How consumers are left at the mercy of big business: …
Today I will only review my experience with one particular product purchased at Aldi-SÜD:
'bio Erbseneintopf' 400 g can.
My critical focus lies on the sugar but especially the salt content of this savory soup dish.
One can (400 g) equals one portion and it contains already 53 % of the recommended daily intake of table salt (Referenzmenge für einen durchschnittlichen Erwachsenen) but it accounts for only 12 % of the 8,400 kJ daily reference quantity for an average adult!
To put it plainly, one would have to eat more than 8 cans per day to satisfy our human body's food energy need (the figure itself is IMHO by the European bureaucracy moderately assessed given increasing rates of obesity in the western world).
At the same time one would pass 4.30 times the recommended amount of table salt (or rather its threshold not to be exceeded as I understand)!
Here the dysfunction of the German traffic light system becomes obvious because these cans are labeled green - the color nearly every consumer misunderstands as ultimate health advice whereas it's nothing but a very valuable gift to the food industry by our government, here to one of Germany's richest families !
What a disgrace ! Sugar and salt only to boost their profits !
Two star rating because of the yummy taste and many far worse examples to be found …
