Useless service, poor systems!
Almost impossible to extend once your on the road.
They need you to have a relative in your departure country with access to your banking/ credit information and to be able to operate on your behalf.
If you try and communicate with them unless its an emergence it will take them at least 2 days to respond! This left me with no insurance for the last few days.

Very easy to put in a claim
We incurred medical costs in Japan. When we returned to NZ we put in a claim, which was very straightforward to do on line. Our claim was approved within 5 days and the money into our account the next. This experience will make us choose SCTI again the next time we travel.

The most affordable travel insurance
First of all they are the most affordable, and cover more than other insurance companies. Their online application is easy to use, and they are very quick to respond. I highly recommend, though I have not had cause to put in a claim for anything yet - but shall definitely use again.

Inaccurate health declarations resulting in higher premiums
Not enough opportunity to take into account specific health declarations both through online and over the ph applications. This resulted in paying an excessive premium for a low / no risk health diagnosis.

Very misleading cancellation cover
Very misleading cancellation cover
We purchased Southern Cross travel insurance specifically because their website advertises cover for airline cancellations.
Our airline cancelled our flight for an “operational reason”, leaving us with additional accommodation costs. Southern Cross is now relying on an exclusion buried on page 57 to potentially decline those costs.
Most concerningly, Southern Cross themselves have acknowledged that the situation is “grey” and “ambiguous” and that some operational cancellations are covered while others aren’t.
If you advertise cover for airline cancellations, customers should be able to clearly understand when an airline cancellation is actually covered — without discovering after the event that it depends on an unclear exclusion and the airline’s undisclosed operational reasoning.
We have lodged a formal complaint and will update this review with the outcome. In our experience, the cancellation cover being advertised does not match what a reasonable customer would expect when reading the website.

Claim Time
My recent claim with SCTI went very smoothly. I suffered a (bad) calf strain while in Australia, which required a Doctor's visit and a couple of scans. Upon returning home I made a claim to SCTI for the scans (the Doctor's visit was free). The claims process was slick, friendly and the claim was paid within a couple of days.

Southern Cross Travel insurance was competitive for an Island getaway. They were able to offer dive cover within the regular policy if diving with an acredited operator.
Fortunately didn't have to use it.
