How do we get humanitarian action right in a new era? 🌍 Humanitarian needs are growing, while the resources available to meet them are under increasing pressure. Democracy needs people who stand up for it. It needs international partnerships that strengthen democratic structures. Where people have a say in decision-making, where rights are protected and institutions are reliable, trust and prospects for a shared future are created – we know this from experience. And this is what we are working towards together with our partners in nearly 120 countries: we promote participation, strengthen dialogue between the state and society, and support local authorities in involving people more closely in decisions. We champion the principles of the rule of law and create rooms for dialogue, even where differing interests clash. This is how democracy takes shape in practice: when people know their rights and can exercise them, when their concerns are heard, and when they see that participation makes a difference. This is what we stand for, together with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Executive Board – Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven and Anna Sophie Herken – on World Democracy Day and every other day. Wo Menschen mitentscheiden können, wo Rechte geschützt und Institutionen verlässlich sind, entstehen Vertrauen und Perspektiven für eine gemeinsame Zukunft - das wissen wir aus Erfahrung. Und daran arbeiten wir gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern in rund 120 Ländern: Wir fördern Beteiligung, stärken den Dialog zwischen Staat und Gesellschaft und unterstützen Kommunen dabei, Menschen stärker in Entscheidungen einzubeziehen. Wir setzen uns für rechtsstaatliche Prinzipien ein und schaffen Räume für Austausch. Auch dort, wo unterschiedliche Interessen aufeinandertreffen. So wird Demokratie konkret: wenn Menschen ihre Rechte kennen und wahrnehmen können, wenn ihre Anliegen gehört werden und wenn sie erleben, dass Beteiligung etwas bewegt. Dafür stehen wir mit dem GIZ-Vorstandsteam Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven und Anna Sophie Herken – am Welttag der Demokratie und an jedem anderen Tag. 🤝 A milestone for women’s leadership in digital policy GIZ and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) signed a Joint Declaration at the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum #WTPF-26 in Nassau. Its objective is to strengthen cooperation on women’s leadership in digital policymaking and inclusive digital governance Why does this matter? 👉 Only around 1 in 5 ICT ministers and regulators is a woman 👉 Around 280 million fewer women than men are online globally Getting more women connected requires more women at the table - shaping the policies, priorities and digital futures that affect us all. The EU-LAC Network of Women Leaders in Digital Policy is already bringing together women policymakers and experts across Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean - we support the network on behalf of the European Union and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ). Now, through stronger cooperation with ITU and its Networks of Women, we have an opportunity to take this work even further. Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH hat dies direkt geteilt
GIZ eröffnet Landesbüro in Damaskus Gestern war es so weit: Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven hat unser neues GIZ-Landesbüro in Damaskus eröffnet. Unsere stellvertretende Vorstandssprecherin erklärte: „Wir sind sehr froh, dass wir wieder nach Damaskus zurückkehren und unsere Zusammenarbeit mit unseren syrischen Partnern verstärken können. Jetzt geht es darum, das Land gemeinsam wiederaufzubauen.“ Dabei arbeitet die GIZ eng mit der syrischen Zivilgesellschaft zusammen. Wiederaufbau beinhaltet mehr als Häuser und Straßen instand zu setzen. Hoven dazu: „Es geht um wirtschaftliche Perspektiven und Jobs für die Menschen, um funktionierende staatliche Institutionen und darum, dass langfristig Frieden entstehen kann. Wir stehen an der Seite Syriens, um dabei zu unterstützen, die notwendigen Reformen zum Wohle der syrischen Bevölkerung voranzubringen.“ 🤝 Auch während des Bürgerkriegs haben wir die Menschen nicht allein gelassen. Nachdem wir das Land vor 14 Jahren verlassen mussten, unterstützten wir die syrische Bevölkerung weiterhin aus den Nachbarländern heraus. So erhielten Millionen Menschen beispielsweise Zugang zu Gesundheitsversorgung und sauberem Wasser. Auf das über Jahre gewachsene Netzwerk mit der syrischen Zivilgesellschaft bauen wir nun auf. 🚑 To avoid another global health crisis and significant economic losses, it is essential to prevent pandemics before they even start. That’s why the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and the Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit (BMUKN) initiated the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade. GIZ hosted the Alliance since 2021 and now successfully handed it over to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). ☝ Every pandemic starts with local outbreaks. The Alliance supported over 20 projects worldwide to build capacities in local contexts and to enhance social and behaviour change for safer interactions between humans and wildlife. That reduces the risk of disease spillover. What a week! 💧 Stockholm #WorldWaterWeek just wrapped up. Key highlights include: ✅ #WomenInWater are forging empowering connections. At the Women Mingle by the Stronger Together! Coalition, talks focused on highlighting leadership journeys, and spotlighting female-driven innovation. Discussions also centred on supporting women professionals driving change in the water and sanitation sector. 👩🔬 ✅ Cities are taking the next step towards stronger utilities. The reception of the Urban Water Catalyst Initiative was an inspiring moment for ensuring utilities stay financially secure. 🪙 ✅ Actors across borders are finding new ways to work together.
