Unbearable and I doubt legal conditions on an SWR train

I am travelling on an SWR train heading to
Exeter St David’s from Clapham Junction in the most appalling conditions.

The journey will take 4 hours instead of the two hours and 45 minutes it should have taken when I booked the tickets last month.

SWR changed their schedule on August 10th…..

The train has just four carriages, it’s absolutely rammed and people are even having to stand in first class as all seats taken (just one avail when I got on at Clapham Junction) and there is nowhere to put any luggage so the aisles are blocked which I know is a H&S issue.

AND THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING ON THIS TRAIN just two tiny windows in the carriage.

There is no buffet car and not a single bottle of water to drink on the train

Surely SWR should have warned passengers of the appalling conditions on this train before we boarded as it really is unbearable and there is nowhere to get refreshments nor are we being offered water.

We should have been given the choice to await a later train than sweat to death as we are.

And how can these conditions possibly be legal - everyone in the carriage is so uncomfortable all literally dripping with sweat with nothing to drink on a packed train that is over 100 degrees in the four packed carriages?

Because it should not be legal - animals are not allowed to be transported in such conditions…

Not having water in this conditions and luggage in the aisles and even humans sitting in the aisles is a complete breach of H&S….

Check before you travel - the number of carriages of the train , if it has air con and if refreshments are available on board..

I will never use SWR for anything but short local journeys again

Disappointed with the biased reporting

Usually good.
But today (03.12.2025) I saw a report on theft in store. The only person they showed as a thief was foreigner. This gave an impression that foreigners are thieves. If you make a report about theft then it is a bigger problem than just one guy stealing. Then Why not show more incidents? Why just focus of one foreigner stealing? And to add he is „accused“ of stealing. You never mentioned that he actually stole. I didn’t like the biased reporting.

Extra cost for a slower train......

Booked a ticket for my 16 year old son to travel from Waterloo to Portsmouth. The ticket was for the 6pm fast train but I was advised that he would be allowed to travel on the 5pm fast train if he arrived early at Waterloo. He arrived early to find the 5pm train cancelled but was offered the option of the 5.30pm train which was a slower service but arrived at the same time into Portsmouth as the fast train at 6pm. He agreed but was told the cost was an extra £26. That's a stunning piece of customer care - cancel the train he was told he could get, charge him £26 to take a slower train, arrive at the same time as the 6pm train he already had a ticket for - whilst freeing up a seat on the 6pm train which SWR could then resell. He politely declined the earlier, slower, £26 "option" and sat in Waterloo station for over an hour to board the 6pm train he already had a ticket for.
SWR - your customer care is DIRE.
