looking blobs are the legitimate pinned sha256 digests in vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock.
8. git log --oneline -8 for .github/workflows/promote.yml, release.yml, Cargo.toml, justfile. — self-reported
Normal incremental history matching this PR's own prior commits on this branch; no sign of clobbering unrelated work.

HIGH · correctness · confidence 0.75 · in publish-aur / publish-brew jobs (needs: promote)
The new publish-aur and publish-brew jobs both gate on needs: promote succeeding for target == 'stable', and promote's step calls scripts/verify-nightly-provenance.sh, which requires a successful nightly.yml run whose head_sha matches AND whose smoke-linux-amd64/smoke-linux-kvm jobs actually ran with conclusion 'success' (not skipped). But a tag push runs release.yml (triggered by push: tags:), which stages that exact commit's sha-row itself — a release.yml run, never a nightly.yml run. When the cron next fires against that same commit (still HEAD), nightly.yml's own 'Determine whether HEAD is already staged' check (nightly.yml:58-66) sees it's already staged and skips build+smoke as a no-op night, while still advancing the nightly channel pointer. That produces a nightly.yml run whose head_sha does match the tag commit, but whose smoke-linux-amd64/smoke-linux-kvm jobs are 'skipped', not 'success' — which verify-nightly-provenance.sh explicitly rejects ('a no-op nightly run does not count'). Once main moves past that commit, no future nightly.yml run will ever have that head_sha again either. The result: the exact commit a maintainer just tagged as a release can never pass the normal (non-override) promotion gate, so stable-promoting it (the natural 'cut the tag, then ship it' flow that publish-aur/publish-brew exist for) always requires override_provenance: true — documented in this same workflow as 'EMERGENCY ONLY'. This isn't a one-off: both new jobs inherit the identical flawed gate via the same needs: promote dependency, so the bug reproduces for every stable release, not just once. scripts/resolve-release-version.sh's reachable-tag fallback (comment at resolve-release-version.sh:15-18) only rescues promotions of a LATER commit than the tag — it does not help promoting the tag commit itself, which is the case that hits this permanently.

What the reviewer checked
promote.yml new publish-aur job: 'needs: promote' / 'if: ${{ inputs.target == 'stable' && !inputs.dry_run }}' (identical in publish-brew). promote job's provenance check is scripts/verify-nightly-provenance.sh, default --workflow nightly.yml, requiring smoke-linux-amd64/smoke-linux-kvm conclusion == 'success'. nightly.yml:58-66 skips build+smoke on an already-staged HEAD (which is exactly what a tag-push release.yml run produces) while still advancing the channel — so a nightly.yml run against the tag commit exists but never has passing smoke jobs, permanently failing verify-nightly-provenance for that sha.

This is the re-render. Measured across 600 multi-line comments in this org: 43901 bare LF and 378 CRLF. The CRLF ones are twitchyliquid64's, who writes more review commentary on gominimal/minimal than anyone — so the clause added to make `/review` work would have gone on silently doing nothing for the person most likely to use it. foundry adds `startsWith(body, '/review\r')`, which covers CRLF and a lone CR both; `/reviewed` and `/review-later` stay refused. Raised by minimal-review on gominimal/pkgmgr-rs#793 (medium, 0.55, two personas agreeing). This is the re-render. The deletion it replaces leaned on "a branch cannot exist here unless someone with write pushed it", which is true but is not "the author has write" — opening a PR from a branch somebody else pushed needs only read. CodeRabbit found the counterexample on #1338: `brandonweeks` has `read` and authored two non-draft same-repo PRs. Testing permission admits the private org members `author_association` was refusing and still refuses a read-only author. Falls back to the association test with a warning if the endpoint is unreadable, rather than failing closed and taking the fleet down over a token scope. Both public repos were running no author test at all with comments claiming otherwise. Also fixes the comment path, which kept refusing private org members (gominimal/pkgmgr-rs#793, high, 0.75): their `/review` failed the job-level `if`, so the API check never got to run. CONTRIBUTOR joins that list — a stranger with no commits here is NONE and still refused for free — and a Bot is now refused by name on the comment path so widening it cannot let CodeRabbit start a paid run. CodeRabbit caught it on gominimal/foundry#69 before it ran. foundry now mints a separate App token for that step, scoped to the calling repository and to Administration:read alone, rather than widening this workflow's permission ceiling in every install for one lookup. Also narrows the Bot exemption from "any App" to the two named logins, keeps the rationale comment in generated copies, and fixes two refusal messages that said "PR author" on the comment path. Skipped until the secrets live in each repo's Dependabot store. The author permission check was using `github.token`, which lacks the push access `collaborators/{u}/permission` requires — it would have fallen back on every run. It now mints its own App token, scoped to this repository and Administration:read only, rather than widening this workflow's permission ceiling. Also narrows the Bot exemption to the two named logins. Two reviewers read the endpoint's requirement two ways on foundry#69 — Metadata per the REST reference, or push access per the endpoint page — and it cannot be settled without running it. It now asks for the least that could work, and the comment says the question is open rather than asserting an answer. Every failure mode degrades rather than breaks: an ungranted permission fails the mint, continue-on-error swallows it, the step falls back to github.token, and the association fallback runs with a warning naming the scope to fix. It is not true for a stub caller, where the gate is editable by the PR and the impl is not, so the arm stays and now refuses with the cause named: a dependabot run reads the Dependabot secret store, not Actions secrets, so the token mint cannot succeed. The invariants stay and are easier to find without the provenance around them, as do the measured facts — 12 of 12 dependabot runs failed, 378 CRLF in 600 comments, one author below write in 2431 same-repo PRs. Both were written from what I expected the output to be rather than from the line above. The arm stays because it is one line and the only place naming the cause, which is the argument that actually holds. A dependabot-triggered run cannot read Actions secrets so the mint dies; a `/review` comment is triggered by the commenter, reads secrets normally, and is the one way to get a bump reviewed today. Both files now say so, since the asymmetry reads like an oversight otherwise — it was reported as one. Also drops a comment that narrated its own edit history. The replacement explained the human case and excluded dependabot by login, and never said what happens to the other one — unanswerable from a caller, since the check lives in the impl at a pinned SHA. It does get reviewed, and by name rather than by lookup: the permission endpoint answers `404 gominimal-aw-bot is not a user` for an App, so a lookup-only rule would refuse every App there is. I'd like to see us move to a a process where we can build and smoke packages before we publish them, but this PR is a step in the right direction
The review feedback on #1313 asked for a process to build and smoke packages before publishing. This is the local half: after just pkg-nfpm, just pkg-smoke installs the dist/ artifacts into throwaway distrobox boxes named min-test-{deb,rpm,apk} and asserts the shipped contract — package-manager acceptance with the exact version, every path from packaging/nfpm.yaml, executable binaries on the box's libc (glibc for deb/rpm, musl for apk), and an uninstall round-trip. Boxes are removed even on failure. Distrobox drives everything: no apx (it has no non-interactive exec) and no raw podman, so the boxes stay in one namespace. The package-manager steps run under the box's passwordless sudo. --apparmor installs apparmor in the deb box to exercise the postinstall's parser-present branch and requires the packaged profile to parse; the kernel load is never asserted — an unprivileged box cannot load policy, and kernels without AppArmor must still take a clean install. The CI-native counterpart (a container-matrix smoke lane plus the real AppArmor load on an ubuntu-24.04 runner, which distrobox cannot do) is a deliberate follow-up. The harness stubs distrobox (and fail-loud podman/apx shims) so it runs hermetically via the convention-discovered shell suite.

minimal-review — advisory review
Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope
Large but tracks the stated intent: this is the second review round of CI-owned AUR/Homebrew/deb/rpm/apk distribution, and most of the diff is the round-one findings landing (semver resolution moved into tested scripts, publishers moved behind the stable/dry-run gate, minvmd joining the static-musl build, package.version fallback corrected to 0.5.4). Every hunk traces to that intent; the workflow edits are the frozen-file exception the PR body already flags for CODEOWNERs. No clobber found: the promote.yml/release.yml changes build on the current step structure (the steps.promote.outputs.sha output, the rename-step cd, and the composite action's LIBKRUN_PREFIX GITHUB_ENV export all predate the diff), and stage-release.sh's new --pkg-dir/--pkg-only path reuses the existing manifest/upload machinery instead of growing a separate gcloud call.
Correctness
Clean on every check I could run build-free: all eight scripts/*_test.sh harnesses pass locally; gitleaks finds no secrets; assert-release-version.sh --tag v0.5.4 matches the workspace Cargo.toml; the PKGBUILD and brew templates render fully stamped through render-packaging.sh (empty-variable and &-replacement defenses included); the nfpm lock, the AUR artifact list, and the eight-column components-manifest layout the consumer scripts parse are mutually consistent; package-nfpm.sh verifies downloads against the staged components manifest before chmod/execute; the two unresolved threads already on the PR concern the same promote flow this round reworks, so I did not re-raise them. One finding survives: the deb box's version probe in pkg-smoke.sh cannot match a real dpkg-query output, so the deb smoke can never pass on a real host.
What I could not check
Nothing here needed a Rust compile, but I could not execute dpkg-query (no dpkg on this host) or run the distrobox smoke end-to-end (no container engine); the deb-probe finding therefore rests on the documented --showformat escape semantics (quoted in the finding) rather than an empirical run. The stub harness cannot catch the defect either, since pkg-smoke_test.sh replays canned dpkg-query output.
Verdict
Good change, under budget: the release logic is now scripted, harnessed, and dry-run-rehearsable, and the one real defect found is a single-shell-escape bug in a smoke-tool probe that fails loudly rather than silently. Approve after that one-line fix.
What ran

1. Ran all scripts/*_test.sh harnesses under bash, workspace suite order — exit 0 · self-reported
All pass: assert-release-version (8), resolve-release-version (9), latest-staged-version (6), publish-aur (9), publish-brew (10), render-packaging (8), pkg-smoke (all phrases), plus pre-existing install_test (276) and verify-nightly-provenance (31).
2. gitleaks detect --no-git --source . — exit 0 · self-reported
No leaks over 8.15 MB; a manual rg for PEM keys, PATs, and cloud keys over the diff also clean. The only credentials are
{ secrets.* }workflow references.
3. Byte-level decode of the deb probe plus dpkg-query(1) escape semantics — self-reported
od -con scripts/pkg-smoke.sh:123 shows three backslashes then$; bash collapses to the element stringdpkg-query -W -f '\${Version}\n' minimal. The dpkg-query(1) --showformat rules quoted in the finding are the load-bearing check. Reading/decoding, not a command run.
4. Verified every changed-script cross-reference resolves (grep + targeted reads) — self-reported
steps.promote.outputs.sha exists and is exposed as the promote job output
version; the build-libkrun-static-linux composite action writes LIBKRUN_PREFIX to GITHUB_ENV before dist-build.sh runs; the rename steps keep the pre-existingcd target/<triple>/release; stage-release.sh's manifest rows are exactly 8 ws-separated columns and package-nfpm.sh parses column 8 (src) with a matching 8-column guard; scripts/install-apparmor-profile.sh supports the--checkthe smoke invokes; AUR/brew/nfpm artifact lists match stage-release.sh's component basenames.
5. assert-release-version.sh against the workspace Cargo.toml — exit 0 · self-reported
scripts/assert-release-version.sh --tag v0.5.4 --cargo-toml Cargo.tomlprintspackage.version (0.5.4) matches tag v0.5.4- the release gate's own contract holds.
6. Rendered the packaging templates via render-packaging.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
The Homebrew formula rendered fully stamped with the empty-var/&-defenses in force; publish-aur/publish-brew dry runs render PKGBUILD + formula end to end against file:// fixture remotes with no credentials (covered by the harnesses).

The deb box's version probe can never match a real dpkg-query output. The element is dpkg-query -W -f '\${Version}\n' minimal (byte-verified: bash's double-quote unescaping leaves exactly one backslash before $), and inside the box sh -c passes the single-quoted string verbatim to dpkg-query. In dpkg-query's --showformat language a backslash suppresses the special meaning of the following character - the man page names \\ and $ as the uses - so \$ emits a literal $ and the {Version} after it is plain text; the probe outputs the literal string ${Version}, never the installed version. The grep -qF -- "$want" against the version parsed from the deb filename (e.g. 0.5.3-1) then always misses and the deb box always reports a version mismatch, so pkg-smoke (the pre-publish ritual) can never go green for deb. The harness cannot catch it: pkg-smoke_test.sh answers the probe with canned STUB_DEB_VERSION output. It is a single instance - the rpm probe uses %{VERSION}-%{RELEASE} and the apk probe is fixed-string, both unaffected - so the fix is local to this line. The escape the author added protects $ from bash's double-quoted array expansion, but the single quotes already shield $ where it matters; only that extra-level escape must go.

What the reviewer checked
scripts/pkg-smoke.sh:123 - bytes are
'\\\${Version}\n'inside the double-quoted array; bash collapses them to the element stringdpkg-query -W -f '\${Version}\n' minimal. dpkg-query(1) --showformat: "a backslash before any other character suppresses any special meaning of the following character, which is useful for '\' and '$'", so\$is a literal dollar and${Version}never expands. pkg-smoke_test.sh's distrobox stub replies to thedpkg-queryprobe with the cannedSTUB_DEB_VERSION, so the harness cannot detect this.

Both review bots flagged the deb probe: dpkg-query's --showformat treats a backslash before $ as a literal dollar, so whether the probe worked depended on distrobox argument forwarding stripping the escape — the pre-fix live run passed, but only by accident. Replace the format string entirely: dpkg-query -W's default output is TAB-delimited, so cut -f2 yields the version with no $ or nested quoting to survive the box hop. usage() hard-coded the header line count, so --help also printed the die/note definitions after it; use the same set -euo sentinel form as package-nfpm.sh, which tracks the header however long it grows.
v0.5.4 was tagged 2026-09-02, so the fallback the previous commit left at 0.5.4 names an already-shipped release: a no-.git build (source tarball) would report 0.5.4, which release.yml's assert-version job exists to catch. Same one-line stopgap as before, until #633 makes the field load-bearing.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope — Large, but it matches the stated intent: the first round's defects (brew bin.install shape, dry-run gating, prerelease handling, semver-row hijack, fallback version, renderer edge cases, missing minvmd) are all addressed, publishing logic moved out of the frozen workflows into tested scripts, and the six new scripts/*_test.sh harnesses all pass when run here (build-free, fixture/stub driven). The nfpm packages verify downloaded artifacts against the staged components manifest before use, as the PR body claims.
Clobber — None found: git log on the touched paths shows only this PR's commits, and the workflow hunks replace inline logic with script calls rather than reverting anything.
Correctness — One release-blocking defect: the final commit bumped package.version to 0.5.5 in Cargo.toml without regenerating Cargo.lock, which still records every workspace member at 0.5.4, so every --locked build — just ci/just test, and the new release entrypoint scripts/dist-build.sh that release.yml's build jobs now call — fails until the lock is regenerated. Second: publish-aur.sh stamps digests computed from whatever bytes it downloaded, with no cross-check against the staged components manifest that the nfpm path gained this round; a corrupted/tampered bucket object would ship to AUR users with checksums that verify the bad bytes. Could not verify cargo's stale-lock failure mode by building (builds are out of bounds); it rests on the recorded Cargo.toml/Cargo.lock mismatch plus the author's own earlier in-PR lock updates. One scope note for release docs: the deb/rpm/apk/AUR packages ship minvmd but not the guest payload (kernel/rootfs/initramfs), which minvmd resolves from the data dir and hard-errors on when absent — the brew formula documents this gap, the Linux packages do not.

Verification log
1. Run the seven new scripts/*_test.sh harnesses under bash from the repo root — exit 0 · self-reported
assert-release-version 8/8, latest-staged-version 6/6, render-packaging 8/8, resolve-release-version 9/9, publish-aur 9/9, publish-brew 10/10, pkg-smoke: all assertions passed.
2. grep Cargo.toml package.version and Cargo.lock workspace-member versions — exit 0 · self-reported
Cargo.toml:56 = "0.5.5"; Cargo.lock entries for minimal, minimal-client, minimal-tui, minimald, minvmd, mip, version all read 0.5.4.
3. git show cef95d8 --stat — exit 0 · self-reported
The head commit touches only Cargo.toml (2+/2-) — the 0.5.5 bump did not regenerate Cargo.lock, unlike the earlier in-PR 0.5.4 bump that changed both files together.
4. rg -n locked scripts/dist-build.sh justfile — exit 0 · self-reported
All seven dist-build.sh cargo invocations and the justfile build/test/clippy/test-cross recipes (lines 133, 144, 148, 153, 209, 288, 356, 360, 382-383) use --locked.
5. Read stage-release.sh components table and package-nfpm.sh manifest parse — self-reported
components rows are 8 whitespace columns (component os arch version sha256 kind dest src); package-nfpm.sh keys on cols[4]/cols[7] and refuses to package an artifact with no manifest digest. publish-aur.sh fetches no manifest at all.
6. grep -F for the publish-aur download/stamp loop inside .review/pr.diff — exit 0 · self-reported
Confirmed the curl+sha256sum loop is new-file content in the diff (publish-aur.sh:123-131), so the finding anchors inside the reviewable range.

Cargo.toml now declares package.version = "0.5.5" (final commit cef95d8) but Cargo.lock still records every workspace member at 0.5.4 — the earlier in-PR bump to 0.5.4 regenerated the lock in the same change, so this is a plain miss at head. Every --locked build fails until the lock is regenerated: just ci/just test/just clippy, and the new release entrypoint scripts/dist-build.sh, whose seven cargo build --release --locked invocations the release.yml build jobs now call. The first real tag-push release after this PR therefore fails at the build step — the exact outcome the new assert-version gate exists to prevent, one step later.

The AUR publisher computes each artifact's sha256 from the bytes it just downloaded and stamps those digests into the PKGBUILD, with no cross-check against the staged versions/<semver>/components manifest — the trust root the PR's own narrative gives package-nfpm.sh ("Downloaded artifacts are checked against the staged components manifest … before anything chmods, executes, or packages them"). A corrupted or tampered bucket object would be shipped to every AUR user with checksums that "verify" the bad bytes (makepkg re-checks against the very digests that describe the corruption). Fetching the manifest and comparing each digest before stamping costs one curl and makes the AUR publisher hold the same invariant as its nfpm sibling.

package.version feeds the workspace crates' versions, so the 0.5.5 bump left Cargo.lock recording 0.5.4 and the CI lockfile gate (cargo fetch --locked) rejected the branch on every lane.
Two one-liners from the packaging follow-ups issue: pkg-nfpm's default OUT_DIR (dist/) was landing packages in the worktree as untracked noise, and the PKGBUILD's epoch comment claimed shas sort above semver under vercmp with an example that proves the opposite (0.5.3 > e6cf884) — a digit-leading sha sorts above semver, an alpha-leading one below, and since the published shape cannot be known, epoch=1 covers both.

Scope. The diff delivers on its stated intent: CI-owned AUR/Homebrew publishing, plus deb/rpm/apk packaging and staging, with the previous round's defects fixed at the root (tested scripts instead of inline workflow logic, renderer that refuses half-stamped output, prerelease/stable gating, verify-before-execute on downloads, epoch/symlink details). The CI workflow changes are mechanics on top of exercised scripts; all six new harnesses pass (just test-shell under bash, every *_test.sh exit 0) and the workspace gate (shell_harnesses.rs) is a sound convention-driven runner with honest panic-style failure on unreadable entries.
Clobber. None found. git log on the touched workflows and scripts shows only this PR's own commits (6afa4a8/67b2cd2 and the four packaging fixes); nothing reverts or overwrites a recent merge. Cargo.lock is regenerated to 0.5.5 for all workspace crates with zero stale 0.5.0-rc1 entries.
Correctness. Checked the seams that would break silently: steps.promote does emit sha to GITHUB_OUTPUT so the new job output is wired; the tag-push flow stages the semver row before package-nfpm.sh runs (same job, sequential); PKGBUILD/formula/nfpm source arrays and checksum tokens are mutually consistent and bucket-staged names match; nfpm.yaml's env-expanded fields pair with the driver's exports. assert-release-version matches the CRATES/version build.rs fallback premise. Two gaps are reported: (1) a just test-shell regression — this PR's own dispatch contract is that install_test.sh runs under sh, yet the local recipe force-bashes it; (2) a low-severity operational asymmetry where a pre-convention released version (e.g. 0.5.4, the current newest tag) resolves to exit 0 but has no staged semver row, so the first stable promote in that window fails loudly instead of skipping per the design, and the backfill guidance lags the newest tag.
Not checked (needs a build/run): cargo build/clippy/test were out of scope; I did not execute the real min binary's completion generation, nfpm packaging, or the Homebrew generate_completions_from_executable path, nor the gcloud/pubbucket reads. The verify-nightly-provenance/publish-aur gating interplay on tag-staged shas was raised in a prior branch (promote.yml:273, still open) and is not re-reported here. Except for those two findings, the change is in good shape and ready for the real-machine smoke rather than more code review.
What ran
5 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. ran all scripts/*_test.sh harnesses under bash — exit 0 · self-reported
Executed every harness (assert-release-version, latest-staged-version, pkg-smoke, publish-aur, publish-brew, render-packaging, resolve-release-version, verify-nightly-provenance, install) against the checkout; all exited 0.
2. probe resolve-release-version.sh against the real repo tags — exit 0 · self-reported
Ran "scripts/resolve-release-version.sh --sha HEAD|v0.5.3|v0.5.4". HEAD resolves to 0.5.3 (v0.5.4 is not an ancestor of this branch: git merge-base --is-ancestor fails, 20 commits on the mainline side), v0.5.3 -> 0.5.3, v0.5.4 -> 0.5.4, all exit 0. Confirms the resolution is 'newest released tag reachable', not the PR's fallback row.
3. confirm Cargo.lock is regenerated for the 0.5.5 bump — exit 0 · self-reported
grep on Cargo.lock: all 7 workspace crates (minimal, minimal-client, minimal-tui, minimald, minvmd, mip, version) at 0.5.5; zero remaining 0.5.0-rc1 entries; lock regenerated by 43dfa70. The open Cargo.toml:56 thread's claim (lock still at 0.5.4) is stale at head.
4. read promote.yml, release.yml, stage-release.sh, dist-build.sh, package-nfpm.sh, publish-aur.sh, publish-brew.sh, justfile, nfpm.yaml, PKGBUILD template — self-reported
Read every touched workflow/script surrounding the hunks: verified steps.promote writes sha to GITHUB_OUTPUT (promote.yml:227) so outputs.version is real; tag-push flow stages the semver row before package-nfpm runs in the same job; distro artifacts are renamed/verified against the components manifest; PKGBUILD source/sha arrays match publish-aur's exported tokens.
5. compare just test-shell and the Rust harness gate's interpreter dispatch — self-reported
shell_harnesses.rs implements declared_interpreter() from each harness shebang and names install_test.sh (#!/bin/sh) as the reason; the new justfile test-shell recipe force-runs every harness with
bash. Read-only comparison, no exit.

just test-shell runs every harness under bash "$t", but the same PR's workspace gate (crates/common/tests/shell_harnesses.rs) deliberately dispatches each harness with the interpreter its shebang declares — and its docstring names scripts/install_test.sh (a #!/bin/sh POSIX harness) as the exact reason: "running it under bash would not reproduce that contract". The two entrypoints this PR adds for the same harness set therefore disagree: the local recipe tests install_test.sh under bash (where an sh-ism passes), while just test/CI tests it under sh and would fail the PR. The fallback branch resolves the NEWEST released tag reachable from the promoted sha and exits 0 — but publish-aur then fetches artifacts from versions// in the bucket, and any release cut before the semver-row convention has no such row (the PR's own text and first-round review verify versions/0.5.3/components is a 404; the justfile note "every release up to and including 0.5.3" is also stale because v0.5.4 has since shipped under the old flow). The nightly that gets promoted sits after the tag commit, so the AUR publish was a silent permanent skip (and withgitmissing from thearchlinux:base-develcontainer, a swallowed exit 127).scripts/resolve-release-version.shuses the tag on the sha itself, else the newest releasedv*tag reachable from it. The pkg upload goes throughstage-release.sh --pkg-dir/--pkg-onlyinstead of an inlinegcloud storage cp. The default promote target filters to commit rows, so the newversions/<semver>/rows cannot hijack it and fail the run after the approval gate.PATH. Every staged row carries the static-musl build, so the package stays self-contained.componentsmanifest (the SHA-256sstage-release.shwrote and the installer trusts) before anything chmods, executes, or packages them.bin.install ... => "min"(the previous form created abin/min/directory and installed no executable), stage blocks use relative paths, and the trimmed libkrun dylib ships into the formula's ownlib/, which is the only place minvmd's@loader_path/../librpath can reach.patsub_replacementis disabled so a literal&in MAINTAINER cannot re-inject its token, and any surviving@@fails the run.package.versionfalls back to0.5.4(next unreleased) instead of the already-shipped0.5.3, the exact wrong-tarball-version failureassert-versionexists to catch.dist-build/pkg-nfpmare[linux]-scoped withquote()d arguments.New harnesses run under
