  2. Video Editing Service

Written by the company

Descript is an AI-powered video and audio editing platform that combines transcription, screen recording, and publishing into a single tool. Instead of using multiple apps for editing, captioning, and sharing, users can manage the entire workflow in one place. At its foundation, Descript allows text-based editing. Media files are automatically transcribed, and changes to the text directly edit the video or audio timeline. This makes editing more accessible for beginners while still providing advanced capabilities for professionals. Core Features Text-based editing: Edit media by editing words on a transcript instead of navigating timelines. Screen and webcam recording: Capture product demos, tutorials, and presentations in one place. AI enhancements: Tools like Eye Contact, Studio Sound, filler word removal, and automatic captions. Avatars & voice tools: Create lifelike avatars, translate content, or generate synthetic voices. Collaboration tools: Multi-track editing and real-time team collaboration for distributed teams.

waste of money

This was a gigantic waste of money. The AI bot wastes the credits on edits that aren’t what I asked for. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money to get the video to edit the way I wanted it to. I cancelled my membership after one month and wish I could get my money back.

The premise is great the execution unacceptable

The premise is great the execution lacking to say the least. What would be a 5 minute process in normal editing software becomes a neverending nightmare. We had ok results with initial tests but as soon as we embarked on real requirements and a paid subscription for relatively simply new voice overs for existing videos the experience became terrible: completely messed up video sequences not in line with the voice over, added blanks for no reasons whatesoever. Every attempt to improve making it actually worse. We have asked for full refund but haven't heard back.

This is the worst thing that ever happened to me. I spend money for my presentation to be batched and different sentences have different AI actors accents and voices. This is the worst thing ever and I ve been through a lot.

I uploaded a 30 minute lecture…

I uploaded a 30 minute lecture recording to be cleaned up for Unnecessary spaces and UHs. I ended up paying a subscription of $24 and got a horrible result of a video recording in which many of the words important to the understanding of the lecture were removed in in the process of removing the spaces. I ended up spending more than 2 hours trying to fix the final video that was exported and fixed repeatedly and I still do not have a usable product. Meanwhile my $24 subscription expired and and the entire exercise was and a sheer waste of time and money. Extremely disappointing and frustrating experience. Do not go near desript. Do not pay them for anything.

This is supposed to be cutting edge but…

This is supposed to be cutting edge but it's actually a very poor UX. Just stick to something like iMovie. You will waste hours in their menus and navigation trying to do the simplest things in the world, like adding a background or even selecting which screen to record. It's a poorly made product that can't figure out what it wants to be.

The AI feature is shockingly poor

The AI feature is shockingly poor. £35 a month and it couldn't do the simplest of instructions, like add an object into the room, it just produced a basic slide show. It had all the potential of creating something amazing... it asked loads of questions about the theme of the video, like it was going to produce a master piece, but instead produced a video my 8 year old could of done with Siri on an iPad. £35 wasted signing up to this.... AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Constantly glitching

Honestly, I really wanted to love using this for my editing routine, but the constant glitches and forced AI tools have made it a total nightmare for my production schedule. The AI assistant burns through all your credits in minutes while messing up audio sync, and half the time the app crashes or loses saved edits entirely. Between the unhelpful support and constant app restarts, it completely ruins my peace of mind—definitely protect your budget and stay away.

Literally no point if you are a…

Literally no point if you are a learner, they take all your credits just by uploading so effectively you have to trim everything out of the app to then upload just to try and use the cool um removing tool, not worth it and can't speak to support unless you are a subscriber which you have no incentive to do, so stuck with an AI bot. Also if you do raise an email ticket the bot says it is only dealt with if you keep your account, doh!

Cancellation Antics - Bin them

I am not an idiot and canceled my account. They claim I paused it and they resumed charging me after a month. Three payments went through before I realised - perhaps I am an idiot. I didn't use the account at all in that time but they refused a refund - it's their "policy" - barring the last payment which I caught within 2 days.

I was using Descript for transcription. There are many better and more flexible services out there.

I used Descript for years for…

I used Descript for years for captioning but I very much dislike the fact how you up your prices. It's been done once already when I started paying practically a double for no particular reason. Now you force users to upgrade again because since the day before yesterday it's no longer possible to export files in 1080p unless you switch the plan for a considerably more expensive one. I pay 24$ per month for my subscription but since a few days ago I can only export files in 720p resolution. If I need 1080p or above I have to switch to the plan for 35$/month. And I only use descript for captions. Will be looking now for an alternative. Because that's too much.

I was charged for an annual renewal…

I was charged for an annual renewal even though I hadn't used Descript since 2023. As soon as I noticed the charge, I contacted support and provided all the information they requested, expecting my case to be reviewed fairly.

Instead, after asking for details and making me go through the process, they simply replied with a generic copy-and-paste message quoting their refund policy. There was no real consideration of the fact that my account had been inactive for years or any willingness to make a reasonable exception.

Good customer service isn't about hiding behind policies—it's about treating customers like people. This experience left me feeling that customer loyalty and fairness don't matter.

Very disappointing. I won't be using or recommending this service.

How is it the best AND the worst?!

I don’t understand how this software can be the best and yet the WORST software available. If all the features *actually* worked seamlessly, it would be awesome (and in many ways it is so I still use it *sigh*) But there are SO MANY glitches in the system that can be incredibly frustrating. I have to restart the app all the time in order to get basic functions to reset and work properly. Transitions aren’t always reliable, AI voice regen leaves so much to be desired (the amount of credits I have wasted on this alone), it will randomly reset and go super slow, and when recording into it I have to say a prayer every time that nothing goes sideways as I record. Again if it was smoother I’d give it 5 stars just bc the functions offered can’t be found elsewhere, but I find myself frustrated pretty much every time I edit video.

I used to love descript

I used to love descript. it gave me the ability to create videos with the look that I wanted. Then, they shifted to a nickle-and-dime tokenization approach about a year ago that stripped away individual control and empowered AI to make the changes for you. This will be ideal in about 10 years when AI is reliable. in the meantime, i feel like i am funding descript's AI R&D. I used to be able to do things on descript in a few clicks that i now need to rely on AI for. it's not that i want to use the descript AI, the software forces you into it. can someone please tell the descript braintrust that they were the up and coming talent that was headed for the hall of fame but then got sidetracked in a way that jeopardizes the company ever reaching its potential. there is still time to turn the ship around before it goes over the falls. to avoid disaster, descript should offer two paths: AI and DIY. charge more for DIY. just don't make me use that mediocre, error prone AI that is called underlord.
