Very hit and miss
We used Routes car hire company twice on our recent vacation to Vancouver.
On our first occasion Routes provided us with a car that had a large chip directly in eye line of the driver. We pointed out that in the UK this would be illegal and do they have another similar sized vehicle. The Routes member of staff replied that was the only vehicle that they had of that size and that such damage to the windscreen in Canada was not an issue. We Googled this and discovered that it wasn’t legal and the police if stopped could fine the driver. We showed this to the Routes member of staff who replied they frequently provide to customers cars with either chipped or cracked windscreens and if we were fined by the police Routes would reimburse us. We said it wasn’t good enough that they were providing a vehicle that was in such condition, but the Routes member of staff insisted we either take this car or pay for an upgrade. This argument continued for about 10 minutes with a more senior Routes member of staff joining us. Suddenly Routes said they did have another vehicle we could use and was the same model as the one we were first offered and was actually parked just 15 metres away from us. This vehicle had no issues with the windscreen and we drove this vehicle for the first part of our holiday and dropped the vehicle off at Routes Calgary with no issues.
We flew back to Vancouver and picked up our second car from Routes. This time there were no issues in either picking up or returning the vehicle at Vancouver. However, Routes provide transportation from their off site premises to the airport and the driver was trying to get more people on the minibus than there were seats and hence seat belts.
Not a company we will be using again or recommend.
