2026-09-17: now docs/specs/20-spec-spec-hash-epoch1/ (renumbered by Norrie). Bound to architecture.md D3.1 (the keyspace contract); every requirement carries a tier: (EPOCH-001 T3 target with its Kani harness as today's evidence; 003/004 T2; 002/006/007/009 T1; 005/008 T0); verify pointers in the repo's one-test form. New EPOCH-009: epoch selection is data — the sealed index declares its epoch and consumers follow their pinned index — which D3.1 fixes and the original criteria (and this spec's first draft) stated as "config-plumbed at one call site"; that is now the producing side only. The decision-5 CRITICAL is resolved by D3.1; decision 1 (tests hashed?) remains the one open question. Epic inbox#583 updated to match.
Spec for gominimal/inbox#583, drafted with spec-author 0.3.0 — second full dogfood, and the first spec to climb the proof-tier ladder past T1.
8 requirements with recorded tier: lines: three at T2 with named Kani harnesses (bounded injectivity, round-trip, the nine epoch-0 collision-witness refutations), one carrying the T3 proof: line as the stated Lean/Aeneas target (held by Kani until it lands, per the roadmap), three at T1, two at T0 scenarios (domain-separation/width, golden pins for both epochs).
Security section names the axiom explicitly (Blake3 collision resistance) — the theorem is conditional and says so.
Decisions 1 and 5 settled in the spec (round 7f): tests stay outside the canonical form with a write-guard (EPOCH-010); additive evolution is reserved-tag with an unknown tag a hard error (EPOCH-007, EPOCH-021). The two remaining open questions are the Lean theorem for EPOCH-001 (MEDIUM) and the measured harness bounds (LOW).
Rollout section present (this one IS infra-touching: the flip is a scheduled world rebuild — operational lessons referenced).

Explanation
The title follows Conventional Commit form (docs(specs): ...) and names the main change: a new draft specification for spec-hash epoch 1 (an injective BuildSpec encoding). It matches the added spec document. It is slightly long at 80 characters and includes some detail ("machine-checked") that the spec only partly supports, since injectivity is at T2 and the Lean proof is an open target, but the title still refers to the primary change.

Converted to the ratified format (gominimal/foundry#35 template): EARS-only, tier by lines present (Kani harnesses ride the verify: target names — the lint recognizes verify/property/proof only), ratified frontmatter (id: EPOCH), invariants with covered-by, Non-goals with destinations, full Rollout section retained (infra: deploy/rollback/blast-radius — rollback is a config flip, epoch-0 stays valid). Verified: 0 findings from foundry's own spec_lint.py. The T3 proof: line stays as the stated Lean target; the linter will report it unresolved under --repo-root until the proof lands, which is honest and advisory.

e.md now has D3.1, the keyspace contract (injective over closure meaning; epochs by domain-separated context at 32 bytes; epoch selection as data; rotation as a migration class; additive evolution). This spec is epoch 1's delivery of it and now says so: arch: points at D3.1, Context restates the contract, Design reasoning maps its four commitments to requirements one-to-one.
One real change fell out: D3.1 says epoch selection is data — a sealed Registry Cache Index records the epoch its keys were computed under, and a consumer computes lookup keys under the epoch its pinned index declares, never a global setting. The epic's criterion 5, EPOCH-005, the security invariant and Rollout all said "config-plumbed at one call site" for everyone. That is now the producing side only; consumers follow their indices, which is exactly what keeps historical pins valid through the flip without dual-publishing. New EPOCH-009 binds it; inbox#583's criterion 5 and References are updated to match.
Also: every requirement carries a tier: (the 8× P009 from before), verify pointers use the repo's one-test form against the graph crate, the decision-5 CRITICAL is resolved by D3.1, and status: is gone per foundry#89. spec-lint is down to one advisory note: decision 1 (are tests hashed?), which the architecture leaves to the epoch spec and is ours to decide in minimal#1246.
Verdict. The reasoning is the strongest part: alternatives are named with the argument against each (TLV over varints, cold rebuild over dual-hash, no conditional emission, index-declared epoch over a global setting), and the tiers climb for the right reasons. What holds it back is definition: every proof-tier claim quantifies over "canonical specs", "bounded specs" and "the domain-separated context", and none is established in the document. The CRITICAL open question (are tests hashed?) is the question of what "canonical" means, so the requirements sit on top of it rather than beside it. Two smaller drifts: the five stories are paraphrased rather than transcribed, and SubsetHasher, which the epic puts in criterion 5 and in witness class 9, reaches no requirement.
Lint state. 12 findings, all the expected kinds: 10 × P004 (named tests not written yet), 1 × P006 (the Lean proof file), 1 × Q002 (the CRITICAL marker). Nothing mechanical left over.

Findings
D — Defined. "canonical" carries 001 ("encode canonically distinct specs"), the Success line ("no two distinct canonical specs"), and invariant 1, and is never defined. The document gestures at it ("the same meaning under the epoch's canonicalization") but the canonicalization is only partly recoverable from 002 (sorted edges) and 006 (numbers). The open question reads: "decision 1 — are tests hashed? Changes which spec edits rotate keys." That is the definition being asked for. Same shape for 003's "bounded specs" and 001/003's "the bounded length domains of minimal#1246's verification plan": the bounds live in a tracker, not the spec, and a harness line's content is its bound. And 005's "the domain-separated context": a second implementation must produce the same key, so the context string is part of the contract.
S — Stories. All five differ from the epic. One example — epic: "I want the cache key to be an injective function of the spec's meaning, so that no two distinct specs can share a key and cache poisoning by collision is impossible by construction"; spec: "SO THAT collision-based cache poisoning is impossible by construction". The dropped clause is the one that binds. **Roles:** names real roles.
T — Tier. 005 is at T0 with no property:, yet invariant 3 lists it under covered by:. 001 claims T3 in a repository with no Lean project; allowed, but the document should state that cost rather than only "Kani holds the property until it lands". 003's harness bound is not stated.
F — Faithful. Criterion 5: "The producing side … flips at a single config-plumbed call site; SubsetHasher switches in the same change." No requirement binds SubsetHasher, and witness class 9 is its collision family. Criterion 8 names a tag-uniqueness harness; 007's property covers unknown tags, not uniqueness. 002 narrows criterion 2 ("equivalent specs encode identically — in particular, permuting dependency order") to the permutation case; defensible, unstated.
O — Observable. 007's second clause, "a new optional field SHALL reuse epoch 1 only when its absence means epoch-1 semantics", is a rule for future authors, not a behaviour a test observes. D3.1 already states it.
C — Consistent scope. Success and invariant 1 say "can[not] share a cache key" / "never assign … the same cache key". D3.1 is explicit that the key-level guarantee is computational, and 001 says so itself. The prose promises more than the requirement.
N — Non-goals. "The slots feature: its own design" and "the formal-verification roadmap" have no link; the other three do.
L — First slice. The codec plus its harnesses and pins is end to end for the verification engineer, but the slice does not name what a person runs and watches.
Fixes, by leverage
A definitions paragraph in Context: canonical spec (what is in, what is out, including the tests answer), the bounded domains with numbers, the context string. Settles D on 001/003/004/005, T on 003, and C.
Resolve decision 1.
Re-transcribe the stories from the epic. Settles S.
One requirement for SubsetHasher, and tag uniqueness in 007's property. Settles F.
Give 005 a property: or drop it from invariant 3's covered by:. Settles T.
Soften Success and invariant 1 to "except through a hash collision"; link the two non-goals; name the first-slice observer; move 007's future-author clause to Design reasoning.
House style to copy: 004 — a finite named domain, one harness per class, its source cited.

spec-lint (run with --repo-root) reports the missing arch_sha: field (the arch: link is pinned to a sha, but the template wants the field too), plus the test and proof targets that don't exist yet, which is expected before the codec lands. The frontmatter also has a status: line, and the template says specs don't carry one.
CodeRabbit's two threads on this head are still open. No commit has followed them. On decision 4, D3.1 already settles the question: "nothing is dual-published, and the catalog rebuilds cold". The open question and the migration non-goal can cite D3.1 and close, instead of leaving dual hashing open until flip time.

As written, the round-trip can't hold for the original spec. The encoding only carries the canonical form: BuildSpec also has attrs, tests and from (crates/graph/src/builds.rs), which the encoder never sees, and EPOCH-002 and EPOCH-006 make encode discard dependency order and the sign of -0.0. So decode(encode(x)) == x fails for any spec that has attrs or tests, an unsorted dep list or a -0.0. Could EPOCH-003 and its property say decode(encode(x)) == canon(x) over bounded specs instead? Adding canon(canon(x)) == canon(x) as well would make the canonical form a defined function, not just a definition in prose.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Still open at 5822a3a: EPOCH-003 still reads "back to the original spec" with decode(encode(x)) == x, so it fails for any spec with attrs, tests, unsorted deps or -0.0. The new container text also leans on EPOCH-003 for containers, which makes the canonical-form wording (== canon(x), plus canon(canon(x)) == canon(x)) more pressing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken as you wrote it: EPOCH-003 now decodes to the canonical form, property decode(encode(x)) == canon(x) plus canon(canon(x)) == canon(x), and the container round-trip is its own sub-bullet (epoch1_container_roundtrip_bounded) rather than an inference.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken in an earlier round and standing at head: EPOCH-003 is decode(encode(x)) == canon(x) with canon(canon(x)) == canon(x), over bounded specs, and the terms define the canonical form (the epoch-0 encoder's fields, edges as a set, numbers normalised, tests outside).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
EPOCH-012 assumes a consumer's index comes from one pin, but rcache doesn't always build it that way. new_any_closure_union unions the upstream closure with the sideload closures, and CommitIndex falls back to the root index when the per-commit snapshot is missing (crates/rcache/src/remote.rs). Take an upstream pinned before the flip (epoch 0) and a sideload pinned after it (epoch 1). The union then holds both epochs, and nothing says which epoch keys a sideload spec whose closure includes upstream specs. The root-index fallback is also the global "current" index that D3.1 rules out. Suggest requiring every index unioned for one lookup to declare the same epoch, refused otherwise like EPOCH-009's mixed-file case, and saying whether the root fallback survives the flip.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Still open at 5822a3a: EPOCH-012 is unchanged. Nothing yet requires every index unioned for one lookup (new_any_closure_union) to declare the same epoch, and the spec still doesn't say whether the root-index fallback in CommitIndex survives the flip. The new container reasoning ("an index declares one epoch, so a mixed container cannot be sealed") rests on the same gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
EPOCH-012 gains two sub-bullets: a lookup that reads several indexes as one (new_any_closure_union, or CommitIndex's root-index fallback) is refused when two of them declare different epochs, naming both; and an empty index declares no epoch, constrains no union, and a lookup whose every index is empty uses the consumer's own epoch. The container reasoning no longer leans on the gap: EPOCH-014 refuses a member of another epoch outright.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken: EPOCH-012 now has the IF sub-bullet that refuses a lookup over several indexes declaring different epochs (an upstream with its sideloads), and, since round 7, a separate WHILE for the per-commit snapshot and its root fallback (withheld, so a miss rather than a refusal). The root index is no longer a global current index; a lookup follows its pinned index's epoch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This test can't sit in graph. rcache depends on graph (crates/rcache/Cargo.toml), so graph can't read an index's flags. Index selection lives in rcache (new_any_configured). A graph test can only check a function that is handed the epoch, which leaves untested the part this requirement is about: reading the epoch from the pinned index. Suggest moving the verify line to -p rcache, next to EPOCH-009's test.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Still open at 5822a3a: the verify line is still cargo nextest run -p graph epoch_follows_pinned_index. rcache still depends on graph, so the test belongs in -p rcache next to EPOCH-009's.
Added the container section (5822a3a): EPOCH-013 (canonically distinct containers encode distinctly, with minimal#1331's pinned env_vars witness refuted as a sub-requirement) and EPOCH-014 (members enter by key under the container's epoch, as a set), plus the container canonical form in the terms, a story, the D3.1 mapping, design reasoning on why the ContainerHasher call site must flip with SpecHasher/SubsetHasher, and a non-goal that points publication of OCI Archives at build-servers#371. Also merged main so the spec's references to ContainerHasher resolve. spec-lint: only P004 (tests not yet written) and the pre-existing P006 on the Lean path. The architecture side (D3.1 binding the Container Spec Hash, the Registry Cache Index definition) is listed in build-servers#371 as a gominimal/arch follow-up.

The new commit adds the container key (EPOCH-013/014) but doesn't touch the points from the last round. All three inline threads are still open (I've replied in each). The body points are also still open: the frontmatter keeps status: and has no arch_sha:, and decision 4 is still an open NEEDS CLARIFICATION, although D3.1 and the Rollout section already settle it as a cold rebuild. Two new notes on the container harnesses are inline.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
A bounded container takes bounded specs as members, but members enter the container's canonical form only as their 32-byte keys (ContainerHasher::encode sorts and dedups graph.spec_hash(..)). Bounding over specs means kani_epoch1_container_injectivity_bounded has to run Blake3 symbolically to get from member to key, which Kani won't finish in practice. It's also a weaker claim than the encoding needs. Suggest a bounded container takes up to 3 arbitrary 32-byte member keys, so the harness proves injectivity of the encoding over the key set directly.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: a bounded container now has up to 3 arbitrary 32-byte member keys, and the definition says why (members enter the canonical form as keys, so the harness ranges over keys and never runs the hash symbolically). EPOCH-013's harness note follows.

This says EPOCH-003 and EPOCH-007 cover container encodings, but neither requirement does as written. EPOCH-003's property and harness range over bounded specs only, and EPOCH-007's harness doesn't mention container tags. So nothing checks container round-trip or unknown-tag rejection on a container encoding. Either extend those two properties and harnesses to bounded containers, or add a container sub-bullet to each with its own verify line.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Each now has its own bullet: EPOCH-003 gets a container round-trip sub-bullet with its own harness, and EPOCH-007's harness is exhaustive over tag bytes in spec and in container position. The reasoning paragraph points at them instead of claiming coverage.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken: containers have their own requirements now. EPOCH-016 is the container round-trip with its own harness (unwind 33), and EPOCH-007's harness covers tag uniqueness and unknown-tag rejection in container position as well as spec position.
…r lookup, containers by key
From review (#1305). EPOCH-003 decodes to the canonical form (`== canon(x)`,
idempotent), with a container sub-bullet of its own; EPOCH-007's harness
covers container position and epoch 1 emits no tag its decoder does not
know (a new tag is a new epoch; the story and the reasoning say what
"additive" means and no longer promise the last breaking change);
EPOCH-012 moves its verify line to rcache, refuses a lookup that unions
indexes of two epochs, and says what an empty index declares; bounded
containers range over up to 3 member keys, not specs; EPOCH-014 refuses a
member of another epoch; EPOCH-015 binds the container key to the epoch-1
context; the injectivity claims speak of encodings, with equal keys only
through a Blake3 collision; decision 4 is settled as the cold rebuild the
rollout already prescribes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 4 (3aed53a) answers every open thread; each has its reply. Karl's five stay open for him. Three of the edits are decisions rather than wording, called out so they get looked at on purpose: decision 4 is settled as the cold rebuild the Rollout section already prescribes; the "last breaking keyspace change" promise is dropped in favour of "an epoch-1 reader reads every epoch-1 encoding, a new tag is a new epoch", since an unknown-tag hard error cannot give forward compatibility; and EPOCH-015 binds the container key to the epoch-1 context as EPOCH-005 binds a spec key.
Round 5 corrects one thing from round 4 against gominimal/arch D3.1 (unchanged since the sha this spec pins): the additive-evolution rule is D3.1's again (reserved tags, absent-means-epoch-1), with the reasoning spelling out that it is a promise about keys, not readers. The other three design calls from round 4 stand. D3.1's four commitments each map to requirements, EPOCH-015 included now.

…s record's, rollback flips
From review (#1305 round 5). A lookup whose every index is empty computes
no key (there is no epoch to compute one under); a container member's
epoch is the one its index record declares, handed to the hasher with the
key; and rollback is stated as the reverse flip it is, with the root
index rolling back alongside the producers so no post-rollback snapshot
unions with an epoch-1 fallback.

…ip reseals the root index
From review (#1305 round 6). The container round-trip is a requirement of
its own, EPOCH-016, since it carries its own tier, verify, property and
harness. Deploy says the root index is resealed under epoch 1 in the cycle
that seals the first epoch-1 snapshot, with the fallback withheld until
then, so the flip shows misses and never the refusal EPOCH-012 would
otherwise raise. Rollback schedules no catalog rebuild; an entry that
exists only under an epoch-1 key misses and rebuilds on its own.

… after the key
minimal-review on round 7: the record is key (0..32), flags (32..36), sha256 (36..68), so the
refusal at the flags field comes after the key bytes and before the sha256 bytes, which is what
the existing harness asserts (cursor at 36).

…ients at the reading release
minimal-review on round 7b: an older client refuses the first epoch-1 index. The Rollout now says
so beside the promise, and names why the reading release ships first and the flip waits for it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 7c (7d2b5f6): minimal-review's finding on round 7b. The Rollout's no-refusals promise now names the clients it holds for (at or after the reading release) and says what an older client does with the first epoch-1 index. One paragraph; no requirement changed.
…t for all time
minimal-review on round 7c: EPOCH-007 kept 0xF0-0xFF unassigned "in epoch 1" while EPOCH-021 lets an
additive field take a reserved tag, so the first additive field would fail EPOCH-007's test. The
requirement now says what the test pins: no reserved tag is assigned at the epoch-1 seal, and an
additive field draws its tag from that reserve after it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 7d (41e2d4a): minimal-review's finding on 7c. EPOCH-007 is restated as what its test pins (no reserved tag assigned at the epoch-1 seal), with the reserve named as where an additive field (EPOCH-021) takes its tag afterwards. One requirement's wording; no tier or verify line changed.
…erty, the two flip refusals
minimal-review on round 7d. EPOCH-004 refutes classes 7 and 8 the other way round (one spec, one
key: width-independent, and negative zero with zero) rather than as pairs, and the catalog intro
says so. EPOCH-011's property no longer reads an epoch back from a key (EPOCH-014 says it carries
none): the subset key is derived under the spec key's context and encoding. The Rollout names the
two refusals a mid-flip can force (EPOCH-012 mixed-epoch union, EPOCH-014 cross-epoch member) and
how the one-call-site flip ends them.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 7e (f8fb987): minimal-review's three findings on 7d. EPOCH-004 refutes the catalog's two one-spec classes (platform width, negative zero) as one output rather than as pairs, with the intro corrected; EPOCH-011's property no longer reads an epoch back from a key; the Rollout names the two refusals a mid-flip can force and how the one-call-site flip ends them. No tier or verify line changed.
…ed, not left open
minimal-review on round 7e: EPOCH-010 fixes tests outside the canonical form and the design text
binds it, while the PR body still called decision 1 the open question and Open questions did not
list it. The section now says decisions 1 and 5 of minimal#1246 are settled here (EPOCH-010;
EPOCH-007 and EPOCH-021), and that a flip of either is a new revision, not an amendment.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 7f (cf1fd08): minimal-review's finding on 7e. Open questions states decisions 1 and 5 as settled in the spec (EPOCH-010; EPOCH-007 and EPOCH-021) rather than leaving them implied; the PR body's September summary is being refreshed to match.
Three impacts from gominimal/arch#157 on this spec and on decision 4 of #1246:
EPOCH-009 / EPOCH-012. The per-commit index goes away, so the epoch is declared in the registry commit itself, for example spec_hash_epoch in the registry's root minimal.toml (absent means 0).
Every link in a resolved chain must declare the same epoch, or resolution is refused, which carries EPOCH-012's union rule forward.
The signed release attestation repeats the epoch, and the verifier checks it.
Epoch 1 gates the new verification scheme. Release attestations are only ever signed at epoch 1 or later, so nothing gets signed under epoch 0's known collisions. A minimum accepted epoch in the trust root retires epoch 0.
Decision 4: carry forward instead of rebuilding cold.
For each artifact, the producer evaluates the spec its provenance names (repo, commit, package, arch) under epoch 1, and attests the existing bytes under the resulting key.
It processes dependencies first. It carries an artifact forward only if its provenance lists complete dependency sha256 values that match what was carried forward for those dependencies (build-servers#434, item B). Anything else is rebuilt.
This is valid for non-reproducible builds, and deriving the new key from what the artifact was actually built from stops epoch-0 collisions carrying over.
…ip sites
EPOCH-004 bounded every witness harness at unwind 9 for 8-byte strings, but the class 9 witness
carries a 32-byte parent key and needs the 33 EPOCH-001 uses. The design reasoning said the
producing side flips at one site while the container section names three; it now says three sites
behind one config value.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…alue moves three sites
EPOCH-014 now says what a container's epoch is (the producing side's configured epoch, the same
value that selects the spec and subset encoders; epoch 1 after the flip, which EPOCH-015 derives
under) and that an epoch-0 container key is one no index records. Rollout no longer says "one call
site": one config value moves the three encoder sites together (minimal-foundry's two threads).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…t names the converse classes
Two review findings on r3. EPOCH-015 said every container key is derived under the epoch-1 context,
while EPOCH-014 and the rollout keep epoch-0 container keys before the flip; a test written from
EPOCH-015 alone would fail on those. It is now conditional on the container's epoch, as EPOCH-014.
The context said each of the nine witness classes is a pair of specs with one key; the catalog has
classes 7 and 8 as one spec with more than one key, and the sentence now says so.

Re-review at 1f59a2d73.
Verdict. The format is close to ready, and the points from my 10-29 review are mostly fixed. Three substantive gaps remain:
The container work has no source. Five container requirements and a container story come from neither the epic nor D3.1.
The spec does not define the encoding. D3.1 says each epoch spec defines its encoding: field enumeration, canonicalization and tag layout. This spec gives canonicalization only. It defines the fields by pointing at the epoch-0 encoder, and the tag layout exists only as golden digests.
Two requirements are wrong as written. EPOCH-015 is unconditional and contradicts EPOCH-014 and Rollback. EPOCH-012's fallback sub-bullet says every withheld lookup is a miss.
The Design reasoning is the strongest part: every rejected alternative has its reason. My changes-requested review from 10-29 stays in place for fixes 1, 2 and 5 below.
Lint state:spec-lint reports 21 findings, all P004 (the named tests do not exist yet). This is normal before implementation. just lint-prose reports 85 errors and 62 warnings. On 10-29 it reported 66 and 51.

Document criteria
S ✕: Two stories are reworded from the epic, and one story is not in the epic.
R ✓: Each alternative has its reason: varints, dual publishing, dual hashing and the signed-statement field. Generality is answered with content.
N ~: Three non-goals point to #1109, which is closed as completed.
L ✓: The first slice is a codec with golden pins and a Kani lane. A person runs epoch1_golden_pins and watches it pass.
C ~: Success claims an unbounded machine check. The spec also does not define the encoding that D3.1 expects it to define.
Findings
S, F: the container scope comes from neither the epic nor D3.1. The spec has this story:
AS A security engineer I WANT the Container Spec Hash to carry the same guarantee as the package key … (D3.1, AT2)
The epic (https://github.com/gominimal/inbox/issues/583) has five stories and none of them mentions containers. No acceptance criterion mentions containers either. D3.1 also covers only the package key:
The Package Build Spec Hash (glossary) keys the Registry Cache Index (D3)
AT2 makes the scope defensible. The epic must still carry it, or EPOCH-013, 014, 015, 016 and 020 have no criterion. Two other stories also differ from the epic:
Security engineer. The epic says "I want the cache key to be an injective function … so that no two distinct specs can share a key". The spec says "I WANT the encoding to be an injective function … SO THAT two keys agree only when Blake3 collides".
Release manager. The epic says "so that this is the last breaking keyspace change I ever schedule". The spec says "SO THAT no existing key ever changes again and the only keyspace change I schedule is a new epoch (D3.1)".
The spec's wording is more correct in both cases. Update the epic so that the two texts agree.
C, D: the spec does not define the encoding that D3.1 delegates to it. D3.1 says:
The encoding the hash is computed over — field enumeration, canonicalization, tag layout — is spec-level detail, defined per epoch in its own spec
The spec says:
A spec's canonical form is the set of fields the epoch-0 encoder covers.
So the field list lives in LegacyEncoder (crates/graph/src/spec_hasher.rs). The tag layout exists only as golden digests that the codec PR will produce. A second client cannot compute epoch-1 keys from this document. EPOCH-001, 003 and 010 depend on "canonical form". EPOCH-017 ("length-frame every output name") names one piece of the layout without the rest. Settle it one of two ways:
Enumerate the fields and tags.
State that the codec module and the golden pins are the normative definition, and say why that meets D3.1.
D: "bounded spec" contradicts the edge definition. The spec says:
Every bounded spec has … Its dependency depth is at most 2.
It also says:
An edge of a spec is identified by the epoch-1 key of the dependency it names
If an edge is a 32-byte key, the encoder never sees dependency depth. So either the depth bound is vacuous, or the harness computes Blake3 symbolically. The container definition rules symbolic Blake3 out ("never runs the hash symbolically"). EPOCH-001 and 003 depend on this definition. One sentence settles it: say whether edge keys are symbolic 32-byte values, as the container member keys are.
U ✕: EPOCH-015 is unconditional.
WHEN the system computes a container key THE SYSTEM SHALL derive it under the epoch-1 context
EPOCH-014 says "Before the flip a container key is an epoch-0 key". Rollback also returns the producers to epoch 0. As written, EPOCH-015 requires the epoch-1 context in both cases. Scope it the way EPOCH-005 is scoped ("an epoch-1 spec key").
O: EPOCH-012's fallback sub-bullet overstates the result.
THE SYSTEM SHALL withhold the fallback and answer a lookup from the snapshot alone, so the lookup is a miss and never a refusal.
A key that is in the epoch-1 snapshot is a hit. The intended rule is that a key found only in the root index is a miss, and no lookup is a refusal.
O (printed text): three refusals do not say what the person reads.
EPOCH-009: "refuse the whole file"
EPOCH-012: "refuse the lookup and name both indexes"
EPOCH-014: "refuse to seal the container and name the member"
Each requirement names the condition but not the content. Design reasoning says the old client "asks for an update", but no requirement states that. For each refusal, state what the message tells the person and what action fixes it. EPOCH-009 also writes into the flags field. That is a contract with released clients, so say that this is the reason it is fixed.
O: EPOCH-014 still mixes rationale into the requirement. This text is reasoning, not behaviour, and belongs in Design reasoning:
Before the flip a container key is an epoch-0 key; no index records one today, and the epoch-0 container witness (EPOCH-013) is a property of that encoding, not of a stored key.
U, D, F: the scope of EPOCH-019 is not defined.
every record format that embeds a SpecHash
AC4 lists six formats: "index records, snapshots, closures, provenance subjects, events, and object names". Object names and events are not obviously "record formats". Name the set, or say that the set is AC4's list.
D, F: EPOCH-010's write-guard has no source and no enforcement point.
IF a test writes into the output tree THEN THE SYSTEM SHALL fail the test.
This rule comes from #1246 decision 1, not from the epic. It is also the condition that makes the tests exclusion safe: a test that mutates the output tree gives two outputs under one key. Two things are missing:
A definition of "output tree".
Where the guard is enforced. It must be outside the test's own process.
O: EPOCH-021 constrains a field that does not exist yet. Say what epoch1_absent_field_is_byte_identical adds to run the check, for example a test-only field under a reserved tag.
N: three destinations are closed. "Wire varint work", "The Lean proof" and client-side bundle verification all point to #1109, which is closed as completed. Point them at open issues.
C: Success claims more than the proof delivers.
two distinct canonical specs share a cache key only through a Blake3 collision, and a machine checks that property.
The machine checks bounded specs only. Context says so, but Success does not.
Fixes, in order of how much each one unblocks
Add the container scope to the epic as an acceptance criterion and a story, and make the two reworded stories match. This settles S and EPOCH-013, 014, 015, 016 and 020.
Enumerate the fields and the tag layout, or name the codec module and golden pins as normative. This settles C and EPOCH-001, 003, 010 and 017.
Settle the depth bound against edge-as-key. This settles EPOCH-001 and 003.
State the printed content of the three refusals. This settles EPOCH-009, 012 and 014.
Remaining small items: the EPOCH-010 guard placement, the EPOCH-021 test field, updated:, and the prose lint.
Two parts are good models for the fixes. EPOCH-005, together with the inline definition of "epoch-1 context", is the right way to pin an interop contract. The signed-statement paragraph in Design reasoning (L412–423) is the right shape for a rejected alternative.
Round 4 (897e7c8): EPOCH-015 is conditional on the container's epoch being 1, as EPOCH-014 is, and the context sentence names classes 7 and 8 as one spec with more than one key (minimal-foundry's two findings on r3). Karl's five threads from r2 are answered in r3 and wait on him.
Mike's comment needs an answer before this merges, and my 11-04 review didn't cover it. The spec delivers D3.1, so D3.1 decides this. D3.1 still says the catalog rebuilds cold, while arch#157 removes the per-commit index, moves the epoch into the registry commit and replaces the cold rebuild with carry-forward.
Let's hold EPOCH-009, EPOCH-012, Rollout and decision 4 until that's settled in arch, rather than merge sections we expect to rewrite. The named tests don't exist yet, so changing these now is cheap.
Mike, please confirm whether arch#157 is the direction and whether D3.1 changes with it. If D3.1 stands, say so here.
Bryan, please keep going on the fixes that don't depend on this: the epic update, the encoding definition, the depth bound, EPOCH-014's refusal text, EPOCH-019, the non-goals and the small items. Leave the EPOCH-009 and EPOCH-012 parts of fixes 4 and 6 until D3.1 is settled, since they may change. Please also reply to Mike's three points here, including anything you disagree with.
…keys
Norrie's 2026-11-04 fixes that do not wait on D3.1 and arch#157.
- Fix 2: Context defines the epoch-1 encoding. It lists the spec, subset
and container fields, what stays outside, the normal forms and the TLV
layout. The codec module and the EPOCH-008 pins are normative for the
tag byte values and the field order, with the reason that meets D3.1.
- Fix 3: a bounded spec's edge keys are arbitrary 32-byte values, like
container member keys. The depth bound is gone from the definition and
from the EPOCH-001 and EPOCH-003 harness lines.
- Fix 4, EPOCH-014 only: the refusal says what the message names and how
to fix it. The rationale moves to Design reasoning.
- Fix 7: EPOCH-019 names AC4's six formats.
- Fix 8: client-side bundle verification points at minimal#2736.
- Fix 9: EPOCH-021 says what its test adds, Success says the machine
check is over bounded specs, and updated is 2026-11-05.
- Mike's point 2: a non-goal and one Design reasoning sentence point at
arch#157 for gating signing on epoch 1.
EPOCH-009, EPOCH-012, Rollout and decision 4 are untouched until D3.1
settles.

Round 5 (77584ab): Norrie's fixes from the 11-04 review that don't wait on D3.1, numbered as in his review.
The epic. This round's script updates gominimal/inbox#583. Its security engineer and release manager stories now read as the spec's do. It gains the container story and a tenth acceptance criterion for the container key, which is the source for EPOCH-013, 014, 015, 016 and 020. Its spec reference now says EPOCH-001..021.
Context now defines the epoch-1 encoding: the spec, subset and container fields, what stays outside the canonical form, the normal forms and the TLV layout. The tag byte values, the field order and the byte layout of a number are left to the codec module and the EPOCH-008 pins, which are normative for those bytes. The section says why that meets D3.1: the spec fixes the fields, normal forms and framing that injectivity rests on, and the pins fix the remaining bytes at the seal.
A bounded spec's edge keys are arbitrary 32-byte values, as container member keys are, so there is no dependency depth to bound. The depth bound is gone from the definition and from the EPOCH-001 and EPOCH-003 harness lines.
EPOCH-014's refusal now says what the message names (the container, the member and both epochs) and what fixes it (reseal the member's index under the container's epoch, then seal the container again). Its "before the flip" rationale moved to Design reasoning.
EPOCH-019 names AC4's six formats: index records, snapshots, closures, provenance subjects, events and object names.
Client-side bundle verification now points at minimal#2736. Wire varint work and the Lean proof still point at minimal#1109, because neither has an open issue yet. They move once those issues exist.
EPOCH-021 says what its test adds: a test-only optional field under a tag from the reserve, present only in the test build. Success now says the machine check covers bounded specs. updated: is 2026-11-05. The EPOCH-010 guard placement is not in this round, because where the guard runs depends on how a build_test test runs inside the build sandbox, and that needs a decision rather than a guess. spec-lint reports only the 21 P004 findings. Prose lint on the file is down to 92 errors and 62 warnings, from 96 and 64 at 897e7c8 on the same Vale setup.
From Mike's point 2, the spec also gains a non-goal and one Design reasoning sentence that point at gominimal/arch#157 for gating signing on epoch 1.
Held until D3.1 settles, per Norrie's comment of 11-05: EPOCH-009, EPOCH-012, Rollout and decision 4, which covers the EPOCH-009 and EPOCH-012 parts of fixes 4 and 6. None of them changed in this round.
@msample, replies to your three points from 11-02.
EPOCH-009 and EPOCH-012: agreed. The epoch declared in the registry commit, and the rule that every link in a resolved chain declares the same epoch, replace the epoch in the index records and EPOCH-012's refusal of a mixed union. The withheld root-index fallback goes away with the per-commit index. Per Norrie, those edits wait until D3.1 is rewritten, so the spec changes once.
Epoch 1 gates signing: agreed, and it is outside this encoding spec. Round 5 adds a non-goal that points at gominimal/arch#157 and one sentence in Design reasoning saying the release-attestation scheme signs only at epoch 1 or later.
Carry forward instead of a cold rebuild: agreed on the direction, with two caveats.
The dependency digests must cover build dependencies, not only runtime ones. Today resolvedDependencies lists runtime dependencies only, so an artifact whose build dependency fell in an epoch-0 collision class would pass the check. Carry-forward should require complete build and runtime digests and rebuild anything else.
A verdict must not carry forward by its epoch-0 key, because in the collision classes one epoch-0 key names two specs. A verdict should move only through the spec its provenance names (repo, commit, package, arch), as the artifact does.
Once arch settles, decision 4 becomes "carry forward per D3.1".
…field
The Layout rule said the encoding emits every field, while EPOCH-021 has an
unset post-seal field add no bytes. The rule now covers the fields the seal
assigns, and names the one exception: a reserved-tag field added after the
seal is emitted only when set, after every sealed field, in tag order, and
says why injectivity still holds (minimal-foundry, round 5).

LOW · correctness · confidence 0.50 · in Layout
The layout frames every string and collection with a u32 length or count. EPOCH-001 claims injectivity for all canonical specs, but the Kani bound only covers 3 elements and 8 bytes. A string or list longer than u32::MAX would truncate if the encoder casts the length. Then two distinct specs could share an encoding. The spec does not say that the encoder must refuse such a value. Add a rule that the encoder returns an error when a length or count does not fit in u32, with a T0 test. Or state that the injectivity claim holds only below that limit.
What the reviewer checked
Layout: "Every string has a u32 little-endian length prefix. Every list, set or map has a u32 little-endian count prefix." No requirement covers a length above u32::MAX.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

Spec for gominimal/inbox#583, drafted with
spec-author0.3.0 — second full dogfood, and the first spec to climb the proof-tier ladder past T1.tier:lines: three at T2 with named Kani harnesses (bounded injectivity, round-trip, the nine epoch-0 collision-witness refutations), one carrying the T3proof:line as the stated Lean/Aeneas target (held by Kani until it lands, per the roadmap), three at T1, two at T0 scenarios (domain-separation/width, golden pins for both epochs).testsstay outside the canonical form with a write-guard (EPOCH-010); additive evolution is reserved-tag with an unknown tag a hard error (EPOCH-007, EPOCH-021). The two remaining open questions are the Lean theorem for EPOCH-001 (MEDIUM) and the measured harness bounds (LOW).Implementation tracker of record: minimal#1246 (encoding proposal, defect catalog, decision ledger, interaction inventory). Epic: inbox#583.
